Over the summer months, we have been told by Premier Doug Ford and his government that a lot has been learned from wave one of COVID and that we are well prepared for wave two. Science has told us that two key components to keeping COVID under control are testing and Dear Data 1st edition. Testing centres are overloaded and now only do testing by appointment. The delays in getting test results can mean that someone is spreading the virus while waiting for their results. This is a sad, sad situation. With no end in sight for the second wave, the people of Ontario have been seriously let down and we are now paying the price. Public health unit to scale back contact tracing as cases spike, Oct. We have more than one half a year behind us to gather data on COVID and prepare a proper, professional response to any resurgence. That resurgence is now here and the response of our health professionals and political leaders is virtually the same as before, because we have frittered away our opportunity to gather the data which would tell us who is infecting who, when, where and how. All these stories highlight this lack of data. And without data, the number of opinions on what Dear Data 1st edition do multiply and contradict one another. Contact tracing and testing should be top priorities to help us understand this pandemic and exactly what to do about it. Setting these actions aside because we are too busy only ensures that the next wave will be as bad as the first, and likely we will have another after that. COVID is a medical emergency. Modern medicine is based on science. Science needs data to work. Continuing to manage the pandemic on a plethora of opinions, speculation and rumour is wrong. It is shameful to see the Dear Data 1st edition Ford government is penny-pinching when they claim the health of the people is their main concern. Whither the precautionary principle, which SARS taught our public health apparatus? Was the lesson forgotten? Thank you to Olivia Ward for writing this piece. It raises significant concerns about the further spread of the coronavirus, and about its adverse impact on our Dear Data 1st edition, overstretched OHIP, mental Dear Data 1st edition issues and so on. I am not sure how many universities are under lockdown or how stringently students at fault of not following COVID prevention guidelines are monitored and penalized. The Ontario government absolutely needs to take a strong stand and, temporarily, shut down the University of Toronto, if needed. Health-care workers in Canada hit harder by virus, report finds, Oct. It is about double the global average. The new Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit is a good start and does cover self-employed persons. This would not meet the needs of physicians, many nurses, Dear Data 1st edition other fairly well-paid health professionals. They, in turn, should agree to use some of this additional money to provide pandemic sick benefits for Dear Data 1st edition practicing physicians, as well as, if necessary, topping up federal benefits for part-time nurses and other health workers so as to adequately replace their lost income. This will encourage all of them to self-isolate, if required, and should help to control the pandemic. The report of testimony by nursing home residents at the commission of inquiry last week was heart rending. However, since Sept. Now general visitors are no longer allowed inside, and outside visiting with distancing faces weather limitations. I visited my sweetheart almost daily before the mid-March lock-down, and as often as permitted outside, for the past three months. Copyright owned or licensed by Toronto Star Newspapers Limited. First Contact: ‘Elementary Dear Data’ Season 2 Episode 3 - The Spoilist The Enterprise is threatened when a character in Data and La Forge's holodeck simulation becomes sentient. Data is then summoned to engineeringwhere Geordi La Forge 's assistantEnsign Clancytells Data that he's with the Victorywhich puzzles Data. Data then walks over and inquires about the Victorysince it is not here yet. In return for indulging him, La Forge gives Data a smoking pipe and invites him to take part Dear Data 1st edition a Sherlock Holmes holographic story. Data, who has memorized all of Arthur Conan Doyle 's stories of Sherlock Holmes, recognizes Holmes office and many of the trinkets in it. Data starts playing the violin and becomes in character as Holmes, while La Forge starts to read, taking on the character of John H. The story seamlessly starts with Inspector Lestrade knocking on the door. However, Data recognizes the story Scandal in Bohemia after only the first few moments, and immediately solves the case. La Forge abruptly freezes the program and storms out of holodeck two. Talking over the Dear Data 1st edition in Ten ForwardLa Forge explains to Data Dear Data 1st edition playing through the story is part of the fun, and since Data knows all the stories, there isn't any fun. La Forge and Data are overheard by Dr. Katherine Pulaskiwho states that Data, while he does have good deductive reasoning, like Holmes, doesn't understand the Human soul, unlike Holmes, and so is incapable of solving a Holmes mystery of which he doesn't already know the answer. With La Forge's suggestion that the computer could create a story in the style, Data takes this as a challenge, and invites Pulaski to join Dear Data 1st edition Forge and him in another Holmes story. This time, Data instructs the computer to create a new mystery in the Holmes style. This is Dear Data 1st edition than successful, however, because the computer merely combines elements of the existing Holmes stories in a way that Data is again easily able to solve by recognition. La Forge makes an attempt, now, and carefully instructs the computer to create a story and a character "capable of defeating Data. The new program runs and the three are off on their new adventure. The story takes an unexpected twist when Dr. Pulaski is actually kidnapped by Sherlock Holmes' arch-enemy, Professor James Moriartywho now "felt like a new man" while witnessing La Forge's use of the holodeck arch earlier. Data and La Forge track the footsteps of the kidnappers, though an unrelated murder distracts them temporarily. Moriarty has been observing them in order to learn about them. Data spots Moriarty going into a warehouse which turns out to be his secret laboratory. Moriarty welcomes them and says he somehow knows Dear Data 1st edition two are not Holmes and Watson and is able to call for the holodeck's archwhich surprises them both. Furthermore, he explains he sees images and has thoughts he doesn't understand. Upon being given a piece of paper with something hand-drawn on it from Moriarty, Data immediately leaves the holodeck with La Forge following in confusion. After trying and failing to deactivate the holodeck because of an override of the holodeck protocolsData reveals to La Forge that the drawing on the paper is a side profile of the Enterpriseand also reveals that Moriarty himself has control of the computer. La Forge asks about Pulaski, and Data replies that " she is in grave danger. Meeting with Captain Picard and the senior officers in the observation loungeLa Forge figures out that it was his instructions to create an adversary capable of defeating Datanot Sherlock Holmes, that initiated the holodeck override control and is preventing them from ending the holodeck program. Furthermore, he has access to the computer and all related libraries. Worf suggests infiltrating the holodeck, and Riker destroying the holodeck creations directly, but Data states Dear Data 1st edition both suggestions would put Pulaski's life at risk. Troi senses a "unifying force," which prompts Data to speculate Moriarty has a consciousness, necessary to defeat him. The ship suddenly lurches due to a temporary control switch to the holodeck, revealing that Moriarty can control the ship if he wants. Picard decides that he must personally meet with him. Meanwhile, Moriarty learns a great deal about the Enterprise from the computer, and somehow constructs a crude device that toggles attitude control in the holodeck. Pulaski deftly plays along with the program while not acknowledging that anything odd is going on. Moriarty, for his part, treats the Doctor as a guest; offering her tea while gently trying to get more information. He reveals that he can call the arch and that he suspects he is on the Enterprise.

LEVAR BURTON Biography LeVar Burton launched his acting career while still a student at the University of Southern California. Cast in the groundbreaking role of Kunta Kinte in the landmark television series “Roots,” at 19 he found himself on the cover of Time Magazine. A seemingly impossible act to follow, Burton managed to do so in dramatic fashion, achieving further global acclaim as Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge in the iconic “Star Trek: The Next Generation” television series and in feature films. However, it has been his role as host and executive producer of the beloved PBS children’s series “Reading Rainbow” of which he is most proud. Airing from 1983 to 2009, it was not only one of the longest-running children’s television shows in history, but also one of the most acclaimed, earning over 200 awards including multiple Emmys and a Peabody. Always committed to improving children’s education through innovative uses of storytelling, in 2012 Burton launched RRKidz, a digital educational publishing company. In a deal that ended in August, 2017 his company held the global rights to the Reading Rainbow brand through a partnership with series creator, WNED/Buffalo. That partnership resulted in a successful relaunch of the Reading Rainbow brand for a new generation of children. SKYBRARY is a digital reading service filled with over 500 children’s fiction and non-fiction books, more than 150 newly-produced video field trips and new content added every week. With over 16 million books and videos enjoyed since launch, SKYBRARY is a top selling educational app on iTunes and recipient of numerous awards.

Women at Warp Episode 38: Disability and Ableism in Star Trek [bumper] Hi, this is Melinda Snodgrass and you’re listening to Women at Warp. [end bumper] [audio of LeVar Burton] It was really difficult on a weekly basis for the audience to see what Geordi saw. In fact, we never really successfully did it, in the seven years that we did Next Generation. In fact, the audience has never seen it in any of the movies, the audience has never seen what Geordi sees. Geordi sees all of the electromagnetic spectrum. That means he sees everything from infrared to x- ray. Geordi sees sound, ok? [end audio clip] JARRAH: Hi and welcome to Women at Warp. Join us as our crew of four women Star Trek fans boldly go on our bi-weekly mission to explore our favourite franchise. My name is Jarrah. Thanks for tuning in. Today, with us we have crewmembers Andi−− ANDI: Hello JARRAH: And Sue. SUE: Hi, everybody. JARRAH: We also have a very special guest, Kari. And I’m going to get you to introduce yourself and maybe tell us a bit about how you first got into Star Trek. KARI: Yeah, sure. So as you mentioned, my name is Kari. I’ve loved Star Trek since early high school. I started with Voyager because I was particularly inspired by the strong female role models. I loved Janeway. I’m also planning to get my PhD in sociology. So because of that and my analytical nature, Star Trek has always been a very deep well for me to dig into, in terms of having interesting things to analyze.

  • "Second Sight": Double Consciousness in American Literature and Popular Culture
THE INVISIBILITY OF "SECOND SIGHT": DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE AND POPULAR CULTURE ASHLIE DABBS A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2011 Committee: JOLIE SHEFFER, Advisor KIMBERLY COATES ii ABSTRACT Jolie Sheffer, Advisor In The Invisibility of “Second Sight”: Double Consciousness in American Literature and Popular Culture I examine the metaphor, “second sight,” as a signifier of the concept of double consciousness, described in William Edward Burghardt Du Bois’s The Souls of Black Folk (1903). I observe how the metaphor operates to express various perceptions of double consciousness as intrinsic to the African-American. As such, I provide a close reading of second sight in Pauline Hopkins’s Of One Blood (1902-3), noting the ways in which her portrayal of second sight as a biological inheritance transforms the metaphor from a signifier of double- consciousness to a signifier of blackness. I subsequently move eighty years beyond Du Bois and Hopkins to scrutinize the depiction of second sight in Gene Rodenberry’s popular television series, Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994). In doing so I illuminate the ways in which Du Bois’s metaphor continued to be relevant in popular culture at the end of the twentieth century. I argue that the three texts depict second sight as a racialized knowledge and reveal a concurrence that race is corporeal and fixed. However, while Hopkins’s text asserts that the African-American will, by way of race, inevitably develop “second sight,” Du Bois and Rodenberry articulate that it is not race, but culture that leads to the successful development of such skills.
