How Europeans view and evaluate democracy / edited by Mónica Ferrín and Hanspeter Kriesi Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2016. 410 p. EN ISBN 9780198766902 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103410

Based on a new data-set covering 29 European and neighbouring countries, this volume shows how Europeans view and evaluate democracy: what are their conceptions of democracy, how do they assess the quality of democracy in their own country, and to what extent do they consider their country’s democracy as legitimate? The study shows that Europeans share a common view of liberal democracy, which is complemented by elements of social and direct democracy, which go beyond the basic liberal model. The level of their demands in terms of democracy varies, however, considerably across Europe and is related to their assessment of democracy: the worse the quality of democracy in a given country, the higher the respective demands on democracy. The analysis of the determinants of democratic views and evaluations shows that they depend on the political and economic (but less on the cultural) context conditions.

United by or against euroscepticism? : an assessment of public attitudes towards Europe in the context / edited by Alina Bârgăoanu, Loredana Radu and Diego Varela Newcastle upon Tyne : Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2015. 248 p. EN ISBN 9781443880909 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103391

This book sheds light on the future of the European Union in a critical context marked by what appears to be a 'never-ending' crisis of leadership and legitimacy. Will anti-European views and their corollary, such as -

populism, Euro-denial, and Euro-cynicisms along with all types of nationalisms, crush or further consolidate the European project? The volume offers detailed analyses of various dimensions of Euroscepticism in the context of the greatest economic crisis in the history of the EU.

L’Europe dans l’impasse / Yves Achille Paris : L'Harmattan, 2015. 181 p. Series : Questionner l'Europe FR ISBN 978-2-343-06073-6 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103178

This book explores the reactions to Europeanization and globalization in times of economic distress, including the transformation of European values in national legal cultures. The authors explore how European values, tradition and new legal challenges interconnect and dictate the paths of transition between old and new Europe.

Why Europe matters for Britain : the case for remaining in / John McCormick London : Palgrave, 2016. 178 p. EN ISBN 978-1-137-57682-8 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103387

As Britain prepares to go to the polls to settle its European future, this book makes an unequivocal case for Britain remaining in the European Union. It argues that in spite of the EU’s undoubted problems, Europe is a more prosperous, peaceful and secure place as a result of political and economic integration. Not only does the book set out the countless way so in which membership of the EU has improved British lives, but it also takes on the arguments of critics and sceptics. It shows these are too often based on myths and misunderstandings, and shows how a more accurate picture of the EU can enable us to appreciate its achievements and address its challenges. This is a book that turns the volume down on euroscepticism, and that will make essential reading for all those who want to understand better what is at stake as Britain prepares to vote on whether to remain in or leave the EU.

Media and politics in new democracies : Europe in a comparative perspective / edited by Jan Zielonka Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2015. 336 p. EN ISBN 9780198747536 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103117

Media and politics in new democracies focuses on new democracies in Central and Eastern Europe, but chapters analysing new democracies in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia are also included. These new democracies represent a variety of what sociologists call 'glocalism': homogenisation and heterogenisation coexist, revealing hybrid models and multiple modernities. It is local culture that assigns meaning to global and regional influences. 'Ideal' liberal models and best practices are being promoted and aspired to, but these models and practices are often being adopted in opaque ways generating results opposite to those intended. The book finds many new democracies to be fragile if not deficient, and tries to show what is really going on in these countries, how they compare to each other, and what they can learn from each other.

The European Union and the BRICS : complex relations in the era of global governance / Marek Rewizorski, editor Cham : Springer, 2015. 180 p. EN ISBN 9783319190983 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103245

This book explores the relations between the EU and the BRICS in the areas of politics, economic development, trade and security. The contributions cover topics such as the position of the EU and BRICS in the global order and the EU as a 'normative power', as well as the evolution, characteristics and institutionalization of BRICS and the roles of its

member countries Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa.

Security in shared neighbourhoods : foreign policy of Russia, Turkey and the EU / edited by Rémi Piet and Licínia Simão Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2016. 225 p. EN ISBN 9781137499097 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103439

This edited volume addresses the foreign policy approaches demonstrated by the European Union, Russia and Turkey towards their shared neighbourhood. These three geopolitical players play an essential role in the stability of the Black and Caspian Seas, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, determining the overall peace and prosperity in this common security complex. These regions are also characterized by fast-changing dynamics of political and social change within a sphere of geostrategic competition. By addressing issues of mutual perceptions, security provision and political and economic interaction, this volume provides a valuable analysis of pan-regional dynamics and a conceptualization of competition and cooperation. The foreign policies of post-Yugoslav states : from Yugoslavia to Europe / edited by Soeren Keil, Bernhard Stahl Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2014. 259 p. EN ISBN 9781137384126 Availability Central Library -- Main Collection -- 103195

The post-Yugoslav states have developed very differently since Yugoslavia dissolved in the early 1990s. This book analyzes the foreign policies of the post-Yugoslav states focusing on the main goals, actors, decision-making processes and influences on the foreign policies of these countries. It demonstrates how internal and external developments help to explain why their foreign policy, and with it EU integration, have proceeded so differently. Country experts point towards unique developments in these countries that have had a profound impact on their foreign policy. From Kosovo’s struggle for recognition to Macedonia’s name dispute with Greece, this volume discusses foreign policy from a unique insider perspective, thereby offering an original analysis of decision-making processes and foreign policy instruments in the post-Yugoslav states.
