  • Household of Prince George of Denmark 1680-1708 The
Household of Prince George of Denmark 1680-1708 The Household of Prince George of Denmark was established in 1683-84 upon his marriage to Lady Anne, daughter of James, Duke of York, whereupon she became the Princess of Denmark. The household was paid for by a grant of £20,000 pounds per annum supplied evenly by Charles II and the Duke of York. This was to be supplemented by the Prince of Denmark’s personal estates, estimated, optimistically, to yield £17,500. In 1689 the Crown contribution rose to £50,000 per annum.1 Danes were not to be appointed, though exceptions were made for a number of the Prince’s closest confidants, in particular Christian Siegfried von Plessen, who was nevertheless forced to exercise his duties from Denmark. 1. A THEN ITE A Library 'rhe Boston Letter from Athenteum No. 82 AUGUST Beacon Street Irregular Stnkes Agazn! Summer (zssue and readtng ltst) delayed tlus year, but does col'ne tn. ND what was summerlike about June of 198 5? Seriously, your editor apologi1cs for this inconvenient delay, but must plead preoccupation wtth pressing fam ily responsibilities. It is grattfying, however, to be told by Rodney Arm strong that quite a number of our readers have been clamonng (qutetly, of cou r ~e ) for the appearance of this issue. It's always pleasant to have one's small efforts ap preciated; and we trust that the extensive read1ng list offered here will be almost as useful in late summer as 1ts predecessors have proved in earber appearances. Before moving on to other topics, it seems appropriate to note that ITEMS 1s an irregular (not an annual, certainly not a quarterly) publication. Our original inten tion was to produce two or three issues tn most years; but our director's ANNUAL REPORT ts such a splendidly omnivorous devourer of MATERIA ATHENJEICA that we find ourself with a perennially impovenshed pen! But then, who could wtsh to lose a paragraph of that delightful Southern Baroque prose? At Home Readers will have observed the inevitably somewhat messy commencement of certain renovations on the first floor. The replacement, with insulated triple-layered glass, of the last of the 19 r 4 casements on the Granary stde of the budding should add considerably to fuel savings and security as well as wtnter warmth and summer coolness.

  • Addressing the Queen: Costumes and Elizabeth I in Film
ADDRESSING THE QUEEN: COSTUMES AND ELIZABETH I IN FILM by LISA WARD BOLDING Under the Direction of Frances Teague ABSTRACT This work focuses on how costumes convey meaning about Queen Elizabeth I in her biopics. First, I will examine the queen’s costume in the final scene of Shekhar Kapur’s 1998 film Elizabeth as a response to the heritage film debate. By conflating two famous portrait gowns, Kapur plays upon the audience’s visual expectations of historical film, thereby separating his film from those that had been criticized as “heritage films.” After using Elizabeth to complicate questions of genre, I will turn to Henry Koster’s 1955 film The Virgin Queen in order to examine how Elizabeth’s costumes depict her as a frustrated, passive figure juxtaposed against Sir Walter Raleigh, who actively fashions his identity by choosing his own clothing. INDEX WORDS: Queen Elizabeth I, Cate Blanchett, Bette Davis, Shekhar Kapur, Henry Koster, costumes, historical film, heritage film, national identity, British national identity, royal portraits, iconography ADDRESSING THE QUEEN: COSTUMES AND ELIZABETH I IN FILM by LISA WARD BOLDING B.A., Wofford College, 2001 A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The University of Georgia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS ATHENS, GEORGIA 2005 © 2005 Lisa Ward Bolding All Rights Reserved ADDRESSING THE QUEEN: COSTUMES AND ELIZABETH I IN FILM by LISA WARD BOLDING Major Professor: Frances Teague Committee: Christy Desmet Hugh Ruppersburg Electronic Version Approved: Maureen Grasso Dean of the Graduate School The University of Georgia December 2005 DEDICATION To Mom and Nana, for all your generous gifts; my love of stories comes from you.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM The Prince George's County Historical Society Vol. VIII, no. 1 January 1980 The New Year's Program There will be no meetings of the Prince George's County Historical Society in January or February. The 1980 meeting program will begin with the March meeting on the second Saturday of that month. Public Forum on Historic Preservation The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will sponsor a public forum on the future of historic preservation in Prince George's County on Thursday, January 10, at the Parks and Recreation Building, 6600 Kenilworth Avenue, in Riverdale. This forum, is the first step in the process of drafting a county Historic Sites and Districts Plan by the commission. (See next article). The purpose of the forum is to receive public testimony on historic preservation in Prince George's county. Among the questions to be addressed are these: How important should historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and revitalization be to Prince George's County? What should the objectives and priorities of a historic sites and districts plan be? What should be the relative roles of County government and private enterprise be in historic preservation and restoration? To what extent should the destruction of historic landmarks be regulated and their restoration or preservation subsidized? How should historic preservation relate to tourism, economic development, and revitalization? Where should the responsibility rest for making determinations about the relative merits of preserving and restoring individual sites? Members of the Historical Society, as well as others interested in historic preservation and its impact on county life, are invited to attend and, if they like, to testify.

KENSINGTON PALACE: HISTORY AND PERSONALITIES, PART I JULY 17, 2013 We are in the midst of a delicious high summer. Andy Murray has won the tennis and the strawberries and cream have been eaten and forgotten. Masterpiece London 2013 where Raffety Clocks successfully exhibited has now closed its doors until next season. Royal Ascot saw Her Majesty the Queen win the Gold Cup when her filly, Estimate won the race. It was the first time in the race’s 206 year history that a reigning Monarch had been honoured with such an exciting accolade and this being the 60th anniversary of the Coronation too. No wonder London is basking in glorious sunshine! To top all of these amazing events there is further excitement and anticipation a foot as in the next few days Britain, and indeed, the world, are looking forward to hearing good news from the two young, vibrant and glamorous of couples, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they are expecting their first arrival of a new baby and a future heir to the British Throne. Kensington Palace with Queen Victoria’s Statue in the Foreground This young couple are taking up residence at Kensington Palace; one of London’s most enchanting palaces and a place where several Monarchs and families of Monarchs have made their home. In the recent past it has been the London home of the late Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden, the Late Diana, Princess of Wales and the late Dowager Duchess of Gloucester, the Princess Alice. So Kensington Palace and the borough of Kensington has family members in its very enclaves and it has been like this since the time of the Glorious Revolution of 1688 which deposed James II and brought over from the Netherlands his daughter and son-in-law, King William III and his wife, Queen Mary II as joint rulers.
