THE SUMMER TERM has been a busy one for the VI department. We are a specialist centre which support students who are visually impaired or blind as part of the mainstream school. We had one student taking GCSE exams this year. Zaynab Rehman reads braille and requires extra time for exams and assessments because of the nature of reading braille means that it takes longer than reading print. For example; it’s not possible to scan text in braille so every word has to be read and diagrams are read tactually. As a result, some of Zaynab’s exams were 4 hours long! She managed extremely well and this is her usual way of working but her concentration and focus were commendable.
