  • Politics in Contemporary Productions of William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus1
2019. Aceito em: 29 out. 2019. 1 This work is part of my PhD thesis, defended in 2018 at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) under Dr. José Roberto O'Shea's supervision. Much of the research was conducted at the Shakespeare Institute (University of Birmingham), in Stratford-upon-Avon. I would like to thank CAPES, again, for funding my research both at the Institute and in Brazil. ÁVILA, Filipe dos Santos. Photo: Cesare de Giglio The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales. Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

  • June 2016 President: Vice President: Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace
No. 495 - June 2016 President: Vice President: Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace Nothing like a Dame (make that two!) The VW’s Shakespeare party this year marked Shakespeare’s 452nd birthday as well as the 400th anniversary of his death. The party was a great success and while London, Stratford and many major cultural institutions went, in my view, a bit over-bard (sorry!), the VW’s party was graced by the presence of two Dames - Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins, two star Shakespeare performers very much associated with the Old Vic. The party was held in the Old Vic rehearsal room where so many greats – from Ninette de Valois to Laurence Olivier – would have rehearsed. Our wonderful Vice-President, Nickolas Grace, introduced our star guests by talking about their associations with the Old Vic; he pointed out that we had two of the best St Joans ever in the room where they would have rehearsed: Eileen Atkins played St Joan for the Prospect Company at the Old Vic in 1977-8; Joan Plowright played the role for the National Theatre at the Old Vic in 1963. Nickolas also read out a letter from Ronald Pickup who had been invited to the party but was away in France. Ronald Pickup said that he often thought about how lucky he was to have six years at the National Theatre, then at Old Vic, at the beginning of his career (1966-72) and it had a huge impact on him. Dame Joan Plowright Dame Joan Plowright then regaled us with some of her memories of the Old Vic, starting with the story of how when she joined the Old Vic school in 1949 part of her ‘training’ was moving chairs in and out of the very room we were in.

  • Royal Shakespeare Company Returns to London's Roundhouse.Pdf
Royal Shakespeare Company returns to London’s Roundhouse from November 2010 with 10 week season • One company of 44 actors playing 228 roles • Six full-scale Shakespeare productions • Two Young People’s Shakespeares – innovative, distilled productions adapted for young people • Education projects across London and at the Roundhouse • One specially constructed 750-seat thrust stage auditorium – bringing audiences closer to the action – in one iconic venue Following its hugely successful, Olivier award-winning Histories Season in 2008, the RSC returns to London’s Roundhouse in November 2010 to present a ten-week repertoire of eight plays by Shakespeare – six full-scale productions and two specially adapted for children and families. This is the first chance London audiences will have to see the RSC’s current 44-strong ensemble, who have been working together in Stratford-upon-Avon since January 2009. The RSC Ensemble is generously supported by The Gatsby Charitable Foundation and The Kovner Foundation. The season opens with Rupert Goold’s production of Romeo and Juliet and runs in repertoire to 5 February next year, with Michael Boyd’s production of Antony and Cleopatra; The Winter’s Tale directed by David Farr; Julius Caesar directed by Lucy Bailey; As You Like It, directed by Michael Boyd; and David Farr’s King Lear (see end of release for production details at a glance). All six productions have been developed throughout their time in the repertoire and are revised and re-rehearsed with each revival in Stratford, Newcastle, London and finally for next year’s residency in New York. The season also includes the RSC’s two recent Young People’s Shakespeare (YPS) productions created especially for children and families, and inspired by the Stand Up For Shakespeare campaign which calls for more children and young people to See Shakespeare Live, Start Shakespeare Earlier and Do Shakespeare on their Feet – Hamlet, directed by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and The Comedy of Errors (in association with Told by an Idiot), directed by Paul Hunter.

  • Tansy Davies & Nick Drake Cave
Press release TANSY DAVIES & NICK DRAKE CAVE World premiere The Printworks, Canada Water, London, SE16 7PJ Wednesday 20 June to Saturday 23 June, 7.30pm Saturday 23 June, 2.30pm Tickets on sale 31 January 2018 londonsinfonietta.org.uk The London Sinfonietta, in association with The Royal Opera, presents a landmark new commission by one of the UK’s most exciting composers Tansy Davies and award-winning writer Nick Drake. A bold site-specific opera, Cave is about one man’s quest for survival and courage in a future ruined by climate change. Set in a cave and inspired by their significance across history, the vast space at Printworks provides the perfect venue for this world premiere production. The score, a tapestry of dark, luminous and visceral sounds, conjuring strange spaces full of imagined ancestral spirits, will be expertly performed by tenor Mark Padmore, mezzo- soprano Elaine Mitchener and the London Sinfonietta. Cave is directed by Lucy Bailey and conducted by Geoffrey Paterson. The London Sinfonietta approached Tansy Davies to commission this work as the finale to its 50th Anniversary Season, signifying the ensemble’s commitment to creating innovative, forward-looking new music projects that carry important messages about life in the 21st century. Cave reunites the successful partnership of Davies and Drake following Between Worlds, their operatic response to the events of 9/11 which won the 2016 British Composer Award for Stage Work. Like their first collaboration, Cave tells a story of human suffering balanced by the healing force of the natural world. The central character is a man fleeing from the devastating effects of climate change, who is also on a quest for his lost child.
