So, a warm welcome to you from Lea Stracey our tenth edition of Gai’s Gazette. With this edition Madison Whant we are officially in double digit territory. Emma Pearce After the success and sophistication of the Petrea Vela Championships at Randwick, you could be forgiven Nick Smith for thinking that Horse Racing would take a back Bob Charley seat until the awakening of the Spring Carnival, come September. I am pleased to report that due to personal recent experience, this is far from the truth. Almost the week after The Championships, I found Graphic design & layout myself on a plane with Gai and Rob heading for Port Fairy and the Warrnambool week of the Jumps Rac- Madison Whant ing Carnival in Victoria. Now if you haven’t been [email protected] to this area, it is a real treat. We stayed at Oscar’s in Port Fairy, very relaxing, and one of the many charming guest houses in the area. Whilst the chief photographer weather was at times very cold with a wind that must have come straight from Antarctica, the cosy fires and absolutely first class meals and coffee we had at The Stag and coffee shop Bella Claire Bradley Photographers were fabulous. The locals are most welcoming and you don’t need to go to Cornwall or Tetbury in England as the scenery is almost identical. The Jumps Race Days (there was flat racing too) were www.bradleyphotos.com.au another treat. Racegoers at the ‘Bool, as it is fondly referred to, are totally passionate and enthusi- astic about the Horse and the conversation everywhere is almost 100% about chances, trainers and Editorial Photographer the track. The Lady Trainer made her presence felt by winning the first race with Tenby Lady and later Valediction came a strong third. My favourite moment of the Carnival was when Gai, Zeb and Need for Steed Aus. I climbed an almost vertical hill in all our finery to join the masses to watch the steeple race, a five www.needforsteed.com.au and a half kilometre marathon, from the best vantage point on the course. Congratulations to the 2014 winner Chapparo and to our very own Bob Charley and his mates, owners of Chapparo, for a most spectacular show. If you’ve ever ridden The Pie with National Velvet you’ll know the thrill Advertisers I’m talking about. You will enjoy reading Bob’s comments on his experiences at the ‘Bool. All in all, Port Fairy, whilst having all the modern conveniences, is like a snapshot of Australian life Taylors Real Estate in the ‘50’s. You wouldn’t know, because Bradley Photographers every night we were there, every room in the pub was full. The menu is comprehensive but you Bluebloods go there for the local beef and lamb. Gai and I shared the slow cooked lamb Goffs every night (yes, it was THAT good) topped off with homemade vanilla ice cream and Belgian chocolate sauce (do I have your attention?). The added bonus of a very good coffee at Kerv’s Advertising Manager coffee shop in Scone, with a wonderful display of artwork by local artist Janno was fabulous too. On to two wonderful days of racing in glorious autumn sunshine. Gai excelled herself with yet Ric Chapman another Trifecta (see the front cover) of which we were all very proud. A superlative lunch in the [email protected] grand marquee was provided by Hunter Gourmet both days firstly hosted by Emirates Park and then by Inglis and Sons. Walking around the racecourse areas is very easy as the plan is a circular one. The Committee rooms are in a circular building surrounded at the back in a semi circle by PrINTERS the bookmakers who in turn are surrounded by a pre parade ring and the horse stables. In front of all this is the Racetrack. Love the design and love the welcoming feel of country racing here Graphic Impressions too. Scone shops shut down at this time of year and everyone is at the Races giving a real sense of community. I urge you to treat yourselves to the experiences of Warrnambool and Scone Racing. When Round Table Racing announced their arrival to the Turf late last year, they certainly hit the ground running, and Bruce, with the purchase of eighteen yearlings in January, hopes the results in next season’s two-year-old feature races will speak for themselves. With a selection of precocious yearlings now calling Tulloch Lodge home, under the watchful eye of one of Australia’s greatest two-year-old trainers, it is safe to

A High Chaparral gelding named Chaparro won the time honoured 5500m 33 fence Grand Annual Steeplechase this year, and Bob just happens to own a share in this horse. As a committed jumps racing supporter and founder of the Corrigan Club (www.corriganclub. com.au), Bob had always dreamt of winning Australia’s greatest steeplechase, as has any steeplechaser owner since the race’s inception in 1970. Bob has now won the race that has eluded him for so long, and the former Chairman of the AJC details the thrill of such a win exclusively for Gai’s Gazette. The below article is compulsory reading for anyone with even a passing interest in jumps racing or any form of for that matter. Bob is a former Chairman of the Australian Jockey Club and Australian Racing Board and is currently the Chairman of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame selection panel. As a passionate jumps racing supporter, he is very enthusiastic about Gai’s decision to train jump- ers. For more information on Bob Charley or on the Warrnambool jumping carnival please contact Zeb Armstrong at zebbond@hotmail. com. Jumps racing is a great and very affordable way to be involved in the racing industry. A daunting task you would imagine for Johnny Weatherby, 53, who in 2011 became only the seventh person to hold the post since it was created in 1901. “I wouldn’t say daunting,” Johnny says. “Because over and above everything else, The Queen is a horsewoman whose knowledge of racing and the thoroughbred breeding industry is second to none – my biggest fear is being caught out because she is so well-informed! “What makes it such a pleasure is that she is so enthusiastic and always happy to discuss racing, which is, after all, what we are all about. “Recently, The Queen was pleased to hear that we have been able to make signif- icant prize money increases and at this time of year we talk about the horses that will be running at Royal Ascot, which countries they are coming from and such like. And she will also tell me which of her horses may be running. It was marvelous last year when The Queen won with Estimate – her twenty first Royal Ascot winner.” Although Johnny will be overseeing just his second Royal Meeting as Her Majes- ty’s Representative, he is a familiar face at Ascot. The Mystery of Devon Loch’s ‘Belly-flop’

To coincide with some our jumps racing articles, it seemed the perfect time to have a quick look at one of the greatest mysteries in the history of jumps racing worldwide… why did Devon Loch sit down in the home straight in the 1956 Grand National at Aintree, Liverpool England?

The Official Ambassador for the Warrnambool Racing Club this year was Bob Charley AO. Bob has spent a great portion of his life involved in the racing industry and we are very lucky at Gai’s Gazette to have Bob share with us his experiences of the 2014 Warrnambool Carnival. Below are the books nominated for the award with a short summary and review of their content. This year the award of $3000 prize money was shared between John Adams for Over the Hur- dle’s and Jessica Owers for Shannon.

BOOK REVIEWS – Whittaker Prize 2014 written by Graham Caves

The Modern Melbourne Cup... by Danny Power That the Melbourne cup has undergone a transformation since the first interna- tionally trained winner Vintage Crop, is uncontestable. Danny Power tells us all about it happening and how and why. His journalistic approach tells it plainly and impassionately and whether you believe that the transformation is good or bad for this iconic Australian horse race, you will understand what has happened much better for reading this book.

Over the Hurdles... by John Adams When a man with the knowledge of jumps racing and racing history that John Adams has decides to write a book, you know it will be a first class cover of the subject. This book is handsomely produced, full of rare and seldom-seen pho- tographs and presented in easy to read style. It covers the history of all jumps racing in Australia, not just hurdles, and would have benefitted from an index. Quality writing and in-depth research makes it a valuable contribution to the seldom written about subject.

The Horse that Bart Built... by Helen Thomas A veteran of authoring books on Australian horse racing, Helen Thomas seems to be writing from the heart with this one. She tells the story of So You Think, Australia’s best horse beyond the sprint distances for many years. His develop- ment by Bart, his dominance at home, his shock sale and subsequent overseas achievements under faltering management are all sympathetically covered in this excellent account of a handsome champion of the turf.

36 www.gaiwaterhouse.com.au Black Caviar... by Gerard Whateley Obviously a book on Black Caviar would be forthcoming sooner rather than later but commercial competitiveness flushed out three versions in 2013 before the great mare finished her career and this aspect didn’t please many. All versions had merit for different reasons but the best written for detail and insight was Whateley’s tome. He establishes the mare’s greatness while encompassing the whole whirling world around her and the difficult decisions needed to protect her invincibility and her well-being. (a new edition of this work covering her full career and with profuse illustrations is now available)

Harry... by Noel Harris with Wally O’Hearn Noel Harris seems to have been around forever. In his late fifties he still rides in New Zealand and has put his life story into this book with the help of experi- enced racing writer Wally O’Hearn. As a successful rider at home, in Singapore and Australia his career has few equals for a jockey from New Zealand. He has won all of the best races in his own country and a Cox Plate in Australia and had special affinity with the racehorses Castletown and (Our) Poetic Prince. This biography is honestly told and to read of the background to many of his greatest successes and his disappointments, is intriguing reading.

Drongo... by Bruce Walkley When an author takes an Australian colloquialism and proceeds to explain why the subject of that saying has been badly done by with the march of time, it makes very interesting reading. Walkley has researched his subject vigorously and proves to all that Drongo was far from a drongo. He just didn’t win a race! The illustrations in this book are fresh and seldom seen, they give a real aura to the publication.

Shannon... by Jessica Owers The second book from Whittaker Prize winner of 2012, Jessica Owers, exceeds the essence of her first book, Peter Pan. Owers is the definitive researcher. She finds hidden and forgotten stories on her subjects like few can, and seeks to convey the lives of the people and horses in her books in contemporary settings. That she chooses to do so in a narrative fashion is not to the taste of all but her success speaks for itself. This is a fascinating and informative book that must be read.

They Hit the Line... by Bryan Martin and Leo Schlink We were told this book was coming, under a couple of different titles a year or two ago but it didn’t arrive. It has arrived now and is a very worthwhile contribu- tion to modern racing literature. Co-opting the help of Leo Schlink, popular and personable former race caller and commentator of forty years, Bryan Martin, has given us a quick, easy to read resume of the star performers of his time from the best of vantage points, his broadcast boxes. His heart is on his sleeve in the sto- ries he tells and that will make the book warmly received by the Australian racing public.

Winning bidders of the Australian Rotary Health Hat Day Silent Auction recently attended ‘Sunday at The Stables’...

Dear Gai , Just a quick note to say thanks for a wonderful day and for the hospitality shown to us on Sunday 11/05/14 at Tulloch Lodge. We attended the “Sunday at the Stables with Gai” after placing a winning bid at the Australian Rotary Health Hat Day silent auction held at Hawkesbury Races last year. We didn’t know what to expect from the day, but came away having a great day, knowing we made the right decision to bid for the day at the auction and wanting to do the day again . We were made very welcome from the time we arrived and felt included in the day’s events, by both you and your staff, Cheryl Montgomery, Mark Bensley, Peter and other guests and owners. Especially Linda Rub with Gai Natasha and Bruce, who are a great couple and an asset to you. Once again , many thanks for showing us the enjoyment to be had at your stables day and we hope to be able to be part of it again . Thanks,

Cheryl Montgomery, Mark Bensley, Peter and Linda Rub

Dear Gai , It is with the greatest pleasure I write this note to thank you for presenting our mare Driefon- tein in such magnificent winning order. Words cannot explain how excited we were to win a GROUP 1 in Adelaide and I know, and have always known , that the key to Driefontein has always been you. Your gift as a brilliant train- er shines. You might say that Driefontein is a professional race horse but it takes special skills of yours to win Group 1’s. You have been giving Ingrid and I the most exciting times of our lives. We follow her everywhere and love going to the races. Mind you it ’s costing me heaps keeping Ingrid in new hats and dresses! (I don’t know why you girls won’t wear things twice). Anyway Gai , one thing is for sure - we will never have any horse trained by anyone else but you. Thanks again . Dave and Ingrid Murphy
