Media Release For Immediate Release Singapore Art Museum Presents the Fifth Southeast Asian Film Festival Celebrating the diversity of Southeast Asia through independent cinema Singapore, 16 March 2015 - The fifth edition of the Southeast Asian Film Festival (SEAFF) presented by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) returns from 10 April to 3 May 2015 with an exciting line-up of the newest and most compelling cinematic work from the region. Celebrating the spirit of independent filmmaking in Southeast Asia and reflecting the region’s diversity, the Festival features films from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Taking a co-curated approach, SAM once again collaborates with independent film curators Philip Cheah and Teo Swee Leng for this edition’s film selection, presenting a total of 20 films. The films Chasing Waves (2015) and Fundamentally Happy (2015) make their world premieres at this Festival, while K’na the Dreamweaver (2014) and Riddles of My Homecoming (2013) and Sparks (2014) are international premieres showing outside their home countries for the first time. Opening and Closing Films SEAFF opens with the film The Last Executioner (2014), directed by Tom Waller, which tells the story of Chavoret Jarubon - the last person in Thailand whose job was to execute death row prisoners with a machine gun. The film stars Vithaya Pansringarm in the role of Chavoret, for which he won Best Actor at the Shanghai Film Festival in 2014. He is also internationally known for his role in the 2013 crime drama Only God Forgives alongside Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Scott Thomas. The closing film, NOVA (2014) by Malaysian director Nik Amir Mustapha, is a tale about the madcap adventure of a group of friends on a quest to prove that UFOs are real. -

CHAPTER FOUR BETWEEN FORGETTING AND THE REPETITIONS OF MEMORY: FEI MU’S AESTHETICS OF DESOLATION IN SPRING IN A SMALL TOWN Heroism has strength but no beauty and thus seems to lack humanity. Tragedy, however, resembles the matching of bright red with deep green: an intense and unequivocal contrast. And yet it is more exciting than truly revelatory. The reason desolation resonates far more profoundly is that it resembles the conjunction of scallion green with peach red, creating an equivocal contrast. I like writing by way of equivocal contrast because it is relatively true to life.1 Like wartime cartoonists, poets, dramatists, and other artists who traveled inland to promote the cause of resistance, the Chinese film industry was also displaced to the Nationalist interior during the War of Resistance. The Nationalist government-owned Central Film Studio (Zhongyang diangy- ing sheyingchang 中央电影摄影场) and China Motion Pictures Studio (Zhongguo dianying zhipianchang 中国电影制片厂) were relocated to Chongqing, where the government encouraged the production of docu- mentary and feature films to promote the war effort. However, political instability, inflation, supply problems, and inadequate means of distribu- tion made it difficult to create high-quality films, and both Central Film and China Motion Pictures were forced to suspend filmmaking activities between 1941 and 1943.2 Although film studios in “Orphan Island” (gudao 孤岛) Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Manchuria operated throughout most of the war, working under the watchful eye of Japanese censors, filmmakers in the occupied regions were unable to produce films that explored in depth the experiences of ordinary people in wartime. 1 Eileen Chang, “Writing of One’s Own,” p. -

SINGAPORE, 29 JANUARY 2018 – Launching on 1 February 2018, On the Cusp: Early Contemporary Art Activities in Singapore (1976 – 1996), Documentation from the Koh Nguang How Archive Collection, is an archival presentation curated by and seen from the perspective of Singaporean artist and archivist Koh Nguang How. The exhibition pivots around Koh’s involvement, activities, collection and recollection as Curatorial Assistant at the National Museum Art Gallery (NMAG) from October 1985 to February 1992, a position that launched his interest and commitment in documenting and archiving art activities in Singapore. Koh’s extensive archival collection is widely acknowledged as the most comprehensive on Singapore early contemporary to contemporary art. Using material which Koh personally documented or collected, the presentation explores early contemporary art activities through two lenses. The first gathers events, people and activities in a chronological order that, in Koh’s view, were leaning towards the ‘contemporary’ in the 20-year period between the establishment of NMAG and SAM. The second offers a closer look at the events in, around and connected to NMAG and the former St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) building. Navigating around these two trajectories produces both expansive and specific insights - from the groundswell within the Singaporean art scene as it transitioned from the modern to the contemporary, eventually contributing towards the establishment of Singapore’s first dedicated visual arts museum; to the relationships between artists, curators, organisers, collectives and communities in and around NMAG and the SAM-SJI building. -

Music motifs in Six Dynasties texts Eleanor Laura Lipsey Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD 2018 Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures China & Inner Asia Section SOAS, University of London 1 Abstract This is a study of the music culture of the Six Dynasties era (220–589 CE), as represented in certain texts of the period, to uncover clues to the music culture that can be found in textual references to music. This study diverges from most scholarship on Six Dynasties music culture in four major ways. The first concerns the type of text examined: since the standard histories have been extensively researched, I work with other types of literature. The second is the casual and indirect nature of the references to music that I analyze: particularly when the focus of research is on ideas, most scholarship is directed at formal essays that explicitly address questions about the nature of music. -

Representative Director and President CEO Tamotsu Adachi The 12th the Benesse Prize Awarded to Singapore Biennale 2019 Artist Amanda Heng The 12th Benesse Prize was awarded to Ms. Amanda Heng of Singapore by Benesse Holdings, Inc. (“Benesse”: Headquartered in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan; Representative Director and President, CEO: Tamotsu Adachi) and the Singapore Art Museum (SAM). The award ceremony was held at the National Gallery Singapore on January 11th, 2020. The 12th Benesse Prize was presented in collaboration with SAM, the organizer of Singapore Biennale 2019 and was open to all artists participating in the Biennale. The following five shortlisted artists were selected by an international jury and announced at the SB2019 media conference in November 2019: Amanda Heng (Singapore), Dusadee Huntrakul (Thailand), Haifa Subay (Yemen), Hera Büyüktaşçıyan (Turkey), and Robert Zhao Renhui (Singapore). The final selection took place at Benesse Art Site Naoshima, where the winner was selected from the shortlist. The prize is awarded to an outstanding artist chosen from the artists participating in the Biennale. The prize recognizes an artist whose work embodies an experimental and critical spirit, beyond conventional practice, and who demonstrates the potential of developing an artistic reflection around the theme of “Benesse” (Well-Being). Ms. Heng will be commissioned to either create a work to be exhibited at Benesse Art Site Naoshima, Japan, or have her artwork become part of its collection in the future, in addition to receiving a cash prize of JPY 3,000,000 (including a visit to Benesse Art Site Naoshima) from Benesse.
