I wanted to touch on the story of Chicago and the role the river has played in its history, from its layout to its culture, and I also loved the way the blue of the sky reflected in the glass of the skyscrapers, which then reflected in the water. I used a wide angle lens to capture the sense of scale and focused on the midground, with a wide depth of field, to ensure the picture was sharp throughout. The shot was tricky, because being low in the water with the buildings so high ran the risk of parallax, an effect where objects appear to veer together. To counteract this, I tried not to shoot up, instead keeping my camera level with the horizon. HIGHLIFE RECORDS ~ BEST OF 2018 Excellent cross-border travel, without the bag searches. Melissa Laveaux Radyo Siwel Canada Canadian born, of Haitian descent, singer-guitarist Melissa Laveaux has fashioned one of the year's most seductive and original offerings. With strong hints of Lhasa's compelling vocal delivery, and with an overall sound arrangement that is both familiar and exotic, this album has spent more time on the Highlife sound-system than any other this year. Intriguing cover art as well. Peggy Lee Echo Painting East Van In my books, the best first and second track one-two punch of the year. The whole thing is stunningly rich and beautiful. As Vancouver's improv music scene seasons into form, here are some of the delicious fruits of its labours by many of its prominent participants. A big band presenting a richly varied tapestry, unfolding as though through history and fully in the here and now. Prince Piano & A Microphone, 1983 USA Recorded between his 5th album “1999” and his breakthrough 6th “Purple Rain”, this intimate set brings the listener into a studio, where it is just us, Prince, and a piano, as advertized. Throughout the songs chosen here, we are – again and again – brought face to face with both Prince’s legendary funky use of space and time and his mercurial lyrical creativity. Orquesta Akokan Orquesta Akokan Cuba Listening to this new LP by Orquesta Akokan, one can't help but feel the spirits of Cuba's musical giants rising from the speakers. The arrangements carry the exquisite beauty, pathos and playfulness of the renowned dance orchestras of the 1940s and 50s who had recorded in the same Areito studios in Centro Havana.

DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

  • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.
