DIRECTIONS (see also http://www.sussex.ac.uk/aboutus/findus)

Talks will be held in room C175 (Global Studies Resource Centre) on the ground floor of the Arts C building (building 17 on the attached map, enter by the door marked by a purple ‘C’).

Arriving by rail. Falmer train station is directly opposite the University campus. Pedestrian access is through a subway under the A27 – follow signs for the University of Sussex (the University of has a campus at Falmer too). Falmer is on the line between Brighton and Lewes, about 8 minutes' travel time in each direction; at least 4 trains an hour call there during the day. Visitors travelling via London and the west should take a train to Brighton and change there for Falmer. If you are coming from the east, change at Lewes for Falmer.

Arriving by car. The University is at Falmer on the A27 between Brighton and Lewes, about four miles from the centre of Brighton. (Please follow signs for University of Sussex, located on the north side of the A27; the University of Brighton also has a campus at Falmer on the south side of the A27.) Visitors from London and the north should take the M23/A23 road towards Brighton. Before entering the centre of Brighton, join the A27 eastbound (signposted to Lewes). Drivers from the east or west take the A27 direct to the University.

Sat Nav: use BN1 9RE to navigate to car park P7 (closest to the talks venue).

LUNCH

Lunch (hot and cold choices) can be bought from the campus outlet Eat Central on the ground floor of Bramber House (cash and card payments).

FRIDAY EVENING

For those people arriving on Friday evening, we suggest meeting in the nearby town of Lewes at the John Harvey Tavern (http://www.johnharveytavern.co.uk/). Located in the centre of the town (bottom of the hill, next to the river bridge on Cliffe High Street and directly opposite Harvey’s Brewery), there is a range of good food served until 9.30 pm and (unsurprisingly) some rather decent Harvey’s beer. Lewes can easily be accessed by train – there are usually at least 4 trains an hour from Falmer station (located at the south end of campus) – £3.40 return. The pub is an easy 10-minute walk from Lewes station. We will probably start assembling there from 7.30-ish. If fish & chips is more your thing, then there’s a great chippy 3 minutes’ walk away from the pub…

ACCOMMODATION ON CAMPUS

For those staying on campus on Friday evening, you will be in the accommodation wing of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) on the west side of the campus (building 19 on the map). The closest car park is P7 (free after 5pm weekdays and all weekend). Please give Mick a call on arrival, either on the mobile (above) or internal extension 3237.

Room 3: Alan Lord Room 4: Ian Boomer Room 5: Matt Wakefield Room 6: David Horne Room 8: Ginny Benardout Room 9: Michaela Radl Room 10: Tasnim Patel

Arrival before 5pm: check-in at IDS reception for your keycard. If parking, buy a £2 permit (much cheaper than the pay-and-display).

Arrival after 5pm: Access the key safe situated 25 yards to the right of the main IDS entrance (marked North Door residential). Don’t worry that it looks a bit like a fire escape (it is).

Unlock the key safe by turning the dials to 0080.

The keycard will open the North Door (simply show the card to the electronic reader just above the door handle). The keycard also opens your residential door.

Please feel free to use the study course suite, where you will find kitchen facilities and the TV lounge. Breakfast will also be provided in this area on Saturday morning.

Eat Central (ground floor, Bramber House) will be open from 8am on Saturday for those requiring industrial-strength shots of caffeine…

Any difficulties, please phone Mick (07754-426535) or IDS (07979-708820).

Payment: cost for B&B is £36 plus VAT per person, total £43.20. The account with IDS has already been settled, so please pay Mick either by cheque (payable to ‘University of Sussex’) or cash.  ) y a
