Because lies vary so greatly in their motivations and consequences (among many other qualities), philosophers have long sought to catalog them to help make sense of their diversity and complexity. This was particularly perplexing to many outside (and within) evangelical circles, because as leaders of America’s “Moral Majority” for almost four decades, prior to Trump’s campaign, evangelicals had insisted that only candidates who set a high standard for personal integrity and civic decency, were qualified to serve as president. -

Introduction “Sexual violence is more than just a crime against individuals,” declared President Barack Obama in January 2014. “It threatens our families; it threatens our communities. Ultimately, it threatens the entire country. It tears apart the fabric of our communities . [W]e have the power to do something about it as a government, as a nation.”1 This was, by all accounts, the first time an American pres- ident had ever used the phrase “sexual violence,” let alone made dealing with it a national priority.2 That recognition of the problem was long overdue. The Unit- ed States has the world’s second highest rate of reported rape.3 About sixteen to eighteen percent of American women and one to three percent of American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape.4 Only about a third of rapes and attempted rapes * Ernest W. THE CENTERPIECE A bi-weekly publication of the Center for State Policy & Leadership University of Illinois Springfield January 24, 2013 WUIS has become a full partner in Harvest Public Media, a multi-state reporting effort funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Today’s emerging agenda for agriculture is headlined by energy and climate change, food safety, biofuels, animal production, water quality, and local foods. By examining these issues from local, regional, and national perspectives, Harvest plans to offer a rich multimedia resource on “food, fuel, and field.” WUIS will report the Illinois angle on subjects at the intersection of agriculture and the consumer. The lead station in the network is KCUR in Kansas City. Other full partners include Iowa Public Radio, Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, and stations in Columbia, Missouri and Greeley, Colorado. The network recently broadcast a series of stories examining the beef industry. Jonathan Moore, whose case was handled by the Center’s Illinois Innocence Project, was one of 22 exonerations for wrongful conviction in the United States in 2012, according to a report released recently by the National Innocence Network. Moore was serving out a 76-year prison sentence for murder and attempted murder when, in 2011, a witness came forward with new information demonstrating Moore’s lack of involvement in the crime. The Illinois Innocence Project, together with the Kane County State’s Attorney and the Aurora Police, reinvestigated the case, and all concluded that Moore could not have committed the murder. The Kane County State’s Attorney presented a motion to vacate the conviction on March 6, 2012, and Moore was exonerated. -
Comparing NEO Search Telescopes
Comparing NEO Search Telescopes Nathan Myhrvold Jan 19th, 2016 Abstract Multiple terrestrial and space-based telescopes have been proposed for detecting and tracking near-Earth objects (NEOs). Detailed simulations of the search performance of these systems have used complex computer codes that are not widely available, which hinders accurate cross- comparison of the proposals and obscures whether they have consistent assumptions. Moreover, some proposed instruments would survey infrared (IR) bands, whereas others would operate in the visible band, and differences among asteroid thermal and visible light models used in the simulations further complicate like-to-like comparisons. I use simple physical principles to estimate basic performance metrics for the ground-based Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and three space- based instruments—Sentinel, NEOCam, and a Cubesat constellation. The performance is measured against two different NEO distributions, the Bottke et al. distribution of general NEOs, and the Veres et al. distribution of Earth impacting NEO. The results of the comparison show simplified relative performance metrics, including the expected number of NEOs visible in the search volumes and the initial detection rates expected for each system. Although these simplified comparisons do not capture all of the details, they give considerable insight into the physical factors limiting performance. Multiple asteroid thermal models are considered, including FRM, NEATM, and a new generalized form of FRM (GFRM). I describe issues with how IR albedo and emissivity have been estimated in previous studies, which may render them inaccurate. A thermal model for tumbling asteroids is also developed and suggests that tumbling asteroids may be surprisingly difficult for IR telescopes to observe.
