encoreartsseattle.com 11 A WORLD IN TRANSITION By KWAPI VENGESAYI, Community Engagement Specialist

Everyone enjoys a good love story told well and on this alone, Waterfall delivers. But beyond its captivating story of forbidden love, Waterfall possesses a socially conscious essence as it moves from Bangkok to Tokyo in the 1930s, exploring issues of culture and identity, race, globalization, immigration and the eternal tug of war between tradition and modernity. These themes not only capture the tensions of the times, but seem quite familiar and relevant to the present.

This political backdrop should come as no suprise to those familiar with Thai novelist Siburapha’s body of work. Based on his best-selling book Behind the Painting, this musical tells a beautiful love story while staying true to what Siburapha was known for: his dedication to social justice and his ability to write captivating love stories while embedding sometimes dangerous messages that spoke to inequality, politics, and cultural identity.

During the 1920s and ’30s, American culture and influence began to penetrate the Asian world. From manufactured goods to music, dance, and film, American products and the American lifestyle spread across formerly closed borders at an impressive pace. In some places Western culture was well received—especially by the young. In others it was resented and resisted. We find both of these extremes in Waterfall as we to get to know Noppon, the love-struck Thai student who proclaims, “I’m American!” and the Japanese Foreign Minister, Takamoto, who finds American manners to be “atrocious” and “their ethics even worse.”

In fairness to Minister Takamoto, there is a sad history that informs us as to why he and his nation have such negative sentiments towards the United States. Leading up to the 1930s, Western powers had treated immigrants from Japan in a way that was hostile and discriminatory. In I905 California passed anti-Japanese legislation and a year later, San Francisco’s school board ordered Japanese and Asian children to attend segregated schools. In 1919, Western nations rejected Japan’s request to include a racial equality clause in the League of Nations covenant and in 1924, the United States passed a law severely limiting Japanese immigration. This series of events brings us to the Japan we find in Waterfall, nationalistic and

The collaboration of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire is one of the longest-running “acts” in show business, outlasting the partnerships of Gilbert & Sullivan, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe and—well, just about any other team you could name. That fact speaks to the deep artistic affinity between the two men, who began writing theater scores at Yale in the late 1950s and now, more than a half century later, are unveiling their latest creation, Waterfall.

As undergraduates, they wrote two musicals, Cyrano and Grand Tour. They met up again in , where their musical The Sap of Life was produced off-Broadway in 1961. Several shows followed. Then Shire found work as a rehearsal pianist for Funny Girl, and eventually became RICHARD MALTBY, JR. Barbra Streisand’s regular accompanist and occasional arranger. Over the next decade, Streisand would record five Maltby/Shire songs, including “Autumn” (their first collaboration at Yale) and “Starting Here, Starting Now,” Maltby remained on the east coast to pursue a life in the featured on her 1964 television special and companion theater as a writer/director, and for a while their careers album Color Me Barbra. diverged as each found success in new ventures. Then in 1976 Maltby was asked to stage a revue of songs from the In 1970, Shire moved to California to write film scores, Maltby/Shire catalogue. Shire came back from Hollywood eventually composing music for over 42 features and 90 to provide the arrangements, and the show, Starting Here, television programs. In 1980, “It Goes Like It Goes,” his Starting Now, was a great success. A second Maltby/Shire theme song from Norma Rae (lyrics by Norman Gimbel), revue, Closer than Ever, would appear in 1989. It enjoyed won the Oscar for Best Song. a healthy run, and won Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score.

Two other Maltby-directed revues have won ® for Best Musical: Ain’t Misbehavin’, inspired by Fats Waller’s life and music (for which Maltby won the Tony Award for Best Director), and Fosse, a dance tribute to the great choreographer.

In 1983, Broadway welcomed a new Maltby/Shire musical, Baby, which explored how lives are changed by parenthood.

Maltby had his most impressive success to date with Miss Saigon, for which he wrote the evocative lyrics. It opened on Broadway in 1991 and ran for nearly a decade. The last Maltby/Shire collaboration to reach Broadway was Big (1996). DAVID SHIRE If the theater gods smile, Waterfall will be the team’s next and perhaps most adventurous production.

14 5TH AVENUE MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY (Why Do) SCENES:WATERFALL BEHIND THE MUSICALS MATTER(?) TAK VIRAVAN ON HIS LOVE OF MUSICAL THEATER By BRIDGET MORGAN, Public Relations & Communications Manager

Musical theater is one of our great indigenous art forms, born entirely of an American culture of entertainment and exported around the world. It has the power to tell incredible stories, touch the soul and bring light to joy. It is this gift that Waterfall co-director Tak Viravan loves, and the reason that he believes the creation of new musicals is of the utmost importance.

You might call Viravan the Simon Cowell of Thailand. A media mogul with years of experience discovering and molding pop stars and a number of hit TV shows under his belt including The Star—an equivalent of American Idol—on which he discovered Thai superstar Bie Sukrit, he has his finger on the pulse of Thai culture. And Viravan is one of the key players in bringing musical theater to his country’s cultural epicenter.

“When I was twelve, my father took me to see a production of The Sound of Music in San Francisco, and I fell in love with it,” says Viravan, recounting how his love for musical theater was born. “I thought it was magical, visually and musically. I started seeing other musicals in years to come. I found out that musicals were not only magical in what I saw and heard, but also in what I felt. I learned a lot about life through musicals—their messages, how they reflected society and life.” TAK VIRAVAN Musicals have the power to transcend cultural barriers, which is why they have been adopted by so many other countries to tell their own stories. Viravan knew that there would be a home for his beloved art form in Thailand, and helped introduce it to his country. But Viravan says, “With the Thai ways of life and how Thai audiences enjoy entertainment, Thai musicals are more focused on love, and they tend to be more emotional.”

It was for this reason that he brought the beloved Thai novel Behind the Painting to rich musical life in Thailand starring his protégé Bie Sukrit. That musical has now become Waterfall, adapted for a Broadway audience by a team of musical pros. “Turning the show into a Broadway musical was not only my idea, but also Richard Maltby’s and Jack Dalgleish’s. Richard fell in love with the sincerity of the piece and the love story. There hasn’t been this kind of musical on Broadway for a while. And yet, audiences are longing for this kind of show. And with the exotic set up of culture clash—the East and the West— there is an opportunity here to have a luscious, sincere, romantic love story.”

What he hopes audiences will remember of this special new musical? “Beauty. Romance. Cultures. Being who you are, and learning to balance your roots with an ever-changing world.”

24 5TH AVENUE MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY YOUR MUSICAL NON-PROFIT THEATRE COMPANY HOW TO SUCCEED IN SHOW BIZ ERIC ANKRIM WITHOUT REALLY TRYING AT A GLANCE By BRIDGET MORGAN, Public Relations and Communications Manager FIRST SHOW: How to Succeed…, “I’m just in love with the city of Seattle and the artists that create here,” says Curtis High School, 1997 Eric Ankrim, star of The 5th’s upcoming production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. And it’s no wonder. The talented theater artist is one of the FIRST PROFESSIONAL SHOW: most in-demand professionals in the area. At The 5th, audiences love Ankrim not Northwest Bookshelf, only for his incredible stage presence (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, 5th Avenue’s Adventure First Date), but for his talent in the director’s chair (Grease, ELF – The Musical). Musical Theater, 2002

Taking center stage as J. Pierrepont Finch is coming full circle for Ankrim. “This FIRST SHOW AT THE 5TH: show is actually the first show I ever auditioned for and performed in, back in my The Rocky Horror Show, 2003 sophomore year of high school. In many ways that experience was the reason I pursued theater moving forward.” FAVORITE 5TH AVE ROLE: Curly in Oklahoma!, 2012 That high school production hooked Ankrim for the same reason that theater continues to be a passion in his life: relationships. “The collaborative spirit of theater- HIGHLIGHT OF making creates my favorite kind of friendship and bond. By ORLANDO MORALES, Director of Rising Star Project and Internships

Last season, the Rising Star Project welcomed nearly one hundred students into The 5th Avenue Theatre to mount a full-scale production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. The theater also partnered with educators to bring nearly 2,000 students from over 20 local schools to see the production created by their peers. None of this would be possible without the dedication and support of our partner teachers. They make amazing things happen for students every day. This is a snapshot of one of them.
