Holiday scams Even the holiday's are a target for cyber criminals who prey on our pocketbooks during this festive season. The Better Business Bu- reau has issued a release about scam artists posing as FedEx, UPS, and Wal-Mart employees to trick consumers at Christmastime. The BBB issued this warning after a new string of phishing emails have popped up this holiday. Here is how it works; hackers and scammers are pretending to be customer service personnel from the above-mentioned companies that are known to do a lot of business this time of year. These predators try to earn your trust by posing in this manner to gain access to computer drives, files and accounts to steal personal information such as your Social Securi- ty number, and bank and credit card numbers. Ken Vander Meeden, CEO of the BBB serving Western Mich- igan said the cyber criminals are spreading viruses and stealing identities and information by using these email phishing messages to con customers to take advantage of online shopping and ship- ping of merchandise all across the country. Here are three of the e-mails that the BBB has spotted. The first is an email that pretends to be from the shipping company claim- ing that there is a problem with the delivery of your merchandise. Commonly, the email will include a hyperlink for recipients to click that will take them to another web site that might install mal- ware or solicit personal information. A message currently going around has a subject line that looks like "Subject: Tracking Number 13040065504." The body of the email claims that a pack- age couldn't be delivered and advises you "to take your package back you should print the copy of the invoice that is in the added file." Obviously, the attachment is actually a virus that will infect the computer if opened. The BBB advises consumers to go directly to the shipper's web site instead of clicking the link in the email. You can also contact the company over the phone to confirm if there are any problems. Do not open attachments to unsolicited emails. Another scam revolves around surveys that offer holiday spend- Gone am ing cash. This scam preys on cash-strapped shoppers using an email that pretends to be from Wal-Mart. BOYNE Crrv RAMBLERS/ BOYNE FALLS LOGGERS EAST JORDAN RED DEVILS EJ rolls out 2-0 ellaire, 60-16

BY CHRIS TREDWAY Stand 1-1 after loss SPORTS EDITOR EAST JORDAN — The final outcome was determined early in the game Saturday after- noon as the Red Devils smothered Leland with airtight defense and a blanket of offensive points, cooling the Comets in the first quarter by a score of 23-6. The bloodletting was slowed in the second quarter, where the East Jordan boys matched Leland's effort with 11 points to leave the score 34-17 at halftime. The Red Devils put up 11 points in the third quarter as well, while Leland dropped in 10 be- fore being left in the fourth period by a home team that closed like a runaway freight train. Time ran out on four quarters with the score at 63-34, giving East Jordan their first win of the season at home and second overall after winning their opener on the road. Crediting a blockade style of defense with the win at home, East Jordan coach Darrin Weber also had senior Michael Hines to thank for a ca- reer-high 31 points after shooting 13-for-17 from the floor. Hines captured five steals on the night, while teammates Teddy Snowden and Josh Williams dished out six assists each. Marshall Page led the team in rebounds with eight in a game where East Jordan outrebourided their guests 28-20 overall. "I think (Hines) was feeling it and I ran sev- eral plays his way," Weber said. "He played outstanding on both ends of the floor...great all-around team win as everyone contributed." In the season opener Tuesday, Dec. 9, East Jordan got a slow start against Mancelona and led the Ironmen by a slim three points after the first quarter after trailing early. "We came out a little slow, and flat," Weber said. "We were only 6-for-21 shooting inside the paint." After the rust was shaken loose, the Red Dev- ils distanced themselves from Mancelona to lead 28-14 at halftime, 48-25 going into the fourth quarter and ended the night with a 70-31 Photos by Vic Ruggles • blowout victory.
