It is also a time that we learn about the fast-changing world alongside our GLF family. Over the past few years, our team has been curating each GLF with a very specific intent. We want each of you to open up your mind and your heart at the end of every conference and we want you to take the knowledge you gain at GLF and share it with your teams at work, as well as with your families at home. Four years ago, we spoke about leadership as choice making. Three years ago, we said that, when we as senior leaders, make the right choices, we create a beautiful symphony. Two years ago, we decided to create a more equal music, with our focus on women, and it has been interesting to see how this commitment to gender diversity has distilled across our group since then. Last year, we stated that “other worlds are possible”, and GLF 2018 showcased a variety of future imaginations. The theme for GLF 2019 is “What Matters”. Let us dig deeper and focus on the essentials. Love, health and the environment are 3 areas that I care about personally. Through the conference, we will also shine a spotlight on languages, histories, geographies and concerns that we believe matter now more than ever. As always, our formats will vary. There will be talks, music performances, screenings and some fun activities through which you all can showcase your creativity. Of course, there are prizes to be won. (We know how competitive you all are!) I am grateful that so many extraordinary superstars – from the world of business, science, literature and the performing arts – have agreed to come to GLF 2019 to share their stories with you. It is a testimonial to the affection and respect they have for our Godrej group. As I re-read their amazing profiles, I cannot wait to listen to each of them and also to hang out with them post their talks. (In the past, some of my most memorable GLF conversations have happened on the conference sidelines, over the yummy food at the GLF café and I know how much you all like the GLF food too!) I always say this to you all during each conference and I want to end this note by saying this once again. Our team puts their hearts and souls into organizing GLF each year to inspire you, certainly, but more importantly, to move you to act differently. This GLF too is a call to action. What matters is that we co-create both, a more meaningful Godrej, and also a much better world for future generations. - Parmesh Shahani DAY 1 MAY 8 JESSICA MBANGENI is one of South Africa’s most sought-after female iimbongi (praise singers) and has made her mark in a male-dominated cultural terrain. In Volume 19, Number 2, 1999 her introduction to Musicology and Difference (1993), Ruth Solie made the point that classification systems in music involve, imply, and reinforce social URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1014444ar hierarchies. What Solie had to say about the Western classification system DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1014444ar applies equally well to India. This study supports the assumption, which I believe will hold true for other geographic regions, that there are universal implications to the term "classical," implications that include, but reach far See table of contents beyond, the musical. Specific to the Indian situation, however, are the particular historic dynamics involved in the subsidiary category known as "light-classical" music. Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.
