Tonight is designed to bring peo- ple together for a wonderful time and to create additional funds that benefit all the Marin Day Schools campuses. The SILENT AUCTION tables are filled with wonderful items and bargains galore! The value of the auction items range from $10 to the “sky’s the limit.” They are really priced to sell and to offer you a wonderful prize and a super deal. This is the perfect time and place to buy presents for so many special occasions…the traditional May and June holidays…Graduation, Wedding, Anniversary, Shower and Baby gifts. Our prizes really are special, unique and priced to give you a great deal. Read about the many wonderful items and prize packages in this program. Bid sheets are posted close to the prizes. Please write your bid number, your first and last name, your telephone number and your bid. Starting bids and mini- mum raises may not be changed or altered. Much time and thought goes into pricing the prizes to be fair and also offer tremendous bargains. The Silent Auction will close in stages starting at 9:00 PM and completely close down by 9:40 PM. The last bid on the sheet will be the winner of the prize and that person is responsible for purchasing the item. RAFFLE TICKETS We will draw the lucky raffle winners at approximately 10:00 PM. The wonderful red wines we are serving are Baileyana 2001 Syrah and Judd & Sons 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon. The white wines are from Grove Street Winery and Rutz Cellars. We thank John Nivens, Michelle Banks and Keith Rutz. We also thank Gary Burns of Tarantino’s Restaurant and Tim McDonald of The Spinnaker Restaurant for their continuing assistance in arranging the very generous donations from many of the exceptional wineries and vineyards. All beverages must be purchased with tickets. This year we have devised a fun game of chance for additional prizes. There are gift cer- tificates to Nordstrom, Borders, Gap, restaurants galore, family fun activities, movies, stores, services, MDS logo items and other unique surprises. Take a chance, $20 gets you 2 spins and you may go home with something wonderful. Bid early, bid often and bid high! It goes to a very good cause. Quality childcare and early childhood education does make a difference. - 2 - HOW TO PAY AND PICK UP PRIZES Prepaid Option: This year guests will have the opportunity to prepay for all auction items and purchases. Go to the PREPAID DESK anytime up until 9:30 p.m., leave an imprint of your credit card and you will not have to wait on line at the end of the evening. If you have prepaid, then you go directly to the auction sections, pick up your prizes and go home. This will save lots of time at the end of the evening. IF YOU ARE NOT PREPAID 1. “Check out” procedures require EVERYONE who has not prepaid, to go to the alphabetized cashier line of the first letter of your last name near the entrance to the event, where you originally checked into the party. 2. The cashiers will have your name, which corresponds to your bid number and a list of all the prizes that you have won or purchased. 3. After you pay for your prizes you need to return to the Silent Auction Areas with your bid sheets marked “PAID” and pick up your items. 4. Families with more than one last name will use the line that corresponds to the last name of their MDS/EDS student. 5. All purchases may be paid for with cash, check, MasterCard or Visa. Throughout the program, we will try and list all the generous people and businesses that made this event possible. Without their time, effort, energy, ideas and donations, this fundraiser would not be possible. We really hope you will support their restau- rants, hotels, stores, companies and services. Please let them know that you saw their names at our Fund Raiser. And please, thank them for their support. Marin Day Schools wants you to know that in addition to being a “Fund” raiser (which is very important and benefits every MDS/EDS child); we want this night to be a “Fun” rais- er too! In our hectic lives we sometimes lose touch with friends, mainly because we don’t have the time to nurture relationships. Tonight is the perfect opportunity to connect with the terrific teachers, make new friends, and renew long time associations. HAVE A GREAT EVENING! - 3 - INFORMATION AND RULES OF THE AUCTION All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds are possible. This evening is a fund raiser. We hope that all purchasers will understand that once a purchase is made, refunds will not be given. Thank you for your participation. It is much appreciated. All articles are sold “as is” and Marin Day Schools is not responsible for the correct description or authenticity of any item, value, price or prize. We do our best to confirm the prize, but it is not always possible. In some instances, the items may be somewhat differ- ent than depicted in this program. The “value” reflects the fair market value as furnished by the contributors or our best esti- mate. MDS has not verified the values that have been provided by the donors. Terms and conditions may vary and are determined by the donor. Many items have spe- cific conditions such as time limits and availability. The buyer is responsible for contacting the donor regarding all items and services. Marin Day Schools has made every effort to include specific restrictions or instructions in the program, but is not responsible if discrepancies exist. We respectfully request and appreciate that donors and winners honor the terms and conditions of the prize. In the SILENT AUCTION, the last bidder on the Silent Auction Bid Sheet will be acknowl- edged as the winner and is responsible for purchasing the item. Your signature and/or bid number on the Silent Auction Bid Sheet constitutes a legal contract to buy. Minimum bids must be honored. Starting bids and minimum raises must be observed. Starting Bids will not be reduced tonight. Group purchases are fine but we request that only one person makes the payment to the school and that it be organized in the name of that individual. All items may be paid for with cash, MasterCard, Visa or personal check with current ID. We would appreciate it, if winners would take home their purchases this evening. Purchases are tax deductible within the full extent of the law. Please consult your attorney or accountant for the most current tax information. - 4 - UNIQUE AT MDS U1. MEET GAVIN NEWSOM! Los Angeles Times: Elmo's tickled red Page 1 of 5 http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-elmo22oct22,1,784212,full.story?coll=la-headlines- business&ctrack=1&cset=true Elmo's tickled red The latest animatronic version of the "Sesame Street" character shows signs of becoming this year's hottest holiday toy. By Abigail Goldman Times Staff Writer October 22, 2006 Bright red as ever, Tickle Me Elmo is back on retailers' shelves this holiday season, moving like never before. This year, he bowls over in a fit of giggles, kicks his feet and turns himself over to pound an arm on the floor as he guffaws. That done, he stands back up again. Elmo is also being peddled like never before. Mattel Inc. kept the doll's tricks under tight wraps until its unveiling in September. Most retailers placed their orders without having seen the doll itself. And Elmo is selling like crazy. Parents are clearing out retailers' stocks — in many cases in one day — creating an early holiday sensation and the first real must-have toy since the late 1990s. "We had thousands of people prepay to reserve an Elmo that really was sight unseen," said Ernie Speranza, the chief marketing officer of KB Toys, a chain based in Pittsfield, Mass. "It was the best one-day product launch [we've] seen in 30 years." Now, thanks in part to the laughing red creature, industry analysts predict the hottest season in five years for the $22-billion U.S. toy business. Some are already calling it the "Elmo Effect." "The customers are calling the stores every day to find out if they got any in stock," said Scott McCall, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s chief toy merchant.

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Communications THE BRAND AND THE BOLD: CARTOON NETWORK’S BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD AS COMICS-LICENSED CHILDREN’S TELEVISION A Thesis in Media Studies by Zachary Roman © 2011 Zachary Roman Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts May 2011 The thesis of Zachary Roman was reviewed and approved* by the following: Matthew P. McAllister Professor of Communications Thesis Advisor Barbara Bird Associate Professor of Communications Jeanne Lynn Hall Associate Professor of Communications Marie Hardin Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ii ABSTRACT This thesis critiques the animated children's television program, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, debuting in 2008 on Cartoon Network, as a synergistic corporate commodity. In the program, Batman teams up with a guest hero who helps him vanquish the villain. The commodity and commercial functions of this premise is to introduce and promote secondary licensed brands -- the “guest heroes” and “guest villains” -- for synergistic profit based on the current popularity with the program’s anchor brand, Batman. Given Time Warner's ownership of multiple media outlets including Warner Bros. Animation, DC Comics and Cartoon Network, the program serves as a bridge text to usher young consumers of Time Warner content into becoming long-term consumers of more adult iterations of many of these same characters and licenses. The thesis contextualizes the program in the larger scholarly literature of the nature of media licensing, the history of commercialism on children's television, comic books and children's media licensing.
