UYour Boxing Day jumps Festivals offer what must be a wonderful respite from all that Christmas joy, but racing over the jumps is very much a minor-league affair over here. American steeplechasing has been on a long slide to total irrelevancy for at least half a century, and there is no reason to think that is ever likely to improve. While Britain, Ireland and France boast a thriving population of stallions and mares specifically for National Hunt racing, there are no commercial stallions dedicated to producing jumpers in North America. Most important American steeplechases these days are won by imports, and the few American-breds that make headlines, such as they are, are horses intended for Flat-racing who simply were not good enough to make the grade under our mind- numbingly monotonous conditions.
