Europe XXL 14 March – 12 July 2009

We imagined Europe XXL in terms of a journey of discovery through a new continent, a voyage through a Europe transfigured 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

To enjoy four months of adventure across Central and Eastern Europe, we will start in vibrant Berlin and finish in Kazakhstan, 5 time zones away. The cities we pass through will be so many stations along the way providing unforgettable sights and experiences: the white nights of the Baltic States, the psychedelic sounds of Istanbul, a Polish Mleczny Bar, muscovite streetwear, an electronic thermal bath from Budapest…

Thanks to major exhibitions, supercharged Midi-Midi thematic weekends, radical shows and new venues where we can pause and appreciate the joys of life, Lille and the Eurometropolitan area are ready to adopt the tempo of the new East, taking us far beyond our everyday existence.

We provide the passports: bon voyage through the invisible borders!

Second floor: still further East, theatre meets art.

What is the East today? The curator Elena Sorokina, in collaboration with the Kazakh artist Erbossyn Meldibekov, evokes with Scènes Centrales the friction between Europe and Asia, traditions and socialist realism, re-examined through surprisingly theatrical artistic projects.

Artistic advisor: Erbossyn Meldibekov (Kazakhstan) EAST TO EAST artists: Danica Dakic, Sejla Kameric, Erbossyn Meldibekov, Milica Tomic, Igor Grubic, Djamshed Kholikov, Sophia Tabatadze, Stealth.unlimited (Ana Dzokic and Marc Neelen), Abilsait Atabekov, Gulnara Kasmalieva/Muratbek Djoumaliev, David Maljkovic, Marjetica Potrc, Igor Eskinja, Christoph Weber, Alexander Ugay, Elena Kovylina, Chto Delat Group (Olga Egorova Tsaplya), Dmitry Vilensky, Natalia Pershina (Gliuklya), Nikolai Oleinikov

And at the end of the journey, two installations immerse us in an atmosphere bordering on the sacred. Anatoly Osmolovsky, one of the standout figures of the muscovite art scene, imagines a deviant church, where the icons are slices of bread. The Pole Katarzyna Kozyra proposes a very free representation of the famous Budapest baths. In two videos (awarded prizes at the Venice Biennial) she does not hesitate to mix genders, offering a fascinating vision of the baths for men and women and overturning the usual representations of the body… An almost mystical vision.

The visitor discovers Istanbul’s multiple facets, the interstices of a city dedicated to the interweaving of genres, where frustrated identities, resistances to the moral order, extreme tensions, humour tinged with a sense of the absurd, poetry and fragility all cohabitate. International artists, whether Turkish or from the diaspora speak to us about this matrix-city, in a constant state of flux.

All of the countries of the Balkans have experienced a kind of condensed version of Europe in the last century. The Balkans encompass cities as lively and as different as Belgrade, Zagreb, Sarajevo and Ljubljana. This Midi-midi weekend will attempt to show as much as possible of this variety: including Balkan orchestras, truculent films, strong cooking, writers with unlimited imagination, multiple cultures and religions… So let us celebrate Europe XXl with Balkan-style ballrooms and banquets throughout the entire metropolitan area. Come with your picnic basket, lille3000 will provide the recipes, the picnic cloths and the wooden floors to dance on, as well as the DJs and Balkan musicians.

Musical director: Pascal Verrot. Directed by Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser / Picardy Orchestra / Choir of Angers-Nantes Opera

Somewhere between the comic book and the paintings of James Ensor, the tandem of directors Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser takes great pleasure in making this Mahagonny into a performance which is at the same time entertaining and somewhat caustic. Their vision of the work scrupulously respects the taboo- breaking nature of this criticism of the absolute power of money in a society where “the greatest crime one can commit is not to have any”.

In the footsteps of Milan Kundera, a Czech, Ismail Kadaré, and an Albanian, Ivo Andric, a Bosnian-Serb, a whole new literary scene is emerging in France and winning prizes: Orhan Pamuk, a Turk, Nobel Prize in 2006, Norman Manea, a Romanian, Prix Médicis for best foreign novel in 2006. Marked by wars or the fall of the Wall, or else forced to publish from abroad as in the case of Nedim Gürsel or Elif Shafak, both Turkish writers, a new original literature is being produced, largely dream-like in style or engaging with current events.

Europe XXL will emphasise the vivacity of this literature in the form of multiple special events, including two highlights during the Midi-Midi Warsaw weekend (3 jours du Livre, 21-22-23 May 2009) and the Midi-Midi Istanbul weekend (Brunch Littéraire, 4 July 2009 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille). THE tri postal

This industrial building converted into a venue for exhibitions and clubbing is the symbol of the lille3000 energy. It hosts contemporary artistic work, presents exhibitions devoted to the new liquid frontiers of Europe and morphs into a futuristic disco for special events.

Since 2004, the 6000 m2 of this venue initially dedicated to sorting the post have constituted a vital space in the cultural dynamism of Lille. The Tri Postal has notably hosted the exhibitions Robots! (2004), Bombay Maximum City (2006) as well as Passage of Time - The François Pinault Foundation Collection (2007).

THE MAISONS FOLIE

In 2009, they celebrated their fifth anniversary. Created from the energy of lille2004 European Capital of Culture, these new showcase venues are the symbol of a renewed art of producing and circulating cultural creation. A million miles from sacred temples, they give rise to the blending of artistic disciplines, bringing together artists and local people in the districts where the maisons Folies have been set up.

Places to live, work and be convivial, they host produc- tions, exhibitions, artists’ workshops; they invite everyone to open up to innovative artistic practices. They are now references for the local inhabitants but also for visitors from all over the world who wish to discover a way of life enjoyed in these contemporary spaces.
