From Marconi’s wireless telegraph to satellite delivery, the wireless news has been indispensible to voyagers of many sorts, especially on transoceanic routes. Steamship lines saw money to be made in providing this amenity. The technologies of commu- nications and of the printing of newspapers at sea paced each other. Many of these seagoing “newspapers” themselves tell nautical tales and social stories about their readers. But they also illumine their producers in Europe, North America, and Asia, including the shipping lines, the shoreside press, and the radiomen at sea. The radio technology evolved from long waves to satellites, and from spark sets to vacuum tube gear and then to modern solid-state circuits. A demand for current information at sea, far from its sources, created an important maritime revenue stream. The economics of news at sea and the higher socio-economic class of the passengers helped to further the development of the radio art.     Bell Embossed in the land Auckland University of Technology Zana Bell Embossed in the land: auto/biography of place Abstract: The land sings its history but to hear it, you have to listen. And, like a cypher, it needs decoding. The voices and footsteps of the past are embossed in the landforms; submerged and subsumed, yet never entirely eradicated. Deep in the soils of the past, the seeds of the future are already unfurling. Using psychogeographic motifs, this presentation is an experiment in constructing a biography of place – and through that, an autobiography of people for, as John Steinbeck asked, ‘How will we know it’s us without our past?’ The exploration begins with a mossy bench beneath a tree in a New Zealand bay where the pulse of other times beats strong. This bench serves as a tardis and, using images of the surrounding landforms and manmade features, the journey traverses time in rapid fast-forward, from the instigating stratovolcano through to the present via tales of the creatures and peoples who successively inhabited the land. This telescoping of time reveals how history continually folds back on itself in waves of creation, invasion and extinction. Yet the focus is not only on the past for echoes of the vanished presage what is to come and provide glimpses of futures. And through this excavation of place, the topography of self is revealed. Biographical note: Zana Bell has had six novels published internationally across a range of genres. Her short stories and articles have also been published widely and her creative work has won awards and grants.

    VMM Archives collection [multiple media] / Vancouver Maritime Museum COLLECTION NUMBER VMM02 DATE(S) 1828-2017; predominately 1898-1960 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 2 m of textual records and graphic material, 16 audio cassette tapes ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY / BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH The Vancouver Maritime Museum joined the Archives Association of British Columbia (AABC) in 2003. In 2004 the Archives was officially named after Leonard G. McCann, Curator Emeritus of the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Mr. McCann joined the Museum in the early 1960s and worked tirelessly until his retirement in 1992. He passed away in 2015. The archival collection has since grown to include several fonds from marine historians and ship’s captains, ships drawings, plans, log books, and other records. SCOPE & CONTENT The Vancouver Maritime Museum (VMM) Archives collection consists of archival records donated to the Vancouver Maritime Museum from a wide variety of sources over a period of sixty years since the museum opened. Some of the archival records were originally processed and filed as the Library "ephemera" collection. They have since been removed from the Library database and processed as part of this collection. The collection consists of correspondence; merchant service and naval certificates; reports and research notes; journals, diaries and logbooks; ledgers; vessel construction plans; photographs and negatives; newsletters, and oral histories recorded on DVD’s and audiocassette tapes. The collection also consists of small collections that were not large enough to be their own stand-alone collections. The collection has been arranged into 16 series, primarily based on record types. ARRANGEMENT Arrangement created by the Archivist as original order was unknown.
