Potoczniak Since Ukraine's independence, a burgeoning private sector has been increasingly encroaching in cultural spaces that previously were conceived of as "property of the state." This dissertation is an ethnographic account of how objects of cultural heritage are being re-configured within the new post-Soviet economy. Specifically, it focuses on sound archive field recordings of traditional music and how they are being transformed into cultural commodities. Regarding the jurisdiction of culture -- who controls cultural heritage and how it is used to represent ethnic and national identity -- my research shows how these boundaries are increasingly being negotiated within structures of social, cultural and political power. Thus, culture becomes a contested object between competing ideological systems: cultural heritage as a means to salvage and reconstruct repressed histories and to revive former national traditions, on the one hand, and cultural heritage as a creative, future-oriented force to construct new identities in growmg consumer marketplaces. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to a great number of individuals, who played an important role in my graduate work and the completion of this research project. Our objective was to record folk music for a compact disc featuring traditional Ukrainian music. In one remote area, we asked a folk singer to perform the traditional songs from her native village. To our surprise, the singer declined the request. Apparently, a contractual agreement between this woman and a private company in faraway Kyiv prohibited the villager from publicly singing folk songs without its prior consent. We had no other recourse than to emphasize our collective association with the state archives. The singer eventually acquiesced to our pleas for cooperation and we recorded her songs without reflecting too much on this incident. However, I realized later that this episode was not some random misunderstanding between ethnographer and informant. Rather, it reflected more far-reaching cultural and social transformations that are prevalent today in many post-socialist countries like Ukraine. This dissertation examines how objects of cultural heritage are being re­ configured within the new post-Soviet economy. Specifically, I focus on folk songs and how they are being transformed into cultural commodities. Many social transformations in. post-socialist countries are driven by public policies that promote nation-building agendas and by free market reforms that are sanctioned by international financial and cultural institutions. Since Ukraine's independence in 1991, a burgeoning private sector 2 has been encroaching increasingly in cultural ~paces that previously were conceived of as "property of the state." As described above, new questions regarding the jurisdiction of culture -- who controls cultural heritage and how it is used to represent ethnic and national identity - are being negotiated within structures of social, cultural and political power. Thus, culture has become a contested object between competing ideological systems: cultural heritage as a means to salvage and reconstruct repressed histories and to revive former national traditions, on the one hand; and cultural heritage as a creative, future-oriented force to construct wholly new identities in growing consumer marketplaces, on the other. Current research on cultural heritage collections especially in post-socialist countries increasingly examines the effects of transition from the perspective of global and institutional processes. For example, there exists a rich body of work that studies the political, technological, and legal challenges experienced in many. modem memory

    32 The Secret Speech of Lirnyky and Kobzari Encoding a Life Style Andrij Hornjatkevyč, Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies University of Alberta In Ukraine, minstrels have been part of the folk tradition for centuries. There were two types of minstrels: kobzari who played a stringed musical instrument called the kobza, later to develop into the bandura, and lirnyky, who played the crank-driven hurdy-gurdy called the lira. These minstrels were traveling musicians – and much more besides. They were major sources of historical and religious information and, interestingly, most of them were blind. This infirmity made them dependent upon others for their livelihood, but they were not beggars. On the contrary, they were well-respected by the general populace. As with other professional groups, they belonged to guilds and new members, young children, went through an extensive apprenticeship period. Minstrels also spoke using a secret language called lebiis’ka mova, henceforth the Lebian language (argot) or Lebian. It should be pointed out immediately that this was not a full-fledged language with a distinct phonetic, lexical, morphological, and syntactic system. On the contrary, its underlying structure was that of contemporary Ukrainian, but crucial standard Ukrainian lexemes – nouns, pronouns, adjectives, numerals and verbs – were replaced by others. To an outsider, i.e., one not initiated into the guild, who might chance to hear a conversation in this argot, it might sound like Ukrainian, but, except for such ancillary parts of speech such as conjunctions, prepositions, interjections and particles – words that carry only relational information – it would be entirely unintelligible. This was reinforced by the fact that Lebian lexemes would be inflected – declined or conjugated – exactly as analogous Ukrainian words would be.

To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes. The data have been obtained and XML-annotated using the Python program- ming language and the libraries lyricsmas- ter/yattag. The corpus has been preprocessed and basic statistical data have been gener- ated by the XSL transformation. The diacritic restoration has been carried out in the Slovo Majstor and LeXimir tools (the latter appli- cation has also been used for generating the frequency analysis). The extraction of socio- cultural topics has been performed using the Unitex software, whereas the prevailing top- ics have been visualised with the TreeCloud software.
