NEWCHURCH is a very large parish, extending from the north to the south coast of the island, including Ryde and Ventnor, a distance of about 12 miles, in the East Medina liberty, distant 5 miles S.E. by E. from Newport, and 6 S.W. from Ryde. The church (All Saints) is an ancient cruciform edifice, in the Early English style, with nave, aisles, ~nd transepts, chancel, organ, with tower and small spire and .six bells, and contains several ancient monuments of the Dillington and Bassett families, &c., &c. '1'he living is a vicarage, with that of Ryde annexed, joint annual value £460, in the gift of the Bishop of Gloucester and .Bristol, and held by the Rev. William Barding Girdlestone, M.A., of Ryde; the Rev Medland is the resident curate. The village is situated on the southern bank of a small river, which flows into Brading harbour. This parish comprises nearly 9,000 acres. Population in 1861, 14,000. Mrs. Poore is owner of the manorial rights. Down, one of the highest hills on the island, is in this parish. .
