Group 3: Jennifer Day, Xander Jarnow, Duke Mcghee, Shelby Stehn, Adam Vandenhouten, Tyler Kallevig Reasons Why We Chose Queen
Queen Group 3: Jennifer Day, Xander Jarnow, Duke McGhee, Shelby Stehn, Adam Vandenhouten, Tyler Kallevig Reasons Why We Chose Queen: There are a lot of reasons that we, as a group, decided to do our project on Queen. Queen is an extremely well-known band across multiple generations, so it is an artist that we can talk to almost anyone anywhere about. Additionally, they were an influence to many artists after them. Finally, they released over 15 albums that showed a very impressive musical range and an awe-inspiring amount of talent. Queen: Overview Queen was one of the most popular and successful rock groups during the 1970s and 80s, with a very unique, experimental style and sound, Queen has remained one of the best selling artists of all time. The band began its formation in 1967, when the guitarist Brian May and the drummer Roger Taylor joined with Tim Staffell to form a rock group named Smile. When Tim Staffell left the group, May and Taylor joined forces with Freddie Mercury and a bass player named John Deacon, resulting in the core version of the band in 1970. Queen was famous for bright, glam, “pomp-rock” and put on energetic shows. Freddie Mercury in particular was known for his flamboyant style. Their sound was a very produced and incorporated elements of glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, and harmony. After the tragic death of Freddie Mercury the band added new members and continued performing Even today their songs remain popular, for example, “We Are the Champions,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “We Will Rock You” are still played often. -

I want to go on remembered that it loved Queen. “It was the perfect stage for there and die for the show!” Freddie,” said Geldof. “He could ponce about in front of the Some stars are celebrated because of their early death. Freddie whole world.” Mercury is no such star. Queen made him famous, Live Aid made The band’s subsequent Magic shows of 1986 proved them him a legend, and death made him immortal. masters of stadium rock. The tour ended—as did Mercury’s Farrokh Bulsara first made music in his native Zanzibar, in school touring history—with a spectacular performance at Knebworth band The Hectics. Relocating to Britain, he joined guitarist Brian in England’s Hertfordshire, in front of 120,000 fans. May and drummer Roger Taylor in Smile in 1970. His stage name Mercury’s solo career ticked over with a cover of the Platters’ paid tribute to the messenger of the gods, but Mercury was also, “The Great Pretender” in 1987 and a titanic team-up with opera in astrological terms, his rising planet. With bassist John Deacon, singer Montserrat Caballe on the splendidly silly “Barcelona.” Smile became Queen—whose triumphs like “Bohemian Rhapsody” Mercury’s final solo single in his lifetime was 1989’s forgotten obscure a discography packed with gems. -

Queen Has Over Four Decades Continued to Find New Fans and Hold an Indelible Influence on Generations of Music Makers
Sterling song craft, virtuoso musicality, outrageous glamour and colossal spectacle: Queen has over four decades continued to find new fans and hold an indelible influence on generations of music makers. Despite the loss of lead singer and songwriting partner Freddie Mercury more than 20 years ago, Queen’s electrifying artistry continues to shake stadiums, to galvanize arenas and to enthrall audiences worldwide. The statistics are simply staggering: sales in the hundreds of millions of units, an unprecedented string of number one albums and top-charting singles, seven UK Ivor Novello Awards; Induction into The UK Music Hall of Fame, the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and The Songwriters Hall of Fame; MTV Global Icon Award; Songs enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Queen has spent 1,422 weeks on the British charts ...over 27 years total, with their Greatest Hits according to BPI sales statistics the best-selling album in Britain UK between 1956 to 2013 (first released in 1981, close on 6 million sales). Queen’s achievement is amazing, to even see off The Beatles classic, Sergeant Pepper, an album that shook the world. Four individual talents: Brian May, an incredible guitarist who has earned a PhD in Astrophysics; Roger Taylor, one of the most influential drummers of all time; John Deacon, a fast and facile bassist, multi-instrumentalist and a brilliant electronics engineer; and Freddie Mercury, certainly one of most riveting showman to ever command a stage, with one common thread, the ability to marry a fantastic sense of melody and song structure to a swaggering presentation. -
The Truth About the Eucharist-Peter Kreeft
The Truth About the Eucharist – by Dr. Peter Kreeft Socrates and Plato and Aristotle and Buddha and Confucius and Lao Tzu all gave us their minds; Christ gave us his body. They all tried to save the world from ignorance by their philosophies; Christ did save the world from sin and death and hell by his body and his blood, both on the cross and in the Eucharist. Buddha said, “Look not to me; look to my teaching.” Christ said, “Come unto me.” Philosophers all say, “I teach the truth.” Christ said, “I am the truth.” When we receive the Eucharist, we eat the truth. Christ is the meaning of life, so when we receive Him, we receive the meaning of life into our bodies, not just into our minds. The gospel is a series of events culminating in a marriage. The bridegroom, Christ, and the bride, his church – us, both come a long way to meet and marry each other. He comes from eternity to time, from heaven to earth, from spirit to matter, from perfection to a world full of sin, and lives full of sin. He brings us from absolute nothingness into being by creation and our birth and then into his church - into his body - by the sacraments, beginning with baptism which is our second birth. Now all of these are dramatic events. They are good news. Since our religion is essentially the good news, it is proper to ask about it the five questions that news reporters are told to ask about the events they report - who, what, why, when, and where. -

The Official International Queen Fan Club | Summer 2015 Well, the Years Roll By, Folks
QUEEN The Official International Queen Fan Club | Summer 2015 Well, the years roll by, folks. Roger and I, along with Adam and the whole Queen Team, are starting to prepare mentally for our swing through South America next month. Amazing that we should be still thundering around the world crashing through herds of Queen songs with that phenomenal GFG Adam Lambert. Well, yes, it’s hard to talk sense these days. In my view, the world has gone mad. or someone’s Compassion is a lost concept, all decisions are made on the basis of how they affect ‘The Economy’ personal wealth and power, and selfishness—the F—k You philosophy—rules. So here I am, ranting on as I do. But I’m a musician, right? Yes, we’ll be seeing you out there in Sao Paulo and Rio and Buenos Aires and Santiago and Cordoba and Porto Alegre … how thrilling. It’s almost exactly 30 years since we headlined the very first Rock in Rio night—with Freddie, and John, of course, and now we return to a new young audience of rockers, with Adam, who I’m convinced they will adore. It was all sold out From the ‘One Voice’ video—see https://youtu.be/0plWNDyA6Ig months ago, so it ought to be wild. Behind the scenes, Queen activity is always in full swing. The chaps have been working on a new Hi Everyone! historical venture Queen at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1975. This concert was very special because it was the first time we ever played a whole show completely live onTV … the Christmas Show. -
A Marriage Made in Heaven? 'Racine' and 'Love'
Campbell, J. (2006) A marriage made in Heaven? 'Racine' and 'love'. Modern Language Review, 101 (3). pp. 682-690. ISSN 0026-7937 http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/5076/ Deposited on: 13 March 2009 Enlighten – Research publications by members of the University of Glasgow http://eprints.gla.ac.uk A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN? ‘RACINE’ AND ‘LOVE’ If you attempted to identify the properties of that apparently homogeneous product marketed as ‘Racine’, it would be hard not to conclude, from much of the critical evidence available, that love was of the essence. For over three centuries, commentators have sought to explain what makes Racine di·erent from Corneille partly by stressing the importance accorded to love in Racine’s plays. The unfavourable judgements made by Saint-Evremond‹ and other con- temporaries, or the reservations expressed even by admirers of Racine such as Voltaire, were based on the premiss that the playwright impaired the dignity of the tragic genre by transforming figures of heroic stature such as Alexander and Pyrrhus into slaves to love: ‘c’est un spectacle indigne de voir le courage d’un Heros‹ amolli par des larmes et des soupirs’. As a corollary to this supposed takeover by passionate love, a traditional and still common critical position is to regard this ‘Racinian’ love as predicating some bleak if not ‘Jansenist’ vision. Human beings are rendered unable to control their destinies by an irrational power that subjugates reason and will: Phedre› is a child of original sin. For many, seemingly, all roads in the land of Racine lead to love, that vale of tears far from a paradise lost for ever but paradoxically sought through love.
