Rosalia (Nitra), 21 p. 167-184. In the period of 2007 we realized a faunistic research on Diptera in the National Nature Reserve Bábsky les (South Slovakia). Using Malaise trap method we totally recorded 444 flies species belonging to 62 Pegomya calyptrata families. Several of them (e.g. Cnemophora fastuosa, Fannia immutica, Orfelia pallida, Hercostomus praeceps, Catharosia pygmaea and Pegomya calyptrata) are first finding for Slovakia and other ones (e.g. Keroplatus dispar, Ogcodes pallipes, Oedalea tibialis, Suillia notata, S. variegata, Suillia gigantea, Stegana mehadiae, Stegana coleoptrata, Hippobosca longipennis, Xylomya maculata, Keroplatus testaceus, Gastrolepta anthracina) are rare and indicate a high natural quality at the sites. Key words: Diptera, Nature reserve Bábsky les, abundance, faunistic Úvod Vzácny zbytok prirodzeného lesného spoločenstva dubovo-hrabového lesa na černozemi v intenzívne poľnohospodársky obrábanej krajine bol ako chránené územie vyhlásený v roku 1966 na ploche 30,39 ha. Jeho cenologické študie, včetne radu dvojkrídleho hmyzu, boli intenzívne započaté najmä na prelome 70-tych rokov v rámci medzinárodného biologického výskumu IBP. Zistené výsledky sú zhrnuté v monografii Diptera Slovenska I, II, III (ČEPELÁK et al., 1984, 1986, 1989). -

ABSTRACT OF THESIS IMPACT OF DIETARY DIVERSIFICATION ON INVASIVE SLUGS AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL WITH NOTES ON SLUG SPECIES OF KENTUCKY Increasing introductions of non-native terrestrial slugs (Mollusca: Gastropoda) are a concern to North American regulatory agencies as these generalists impact the yield and reduce the aesthetic value of crop plants. Understanding how the increase in diversification in North American cropping systems affects non-native gastropods and finding effective biological control options are imperative for pest management; however, little research has been done in this area. This study tested the hypothesis that dietary diversification affects the biological control capacity of a generalist predator and allows the slug pest Deroceras reticulatum (Müller) (Stylommatophora: Agriolimacidae) to more effectively fulfill its nutritional requirements. -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

THE MOTHS OF CAITHNE SS THE MOTHS OF DUNNET F O R E S T CAITHNESS A REVIEW OF THE MOTH SPECIES RECORDED IN DUNNET FOREST CAITHNESS AS AT THE ST 31 DECEMBER 2018 N E I L M O N E Y COUNTY MOTH RECORDER CAITHNESS PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW The development of Dunnet Forest from the original Forestry Commission experimental coniferous woodland to a community woodland managed by the community through the Dunnet Forestry Trust has reached a stage where changes in habitat are starting to drive change in the moth species being recorded in the forest. The purpose of this review is to detail moth species recorded up to 31st December 2018 to provide a base line against which future change can be monitored BACKGROUND The original forest was planted by the Forestry Commission in the mid-1950s as an experiment in forestry planting on poor soils. The forest was acquired by Scottish Natural Heritage in 1984 and is part of the Dunnet Links Site of Special Scientific Interest. Since 2003 the forest has been under the management of the Dunnet Forestry Trust (DFT) a community trust run by volunteers and employing two part time professional foresters. Covering 104 hectares the original coniferous planting was of a range of species but dominated by Sitka Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, Corsican Pine and Mountain Pine. About half of the area developed into mature forest with the remainder become a mixture of open space, scattered trees and scrub woodland.1 A CHANGING HABITAT DFT have been pro-active in the managing the forest both as a recreational resource for the community and in diversifying the habitat. -

Therefore, it appears as a wise bet-hedging strategy to manage reserves in diverse and patchy manners. Using portable light traps, we surveyed the effects of two contrasting management options, mowing and temporary abandonment, applied in a humid grassland reserve in a submountain area of the Czech Republic. Besides of Macrolepidoptera, we also surveyed Microlepidoptera, small moths rarely considered in community studies. Numbers of individiuals and species were similar in the two treatments, but ordionation analyses showed that catches originating from these two treatments differed in species composition, management alone explaining ca 30 per cent of variation both for all moths and if split to Marcolepidoptera and Microlepidoptera. Whereas a majority of macrolepidopteran humid grassland specialists preferred unmown sections or displayed no association with management, microlepidopteran humid grassland specialists contained equal representation of species inclining towards mown and unmown sections. We thus revealed that even mown section may host valuable species; an observation which would not have been detected had we considered Macrolepidoptera only.
