Master Thesis Project Artificial Intelligence Adaptation in Video Games Author: Anastasiia Zhadan Supervisor: Aris Alissandrakis Examiner: Welf Löwe Reader: Narges Khakpour Semester: VT 2018 Course Code: 4DV50E Subject: Computer Science Abstract One of the most important features of a (computer) game that makes it mem- orable is an ability to bring a sense of engagement. This can be achieved in numerous ways, but the most major part is a challenge, often provided by in-game enemies and their ability to adapt towards the human player. How- ever, adaptability is not very common in games. Throughout this thesis work, aspects of the game control systems that can be improved in order to be adapt- able were studied. Based on the results gained from the study of the literature related to artificial intelligence in games, a classification of games was de- veloped for grouping the games by the complexity of the control systems and their ability to adapt different aspects of enemies behavior including individual and group behavior. It appeared that only 33% of the games can not be con- sidered adaptable. This classification was then used to analyze the popularity of games regarding their challenge complexity. Analysis revealed that simple, familiar behavior is more welcomed by players. However, highly adaptable games have got competitively high scores and excellent reviews from game critics and reviewers, proving that adaptability in games deserves further re- search. Keywords: artificial intelligence in games, adaptability in games, non-player character adaptation, challenge Preface Computer games have become an interest for me not so long ago, but since then they have turned almost into a true passion.

  • Procedural Content Generation for Computer Games
Procedural Content Generation for Computer Games Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Yinxuan Shi, B.S. Graduate Program in Computer Science and Engineering The Ohio State University 2016 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Roger Crawfis, Advisor Dr. Yusu Wang Dr. Eric Fosler-Lussier Dr. Neelam Soundarajan Copyrighted by Yinxuan Shi 2016 Abstract Procedural Content Generation (PCG) is no new concept for the gaming industry. From early games like Rogue (1980) and The Sentinel (1986) to more recent games like Diablo III (2012) and Path of Exile (2013), PCG is heavily used in dungeons, quests, mini bosses and even storyline creation. The advantages PCG offers is not just limited to empowering game designers with fast content prototype/creation, but can also provide in-game adaptation to player’s response and small memory footprint. While there is much research on PCG, few results contribute to the evaluation: Does the generated content makes the game more interesting/fun? To answer this question, we examine two applications of PCG. One is level creation and another is visual content creation such as crowds. For level creation, the existing techniques mainly focus on map/terrain generation. In games where the player either avoids or engages in combat against hostile targets, the player’s experience involves other aspects such as enemy and resource placement and navigation. The problem of creating a fun level can be formulated into searching for a good combination of these aspects. This leads to two problems: 1.

(Re)Mark(s) of the Ninja: Replaying the Remnants Pierre-Marc Côté University of Montreal, Department of Art History and Film Studies 3200 Jean-Brillant, Montreal (Quebec, Canada), H3T 1N8 [email protected] ABSTRACT The author makes an appraisal of the videogame Mark of the Ninja (Klei 2012) through the analysis of its construction of temporality. Appropriating the framework of litterature scholar Éric Méchoulan, time is described as the anachronistic folding of the past upon the present. The theme of time and memory in the game is paralleled with Méchoulan’s media-archeological approach to western metaphysics, insisting on the material processes and ethics of thought, mediation and transmission. As the game applies such treatment of the mythical past of the fictional world, it is also aesthetically molding the experience of gameplay through marks as objects for an archeology of gamespace. It leads to critical approaches to cultural legitimacy and violence that nonetheless leaves the pleasures of narrative and play intact. Finally, the author uses David Bohm’s concept of suspension, showing how the articulation of contemplation and gameplay performances makes time for critical play. Keywords Temporality, Intertextuality, Violence, Reflexivity, Interface The nostalgia felt for video games is not nostalgia for a state before the trauma of the games disrupted us, but a desire to recapture that mind-altering experience of being in a game for the first time. It is a yearning for liminality itself – for the moment of transition - Sean Fenty, Playing the Past INTRODUCTION: SNEAKING THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP As Felan Parker convincingly demonstrated in his study of the rise of Jason Rohrer’s game Passage (2007) to art-house status, cultural and artistic legitimation “are not benign, natural processes” (2013, p.56).

The origins of the series are traced back to 2001. The third entry – called by the producer Jonathan Riedler from THQ Nordic “not just a prequel, but… also a kind of reboot” to the series (Riedler) – was developed by the studio Mimimi Games in 2020. The game tells the story of six outlaws undertaking various tasks on the American frontier; blowing up a bridge and defending a ranch are just a few activities. Mimimi Games gained popularity due to their previous work: a stealth- based tactics Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (2016). In the title Japanese warriors use techniques of espionage and sabotage to assassinate opponents of the shogun. Despite a totally different setting and time, Desperados III bears a strong resemblance to Shadow Tactics; this covers the same mechanics, per- spective and – above all – genre. In Desperados III the formula of the western is adapted into the combination of a stealth and strategy. The aim of the article is to prove that in the process of this adaptation the western game breaks away with the conventions of the genre established by the classic literature and – above all – film. The analysis begins with the delineation of a history of the kind under discussion; then such elements of Desperados III as its gameplay, Dagmara Kottke temporality, perspective and environmental design are examined in the context of the transmedia relocation of the genre.
