Themalijst Starten met Blues Inleiding De Openbare Bibliotheek Kortrijk heeft een zeer uitgebreide Bluescollectie van een paar duizend cd’s (én een paar duizend vinylelpees) waardoor het voor een leek moeilijk is het bos door de bomen te zien. We zien voor de beginner die iets meer wil weten over blues drie opties: 1. Je komt naar de Bib en grasduint wat in onze fantastische collectie. Grote kans dat je de ‘verkeerde’ cd’s meeneemt en voorgoed de blues afzweert. Wat jammer zou zijn.. 2. Je neemt enkel verzamel-cd’s mee, bijvoorbeeld de box (5 cd’s) van de filmregisseur Martin Scorsese Ok, dan heb je een staalkaart van het beste wat er ooit verschenen is. Maar wil je nog dieper gaan, meer exploreren, meer voelen wat échte blues is.. Dan lees je 3. De beknopte lijst hieronder die in enkele tientallen cd’s je wegwijs maakt in de verschillende subgenres van de blues. Verwacht geen uitgebreide biografieën of discografieën maar een kort situeren van de belangrijkste stromingen met haar prominentste vertegenwoordigers. Dit is alleen maar een kennismaking, een aanzet. Als je van al deze artiesten één cd beluisterd hebt, kan je al wat meepraten over blues. Hieronder vind je enkele interessante bronnen (met nog meer info en mogelijkheden) In het huidig klassement zit alle Blues in de rubriek 70, geklasseerd op zanger, muzikant of groep. !! Let op !!! The Sound Journey of Little Walter Fraser Finlayson Will Panther April 24, 2010 Preface After over forty years of playing blues harmonica, I was planning on codify- ing my thoughts on Little Walter Jacobs. Following an unrelated discussion with collaborator Will Panther on early recording techniques for his own project, he stumbled on sound engineer Bill Putnam's role in recording Wal- ter. What began as a personal opinion article reached a literary crossroads, and a more objective, structured examination began. ABSTRACT the Blending of African-American and European
ABSTRACT The Blending of African-American and European Aesthetics in the Guitar Performance of British Blues from 1965 to 1967 Patrick T. Kelly, M.M. Mentor: Jean Ann Boyd, Ph.D. British blues guitarists emerging in the mid-1960s incorporated a musical vocabulary which borrowed heavily from recordings of the modern blues’ African- American, postwar originators. Crucial differences in the way the British interpreted this material in their own recorded performances are reflective of deeply embedded aesthetics unique to their European musical heritage and cultural experience. Through the detailed analysis of transcribed performances by British guitarists in comparison to performances by the African-American guitarists they sought to emulate, the syntactical elements of these differences are observable. Using this comparative methodology, this study gathers evidence of the blending of European and African-American aesthetics in sample British blues guitar performances from 1965 to 1967. Placing this musical evidence into context amid the cultural and ideological currents affecting Great Britain during the mid-1960s offers insight to the societal and philosophical forces shaping this influential strand of blues development. ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: FATHERS AND SONS: AMERICAN BLUES AND BRITISH ROCK MUSIC, 1960-1970 Andrew James Kellett, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor Jeffrey Herf Department of History This dissertation examines the unique cultural phenomenon of British blues-based rock music in the 1960s. It provides answers to two important questions of trans-Atlantic intellectual and cultural history. First, this dissertation will provide answers to two questions. First, it interrogates how and why African-American blues music became so popular amongst a segment of young, primarily middle-class men in Great Britain. It maps out ―blues trade routes‖—that is, the methods by which the music was transmitted to Britain. It explains the enthusiasm shown by young male Britishers largely in terms of their alienation from, and dissatisfaction with, mainstream British masculinity. Seen in this light, the ―adoption‖ of African-American bluesmen as replacement ―fathers‖ can be seen as an attempt to fill a perceived cultural need. This dissertation will also examine how these young British men, having formed bands to perform their own music, began in the mid-1960s to branch out from the blues. In a developing dialogue with like-minded bands from the United States, bands such as the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds started combining the lessons of the blues with other cultural influences such as jazz, classical music and English folk. The resulting cultural bricolage innovated popular music on both sides of the Atlantic from the 1970s onward. The dissertation draws on a variety of primary sources, including the popular music press, published interviews with key musicians, and, of course, the recorded music itself.
