Dr. Frank-Jürgen Richter Chairman Horasis: The Global Visions Community Switzerland . 2 Welcome Let me extend a warm welcome to all participants of the 2012 Global China Business Meeting! Last year the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Latvia celebrated 20 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. In that time we have come to know each other better through contacts at all levels and in all fields. Over the past years I have visited China several times and witnessed its impressive economic development. I am pleased that the GCBM in Riga will give our visitors a chance to learn more about the many advantages of doing business in Latvia. As Prime Minister since 2009, I have taken a personal interest in making Latvia a safe and attractive destination for foreign investment and trade. I am confident that the GCBM will lead to new and fruitful business contacts between China and Latvia, to our mutual benefit. I look forward to meeting you in Riga on 25-26 November! Valdis Dombrovskis Prime Minister of Latvia . 3 Welcome Distinguished participants of the Global China Business meeting 2012! I sincerely welcome you to the 2012 Global China Business meeting in Riga, Latvia! For many of you this is the first time in our capital city and country. I can assure you that our first meeting hap- pens just at the right time and in the right place. In recent years the world has witnessed serious and profound events. To a various degree, the financial crisis influenced all of us. Yet Latvia has emerged from the crisis as a stronger and much more efficient player in the global economy. While many other countries are still struggling with the crisis, Latvia is ahead of the economic cycle in Europe. Our economy grew by 5.5 percent in 2011 and is likely to reach a healthy 5 percent growth this year. Our exports and industrial output have exceeded their pre-crisis levels. As “an island of stability in the restless waters of Europe”, Latvia is an excellent destination for your visit and your business. Latvia is well positioned in many ways. We hold a unique and excellent geographic location in the heart of Northern Europe, between the East and West. Being deeply integrated into the Western business culture, Latvia’s market and logistics networks offer you a bridge to Eastern European countries, CIS, Central Asia and further to China. There is no doubt that small, flexible, well-run countries like Latvia are the best partners to build business with in an increasingly interconnected world. And Latvia is ready and willing to become your partner in Europe. Therefore, the 2012 Global China Business Meeting is an excellent platform for the development of closer relationship with China and business representatives from other countries. We shall cer- tainly explore in depth China’s increasing role in the global economic landscape and development opportunities it presents us with. I sincerely hope that you will take your time in Riga to explore the opportunities available here for the expansion of economic and business cooperation, as well as experience our beautiful city with its abundant historic scenery. I wish you a very successful meeting! . Daniels Pavluts Minister of Economics of the Republic of Latvia 4 Welcome Welcome to Riga – the metropolis of the Baltic Sea region and one of the significant capital cities of Europe with more than 800 year history! Riga has always been a city with strong potential for development, and today it remains the driving force of the Latvian economy concentrating 77% of foreign direct investment, as well as strategically important cooperation partner and one of the largest cities in Northern Europe, which is recognized as one of the most important regions of the world for business development. Being the centre of well-developed transport infrastructure, today Riga ful - fills the functions of main transportation hub between East and West markets. It is still natural platform for trade between the EU and growing Russian consumers market. Great location at the junction of international railways and highways, as well as access to an international airport with direct flights to 79 destinations and ice free port, are essential preconditions for Riga’s economic competitiveness on a world scale. Nowadays Riga is one of the most attractive areas for investment in the Northern Europe – educated workface and low business costs, turns city into an attractive investment destination and it’s justified by countries’ liberal tax policy, low business start-up costs, as well as comparatively low produc - tion and service costs. Dear colleagues, entrepreneurs and leaders of business organizations, the city of Riga sees a great potential for possible cooperation with China in econo - mic, tourism and commercial issues and I wish to express my belief that this Global Chinese Business Meeting in Riga will build up strong successful relationship and help to expand business contacts for every participant as well as you all will enjoy hospitality, atmosphere and culture life of Riga city! . Latvia is bordered by Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Lithuania to the south and the Baltic Sea to the west. Its strategic lo- cation has made it an international crossroad for trade, commerce and cultural exchange since ancient times. Vikings followed the ‘Amber Road’ through Latvian territory along the Daugava River to reach Byzantium and the Medi- terranean Sea.
