Beginning his 23rd season as head coach of the University of San Diego baseball program, John Cun ningham has guided the Toreros from a NCAA Division II power to one of the most respected Division I teams in the Southern California region. John enters this season just eight games shy of 500 career victories. A native of San Diego, Cunning ham attended St. Augustine High School where he was a scholastic and athletic standout receiving AII-CIF honors in baseball and led the County in scoring during his senior year basketball season. Cunningham attended the University of San Francisco where he again was a baseball and basketball standout, while also making the Presidents' Honor Roll six times and achieving membership in the National Jesuit Honor Society, "Alpha Sigma Nu." He received a B.S. Degree in History as well as a general secondary credential. In basket ball, John was named to the All-Conference and Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-American teams. Baseball cornered him a profes sional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In his senior year, Cunning ham was USF's "Athlete of the Year." John began his career at USO in 1962, with 1981 seeing him win his 400th game. From 1969 through 1984, the Toreros have compiled twelve winning seasons out of seventeen. His teams have won thirty or more games five times, first in 1971; then back to back in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981 . Four of his teams have gone to post-season playoffs; two of the four becoming regional champions and College participants. The 1971 team won the regional title while setting the school record of 34 wins. For that performance, Cunningham was named District 8 "Coach of the Year." 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place (14-12) finish in the SCBA. His 1980 Torero team finished the year at 30-25-1 (14-14 SCBA} and , in 1981 USD finished the year 30-15-1 and a fourth place finish in the Conference with a 15-12-1 record. 1982 was USD's first year under the .500 mark in SCBA action with a 13-15 record and a 29-24-1 overall mark. The last three seasons the Toreros have fallen below the .500 mark, however, Coach Cunningham is confident his '86 squad will be very competitive in the West Coast Athletic Conference this season. Besides coaching baseball , John works for the National League of the Association as the San Diego Padres official scorer. John and his wife Nancy have one son, Geoffrey, age 11.

Coach Cunningham, with a career mark ol 492-489-1 0, returns eleven lettermen and six starters. The '86 squad will have a lot of new laces , including ten freshmen. The rest of the squad is made up of 4 sophomores , 5 juniors and 5 seniors. Although USO ~st seven lettermen to graduation. the key player to replace will be '85 team MVP, Paul Van Stone . Van Stone, who was dratted by the San Francisco Giants, led USO in hitting (. 305), at bats (203), hits (62). RBl's (46) and total bases (103). He was second in runs scored (38), doubles (14) and tri ples (6). Starters back to lead the charges include senior centertie~er David Jacas. David batted .299 and led the team in runs scored (47) and stolen bases (24).Sophomores Marl< Tratton (. 298 BA, 8 HR's) and Sean Baron (. 291 BA, 7 HR's), two of the better young power hitters in the WCAC, should improve on their '85 totals. Junior shortstop Robbie Rogers (. 288 BA, 8 triples) will provide the leadership necessary in the infield, and scphomore David Rolls (. 254 BA) returns at third base. John Slaught, a3-year man, returns in righttield . Senior Tom Sizer is USD'son ly returning pitcher that started more than 10 games in '85 . Coach Cunningham is looking for improved performances from Sizer and senior Mike David. Top newcomers to the pitching staff include JC transfer Dan Newman (San Diego C.C.) and freshman John Bonilla (Notre Dame HS). A ccuple of sleepers on the mound might be freshman Jim Westlund (Wilson HS) and Tony Battilega (Bear Creek HS, Cclorado). The stopper in the bullpen hasn't emerged yet for a concerned Cunningham . Junior Dan Echeveste (. 212 BA) will be put to the test early on by freshman recruit Chuck Graham (8 HR's at St. Paul HS). Two newcomers that will sclK!ify the infield are JC transfer John Holt (also USD's possible DH) and freshman second baseman Andy Roberts (Clairemont HS). USO, which plays a record 35 home games this season, will prepare for WCAC action with nonconference opponents like Fresno State (3 games). San Diego State (2 games). UC Irvine (3 games), and Division II powers CS Northridge and UC Riverside. Geach Cunningham feels that Pepperdine is again the league favonte whrle Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara are vastly improved. St. Mary's cou ld have the league's most outstanding player in re li ever Ken Aiensche. ~we fi nished last a year ago. I would consider ii a successful season if we end up in the middle of the WCAC pack at the end. This is the youngest team I've ever had. It's hard to predict the players transition from high school to college bal!. There is ade fi nite possibility that six of our nine starters will be frEJshme n and sophomores. That is awful young for a 4-year schoo l. An advantage over last year is abetter balance between nght and lett-handed hitting . We ccu~ have four lett-handed hitters in·our lineup. We haven 't had that capability in awhi le. Youth could work to our advantage this season. We're going to give these freshmen achance to play and hopefull y by league we'll have scme stab lity inour lineup," stated Geach .klhn Cun ru ngham .
