    Wiltshire Botany 12, 2011, pages 26-35 BIODIVERSITY AT PARISH What is biodiversity? LEVEL Biodiversity is a term for the variety of wildlife which we ought to be maintaining and enhancing. It The example of Winsley refers to the existence of a large number of species, and variations within species, of living things (eg Pyramidal Orchid, the Marbled White butterfly), of John Presland the different communities of which they form a part (eg species-rich limestone grassland), and of the environments which these species and communities require (eg limestone grassland which has not been agriculturally improved by fertilisers, herbicides, etc). It is perhaps a fuller definition of “nature”, but with value judgements implied. The term “biodiversity” appears to have become more prominent than the formerly popular term “nature conservation”. Perhaps this is because “nature conservation” had become too associated in the public mind with maintaining rare species rather than a wide variety of species and a variety of entire communities. Biodiversity encompasses both. Cerasus , and doubt much as to the value of some of the book characters. The under surface of the leaves is said to be pubescent in P. Avium, but glabrous in P. Cerasus. I find it to be much the same in both, viz. thinly hairy. Many continental authors derive a character from the petioles, say- ing of P. Avium "petioles with one or two (large) glands at the top ;" and of P. Cerasus " glands on the petioles none or mounting to the lower teeth of the leaves." I am convinced, however, that no reliance can be placed on this. Perhaps the shape of the adult leaves and the suckers of P. Cerasus afford the best characters. [P. PADUS, L. This is a circular walk “ East of Bath, the Kennet & Avon Canal passes through the Limpley Stoke valley. With its steep wooded slopes and breathtaking vistas, this is without a shadow of doubt the most magnificent natural landscape along the whole length of the canal. Away from the canal towpath, the walk begins by climbing the valley's hillsides to explore a slice of the West Wiltshire countryside. Climb to the top right-hand corner of this field, where you reach a track leading from Turleigh down to the canal. The views from this point across the Avon valley towards Westwood on the opposite hilltop are worth pausing to enjoy. Cross this track, pass through the kissing gate opposite and continue along an enclosed footpath which climbs the hillside towards Winsley. At the top of the hill, the path joins a quiet lane which is followed through to the B3108 in the centre of Winsley, the lane bearing left by the village bowling club before joining the main road.
