TUBA SKINNY EUROPEAN TOUR 2018 Tournée En France, Belgique Et Pays-Bas Dossier de presse TUBA SKINNY EUROPEAN TOUR 2018 Tournée en France, Belgique et Pays-Bas TUBA SKINNY a commencé de jouer dans les rues de la Nouvelle-Orléans en 2009 et se produit aujourd’hui dans le monde entier Jean-Pierre de Smet et René Chalandon 1 Formation : Erika Lewis - Vocals Todd Burdick - Tuba Shaye Cohn – Cornet Shaye’s musical heritage is impressive, and perhaps goes some way to explain her extraordinary talents as a musician (trumpet/cornet, piano, violin), arranger, composer, artist, and I suspect, quiet power which holds the band together. Granddaughter of Al Cohn, saxophonist with Woody Herman etc. and Marilyn Moore, jazz singer, and daughter of Joe Cohn, guitarist etc., Shaye originally trained as a classical pianist. Where did she go wrong/right! » 3 Prix & Tournées 2014 – Premier prix au "Beat Award", Meilleur album de Jazz Traditionel, Owl Call Blues 2013 et 2016 - New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, New Orleans 2012 à 2017 - French Quarter Festival, New Orleans 2012 à 2016 - Umbria Jazz Festival, Italie 2015 - California Worldfest, Grass Valley, Californie 2014 - Melbourne Festival, Australie 2014 - Fest Jazz, Bretagne, France 2014 - Festival International, Lafayette, Louisiane 2013 - Speigeltent, Melbourne, Australie 2013 - Womadelaide, Australie 2013 - Port Fairy Folk Festival, Australie 2012 - Mona Foma Festival, Tasmanie 2010, 2011 - Vitoria Jazz Festival, Vitoria, Espagne 2011 - Woodford Folk Festival, Australie 2011 - Sydney Festival, Australie 2009 - Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival, Aspen, Colorado Apparition dans "The Treme", Season 3, Episode 7 de HBO • The Little Brown Church. It is rather long, and appears to have been written in 2009. However, it gives a good background on the Traditional Jazz musicians that we see in the Youtube videos, including Shaye (piano/cornet), Barnabus Jones (trombone), and Todd Burdick (tuba). Much of the article describes the Loose Marbles, a loose band around which many of these musicians originally gravitated. The author states, "I’ve also known Shaye for several years. She lived in Chicago at a time when most of my friends there were playing in noise-rock bands, and was definitely the only person I knew who could sight-read Gershwin, or Chopin. Like Ben, she comes from jazz lineage. Her grandfather, Al Cohn, was, Shaye says, a “slightly famous” tenor sax player and big-band arranger. Her parents are both jazz musicians, her father a jazz guitarist and her mother a singer and piano player originally from Japan. The bebop and modern jazz she heard around the house growing up failed to move her. “I just wasn’t interested,” she says. Having played piano from early childhood and reached concert-level by the time she graduated from New York University, Shaye felt compelled to follow her own path. She took up the accordion, and later the trumpet; she, like Todd, took to the rails, playing music wherever she went. This past winter she traveled through Turkey and Greece, playing with the unfortunately-named Cyclowns, an international group of circus performers and gypsy-jazz musicians who in 2006 toured across Asia to Beijing on tall-bikes. But she seems to have found a true calling in playing traditional New Orleans jazz. Out on the corner, playing the Marbles’ well-worn street-piano—it’s painted green and purple, and covered in stickers—she seems absolutely at home. Like Todd, she offers a simple, musical explanation for her love of traditional jazz. “These songs still have the capacity to move people,” she says. “To make people feel something.”" boingboing.net Tuba Skinny : Old timey blues and jazz street act from New Orleans Last week, I caught Tuba Skinny opening for the Dresden Dolls in New Orleans -- Amanda Palmer heard them busking in the French Quarter and invited them out to the show. I got both of their CDs and have been enjoying the hell out of them ever since: this is old timey blues and jazz with an emphasis on standards, arranged with a prominent horn section (as the name implies) and mostly sung by Erika Lewis, who belts it out like Mae West. The band was adorable -- extras from The Little Rascals, and they were as fine to hear live as they are on their CDs, Six Feet Down and Tuba Skinny. The former contains an original track, also called "Six Feet Down," credited to Erika Lewis, that is a really fine song that sounds as good as any of the tried-and-true standards like "At the Jazz Band Ball" and "Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None of My Jelly Roll" that fill out the rest of the disc. CANDCJ sur Youtube Top Deck this wonderful warm and sunny afternoon onboard Paddle Steamer The Natchez, before cruising down and up the mighty Mississippi, Tuba Skinny made their first appearance on the River. Quoting from Steamboat Stomp's presentation: "Tuba Skinny came together in New Orleans in 2009 as a loose collection of street musicians and has since evolved to a fully formed professional band. Their unique sound evokes the rich musical heritage of New Orleans from the early jazz and blues and the twenties and thirties, ragtime, and traditional jazz. The band consists of tuba, trombone, cornet, tenor banjo/guitar, vocals, washboard, and occasionally clarinet. The band has 7 gained a loyal following through their distictibe sound, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs, and their barnstorming live performances." Patrick O'Brienil Love the guy on the washboard wonderful rhythm & timing. They all make a wonderful sound.I am sure if the musicians from the early 20th Century could hear them they would heartily approve.

  • Take Those Dancing Shoes to the Town Hall Tuba Skinny, the Raah Project and Flap!
TAKE THOSE DANCING SHOES TO THE TOWN HALL TUBA SKINNY, THE RAAH PROJECT AND FLAP! The 2013 Castlemaine State Festival music program is packed with an outstanding range of music styles, genres and ages, with international and local artists performing in the Theatre Royal, Town Hall and Castlemaine churches as well as various outdoor rural locations. The walls of the Castlemaine Town Hall are set to burst with excitement when these three diverse bands create a foot-tapping, hip-shaking frenzy under its roof. United States jazzy ensemble, Tuba Skinny, take to the stage on 16 March to add their brassy swing and joyful swagger to the festival stratosphere. Formed in the streets of New Orleans in 2009, Tuba Skinny has steadily evolved from a loose collection of street musicians into a solid ensemble and international phenomenon. Drawing on a wide range of musical influences — from spirituals to Depression-era blues, from ragtime to traditional jazz — their sound evokes the rich musical heritage of their New Orleans home.
