I was think- ing about the Jaipur and decided to skip it, but he’s ready to go. He’s a very good fresh horse.” Michael T. Hall/COGLIANESE PHOTO Hard luck also hit Imprimis in November at Keeneland, when he appeared to be making a potential winning move in deep stretch of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1), only to be impeded and forced to check by Irad Oritz Jr., finishing 13th behind win- ner Glass Slippers (GB). However, when Imprimis has been allowed a clear path, he has been dangerous with victories in the Grade 3 Runhappy Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs over six furlongs on the grass on Sept. 12 and winning the $75,000 Janus Stakes at five furlongs on the turf at Gulf- stream Park on Jan. 1. In one other start this year before the Shaker- town, the 7-year-old son of Broken Vow was second to The Critical Way in the $80,00 Turf Dash at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 24. In a well-traveled career, Imprimis has won six career stakes over five different tracks including victories in the Jim McKay Turf Sprint in May of 2018 at Pimlico and the Wolf Hill two month later at Mon- mouth Park before winning the 2019 Silks Run at Gulfstream Park. “He’s never been the kind of horse that needed a track,” Orseno said. “Last year, I took him [to Saratoga] off a ten month layoff and his first race back was the Troy. He handled it fine and did what he was supposed to do. Unfortunately, they took him down, but he ran his race. It’s kind of the same pattern we’re trying to follow.” Out of the Florida-bred mare Shopper’s Return, by the Sunshine State-bred sire Put It Back, Imprimis has amassed nine career wins from 19 starts with two seconds and two thirds. Bred by Craig L. Wheeler, Imprimis has earnings of $865,983 so a victory Friday would push him near the million dollar mark. Irad Ortiz, Jr. will ride Imprimis from post seven. Conditioned by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Casa Creed arrives at the Troy off his best performance yet, displaying a devastating late turn-of-foot to capture the Grade 1 Jackpocket Jaipur on Day June 5 at , where he earned a career best 105 Beyer Speed Figure. He won his first race with Mahogany Ship in 2000. His first graded-stakes victory would come the following year, but it didn’t come easy. “I saw a horse in for $20,000, but it was Bobby Hale’s horse and I didn’t want to claim from him,” Bishop explained. “His name was Icanseetherain; he won pretty easily, and was claimed by someone else. I tried to buy a piece of the horse after he was claimed, but they wanted $100,000 for a piece of a horse they’d just claimed for $20,000. It was too much, but I really liked that horse. I had my vet check him out, and he told me, ‘don’t buy him, he has an ankle.’ I ended up buying 20% for $20,000.” Icanseetherain was the second longest shot on the board when he was loaded into the starting gate for the 2001 Grade 3 Spectac- ular Bid Stakes, but he stalked the pace under jockey Jose Santos and got up in the final strides to win by a neck.
