About the Department of Library and Information Science The Department of Library Science has been established in the year 2009. The Masters of Library and Information Science program at Assam University, Silchar educates students in the principles, practices, and ethics of library and information science, imbues them with a sense of service to diverse populations, and prepares them to be lifelong learners and active leaders in a rapidly changing information and knowledge society. The Department of Library Science of Assam University is committed to the University’s mission of teaching, learning,

4 research and community services. As a professional department, it will be the department of choice of Assam in general and Barak Valley in particular, which will educate its students, in both theory and practice, to identify, acquire, organize and disseminate information. By integrating technology across the curriculum, the department will impart the knowledge and skills of the profession in preserving and providing access to the records of our cultural heritage and the documents of scholarly research.

About Workshop: The course provides an overview of relevant statistical techniques and its application in social science research in general and library and information science in particular. The participants will be offered hands-on practice in packages such as SPSS and R Programming Language. By the end of the course, participants should be in a position to use various statistical techniques and tools. The Course would train the participants in above areas: Objectives of Workshop: The objective of the course will be to develop an understanding of research techniques and tools for improving capabilities among young researcher and refersh research capabilities of experienced researcher, so as to turn completed research into publishable material in the form of journal articles/books in general and specifically, the objectives will be to: 1. Understanding research and its types and process. 2. Enhance skills in data processing and analysis using SPSS. 3. Learning R for academic and research analysis and reporting. 4. Skill on imparting R in social science research 5. Enhance capacity for writing a research paper for publication and thesis reporting.

Target Group All faculty; research scholars; and students of any recognized university/institute any interested researcher who needs learning research tool and techniques in the library and information science in particular and social science, in general, can apply in the workshop by filling up the prescribed registration form and paying appropriate fees. However, since SPSS and R programming are software tools for statistical analysis, so participants are expected to have some basic knowledge of statistics and computers. An applicant can fill the online application form latest by 20.09.2019 along with requisite fees. There are only 50 vacancies for the program. Preference shall be given to candidates with background knowledge of statistics and computers. Participants are requested to apply early and not to wait for the last date. The students and research scholar are requested to carry a respective institutional ID card or forward the application through the head of the department for claiming fee concession. In case an applicant is selected to the training program, he/she shall be informed

5 by email by the Coordinator of the workshop on or before 20.09.2019. In case the applicant is not selected his/her fees (submitted amount) will be returned.
