He was described as being "Hawaiian to the core"; "a gentle man of education and breeding, suave and intelligent." Hawaiian He was a natural-born musician of great talent; a composer of Hawaiian chants and meles, and a master of almost any musical instrument he ever touched. This gift seems to have been a liberal endowment of other members of his remarkable Arts & Crafts family. In 1863, he had married Julia Kapiolani, granddaughter of Kaumualii, King of Kauai, and widow of Chief Benjamin Namakeha. As a royal couple, they were childless. Exhibit & One of Kalalaua's first concerns was the establishment of a line of succession to the throne. He gathered more closely into his court those of his brothers and sisters who were still living, even though their diverse rearings had cast them into roles Demonstrations more like friends and acquaintances than blood kin. He appointed his brother, nineteen-year-old Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku, as heir apparent. He had been adopted by Princess Ruth. On April 10, 1877, twenty-two-year-old Prince Leleiohoku died of rheumatic fever. MONDAY-SATURDAY Thirty-six-year-old Lydia Kamakaeha-O-Kinau became Princess Liliuokalani. She had been given at birth to Chief APRIL 23-28, 1984 Paki and his wife Konia. She was appointed heir apparent after the death of Prince Leleiohoku. She was married to the Gov 9:00 5:00 ernor of O'ahu, John Owen Dominis, an American and they had a.m. - p.m. no children. She became Queen after her brother, King Kali'ikaua, died in San Francisco on January 20, 1891. NANILOA SURF The King's youngest sister, twenty-one-year-old Miriam Auhea was named Princess Likelike. A sister of exceptional HOTEL beauty, grew up in the Hilo area of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Her husband, Archibald Cleghorn was a Scot. Kilohana Room 1875 was a good year for King KaUikaua. The King's sister Princess Likelike gave birth to Princess Kaiulani on October 16. She was named heir apparent by Queen Liliuokalani in 1891. The beautiful Kaiulani was schooled in England. TWE~ DE ELORMENT April 30, 2018 ~,, C 2c Suzanne Case, Chairperson •-o Russell Tsuji, Land Administrator — Gordon C. Heit, Compliance Officer Members, Board of Land and Natural Resources ci’ 1151 Punchbowl Street Honolulu, Hawaii 96813 Mailing Address: DLNR Land Division Attn: Banyan Drive RFI 1151 Punchbowl Street Room 220 Honolulu, Hawaii 96813 Re: Banyan Drive Hotel Request for Interest - RFI No. BDH-1-FY18 (“RFI”) Aloha Madam Case and Messer’s Tsuji and Heit, and Board Members: Tower Development Inc. (“TDI”), the current lessee for the Uncle Billy’s property (“Uncle Billy’s”), is honored to submit this Response to the RFI. As you are aware, TDI has completed the redevelopment of the Grand Naniloa Hotel, a Doubletree by Hilton (“Grand Naniloa” or “Hilton”). TDI has used good faith for 9 months to save DLNR significant costs (likely over $100,000) in securing the Uncle Billy’s grounds from vandalism and negative impacts after its closure. TDI has the greatest interest in Banyan Drive and is committed to assist in the full redevelopment of Banyan Drive at the same standards as the Hilton. Thus, we are confident that TDI is the appropriate, and qualified Hawaii developer to complete the demolition, and re-construction of the site. Through its extensive 20-year Hawaii experience in development, demolition, environmental remediation, construction and financing, and 4-year development experience specifically on Banyan Drive, TDI is excited to continue the success with Uncle Billy’s redevelopment. For the last two (2) years, and also during the nine (9) months since TDI was issued the RP 5-7905 for Uncle Billy’s, we have been patiently planning for the redevelopment and have procured the most qualified team to complete the project for the benefit of DLNR and the County, State, Hilo and the surrounding community.
