Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay and was founded in 1779 by David BSimpson. As with most Islay distilleries, it is rumoured that whisky production took place on this site for many years before the ocial established date. Using a mixture of peated and unpeated barley gives Bowmore a more subtle smokey prole than some other whiskies from Islay and it is, therefore, more approachable and balanced. Bowmore is mostly matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks, giving the whisky a fresh avour prole; tasting notes include lemon zest, vanilla with a wisp of ashy smoke. Some of the spirit is matured in a variety of other casks, notably ex-sherry, port pipes and red wine, all of which work extremely well with the character of Bowmore’s new make spirit. D H Bowmore’s distillery started operation in 1779 by David Simpson and a licence was granted for whisky production in 1816. It did not gain traction or reputation until 1837 when the Glasgow blending rm, Wm & Jas. Mutter, took over. e peat which is burned to dry the barley at Bowmore is sourced from the island itself and inuences around 40% of the barley used, giving the whisky an individual and slightly lighter smokey prole. e whisky-making process at Bowmore has changed very little over the last 240 years, the same water source, the river Laggan, still supplies the 2 million litres of alcohol capacity of the distillery every year and the legendary No. 1 Vaults, the old stone warehouse that sits on the edge of Loch Indaal, are still used for whisky maturation even though they now sit below sea level. Over the next 150 years, Bowmore changed hands several times including a brief spell under the ownership of Distillers Company Limited, known today as Diageo. It was not until the latter half of the 20th century that the distillery was really on the map for producing quality aged single malts. In 1993 the rst Black Bowmore was released, a 29-year-old single malt which in today's market recently sold for over £4,000 per bottle. In 2014 Beam Suntory added Bowmore to their whisky portfolio which includes Laphroig and Jim Beam, thus Islay sees two of its most iconic single malts under the same ownership with a regular supply of quality 1779 casks from American. It has a long, rich history and can boast that it was the rst distillery on Islay to obtain legal status back in 1779, the same year it was established. is Islay distillery sits on the shore of Loch Indaal in the centre of the town of Bowmore, from which the distillery takes its name. Bowmore is also distinguished for producing the oldest ever Islay malt, a 1957 54-year-old bottle presented in a crystal decanter with a price tag of around £100,000. e distillery is proud to have won more awards than any other Scottish distillery since its inception, rmly cementing its place as a legend of Scotch whisky. Bowmore has changed hands a number of times in the 200+ years since it was founded. e current owner is drinks-giant Beam Suntory, who acquired 100% ownership in 1994 after an initial purchase of a 34% stake ve years earlier. On top of owning Bowmore, Suntory also owns Laphroaig, Ardmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch along with a number of American and Japanese brands. e distillery is one of the few that still has a working malting on-site, responsible for producing a large portion of the barley which goes into making its whisky. Style-wise, Bowmore is peated and lighter than many of the heavier Islay whiskies. Typical avours are light smoke, sherry sweetness and dried fruits but many older bottlings also contain oral notes, with their 1980s whisky in particular exhibiting distinct notes of violets. While these are the traditional avours of Bowmore, it's worth remembering that each and every single cask can be quite dierent from the others. Today, Bowmore’s Master Distiller and blender are Ron Welsh, who previously held the role of inventory manager and Head of Spirit Quality for Beam Suntory. Welsh, who takes over from whisky legend Rachel Barrie, has over 25 years experience in the industry and stated that he “Look(s) forward to developing and nurturing my talented team to bring new avour experiences to our customers.” Welsh has thus far got o to a great start - at the halfway mark of 2017, the distillery accounted for 4.47% of the overall Scotch market in terms of volume sold, the fourth most of any distillery and up one place from the nal gures of 2016.
