UNIVERSITY OF -MADISON | ATHLETIC FACILITIES MASTER47 PLAN 47 STADIUM GENERAL OVERVIEW & SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION Located on the southwestern edge of campus, Camp Randall Stadium has been the home of football since 1895, with a fully func oning stadium since 1917. With a sea ng capacity of 80,321, Camp Randall is the oldest and fi h largest stadium in the , 41st largest stadium in the world.

The stadium lies on the grounds of Camp Randall, a former Union Army training camp during the Civil War. The camp was named a er then Governor Alexander Randall, who later became Postmaster General of the .

The stadium also houses athle c offi ces of the University. In 2002, a large-scale reconstruc on project commenced, which added luxury boxes, a fi ve-story offi ce building, and separate football program offi ces. In addi on, concessions, restrooms and other infrastructure items were upgraded, the walkway around the fi eld was removed, and new scoreboards were installed. The construc on was completed prior to the start of the 2004 season. The football team con nued to play at the stadium throughout the construc on [1].

GOALS & OBJECTIVES • Integrate addi onal premium seat opportuni es such as Club Lounge and associated Club Seats, 4-6 per- son Loge Boxes, Outdoor Terraces, and Field Level Club

• Provide memorable game-day experiences that en ces the fan to arrive early and stay late

• Leverage the iconic nature of the Field House with synergies and connec ons

• Improve the west concourse experience with be er support services and greater opportuni es for reve- nue genera on

• Improve the character and quality of the exis ng Press Box

• Devise a plan to address the exis ng structural precast maintenance on the west sea ng bowl

MASTER PLAN DESIGN CONCEPT / RECOMMENDATIONS Provide new premium choices by renova ng the South Bleachers and Field House. This will allow new rev- enue genera on opportuni es in the near future while minimizing the capital investment on the West Cen- tral Sea ng Bowl. In the future, the West Central Sea ng Bowl concept could be integrated into the stadium UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON | ATHLETIC FACILITIES MASTER PLAN CAMP RANDALL STADIUM FACILITY ASSESSMENT

FACILITY ASSESSMENT A substan al amount of the stadium was remodeled between 2002 and 2008. Many parts of the stadium date back to the early 1900’s. The original structure is poured concrete with masonry. The north end is a steel frame with poured beams and sea ng. The 2004 structure is steel with precast building elements within the stadium footprint. The Stadium consists of the bowl and stadium specifi c func ons such as a press box, private and club boxes, concessions, toilets, dining, laundry, kitchen, etc. There are sport func- ons such as wrestling, training room, offi ces and auxiliary lockers. The stadium has two main mechanical rooms, fi re pump and generator room, mul ple telecom rooms and two main electrical rooms. Overall the facility, with the excep on of the west side, is in good condi on.

The main cost items are: Digital Direct Control and device control upgrades, west press box, roof replace- ments, west side structural repairs, bowl/concourse waterproofi ng, toilet room upgrades, future fi eld turf replacement and emergency ligh ng upgrades. A total of $18 million of repairs is iden fi ed in the report. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON | ATHLETIC FACILITIES MASTER49 PLAN 49 CAMP RANDALL STADIUM GAMEDAY OPERATIONS

OVERVIEW Game day events bring a large number of fans to the University of Wisconsin campus. Its of cri cal impor- tance the Athle c Department and the greater University manage these events for proper safety, effi cient opera ons, high quality and memorable experiences, and neighborhood rela onships.

Football game day is an exci ng event for both the University campus and the larger Wisconsin community bringing energy to the en re city of Madison. Effi cient vehicular and pedestrian traffi c pa erns are cri cal for a high quality event. The close proximity to the adjacent neighborhoods bring addi onal complexi es to manage. Moreover, to the east, both the McClain indoor facility and the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Facility limit free fl owing access. The east and west pinch points push primary access to the stadium to the north and south. The north, being the primary access from central campus is further confi ned by the close proximity of the Engineering campus. The shortage of parking has con nued to be an issue as the density of game day has increased. Access to parking for premium cket holders limits the marketability of this amenity.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS SHOULD INTEGRATE THE FOLLOWING:

• Improved Breese Terrace street on game-day conversion to pedestrian mall. Greater a en on to the sta- dium facade frontage to mi gate scale to the west neighborhood

• West main concourse accessibility, width, and adequate support services

• Plaza street/sidewalk experience along Li le and Monroe Streets (see Field House survey)

• Greater presence of Bucky’s Locker Room fron ng Monroe Street

• Increased perfora on for stadium entry along the east to minimize conges on along the north between Engineering and McClain

• Increased parking opportuni es for premium cket holders

• Mixed-use development opportuni es in the area to aid in pre and post game gatherings and minimized conges on

• Greater synergies between the Field House and Camp Randall

• Preserve and enhance the iconic historical nature of the Camp Randall green space and the Field House UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON | ATHLETIC FACILITIES MASTER PLAN CAMP RANDALL STADIUM SURVEYGAMEDAY OF OPERATIONSPRELIMINARY OPTIONS

When considering retaining the exis ng ver cal structure (highlighted in pink) of the stadium west sea ng bowl for a renova on, it has tremendous value. This structure however, becomes a large impediment to exist- ing concourse circula on (outlined in purple). By reconfi guring and moving the new concourse down to street level (outlined in yellow), concourse width, circula on, and accessibility are vastly improved.
