Anatomy of the Trachea and Bronchial Tree Anatomy of the Trachea and Bronchial Tree The trachea and bronchial tree form a systemLearning Points of airways that allow the passage of air to the lungs to take place in gas exchange. The trachea is about 10cm long and extends from the level of the 6th cervical vertebrae (at the cricoid cartilage) to the 4th thoracic vertebrae. It is an elastic structure held open by incomplete C-shaped cartilaginous tracheal rings joined p o s t e r i o r l y b y t h e trachealis muscle. The trachea divides into the right and left main bronchi at the carina which is at the level of the 5th thoracic vertebrae. The carina is the most sensitive area of the trachea for triggering the cough reflex. Larynx, Trachea and Bronchial Tree The right and left main bronchi differ from each other. The right is shorter (only 3cm in length before it gives off the bronchus to the right upper lobe), wider and more vertical. The left is longer (5cm), narrower and more horizontal. Bronchoscopy view of the carina This means that inhaled foreign bodies are more likely to enter the right main bronchus. It also means that it is easier to place a double lumen tube into the left main bronchus rather than the right where the upper lobe can easily be obstructed. The right and left main bronchi undergo further branching to produce secondary bronchi. Each secondary bronchi supplies a lobe of the lung. The right lung has 3 lobes and the left lung has 2 lobes. The lobar bronchi then give rise to several segmental bronchi each of which supplies a bronchopulmonary segment. Bronchopulmonary segments consist of numerous smaller airways, the bronchioles, which make up the functional units of the lungs. .

The length of trachea can be correctly gauzed by measuring the exact distance between lower border of cricoid cartilage and apex of the bifurcation angle (Perelman 1972). It varies with age (Allen, M S 2003). Langova (1946) measured the length of the trachea in 390 cadavers ranging in age from six months of intra-uterine life to twenty years and found that it was 3.1 cm on an average in the newborn, 6 cm in a five year old child, 7 cm at the age of ten and 8.5 cm at the age of 15 years. In adults the length of trachea varies widely from 8.5 to 15 cm. Tehmina Begum et al (2009) measured the length of trachea in adult males in the age range of 20 to 58 years. Department of Biological Sciences Northern Illinois University, 2015 Virginia L. Naples and Reed P. Scherer, Co-directors This research examines the evolution, phylogenetic distribution, and functional explanations for a peculiar and often overlooked character seen in birds, herein called tracheal and esophageal displacement. Of special interest to this study is examining whether the trait was present in non-avian theropod dinosaurs. This study found that essentially all birds are characterized by a laterally displaced trachea and/or esophagus. The displacement may occur gradually along the neck, or it may happen immediately upon exiting the oropharynx. Displacement of these organs is the result of a heavily modified neck wherein muscles that create mobility restrictions in lizards, alligators, and mammals (e.g., m. episternocleidomastoideus, m. omohyoideus, and m. sternohyoideus) no longer substantially restrict positions in birds. Rather, these muscles are modified, which may assist with making tracheal movements. An exceptionally well-preserved fossil theropod, Scipionyx samniticus, proved to be paramount.
