“This Is Boedo” Stories of a Lost Football Stadium, a Buenos Aires Barrio, and How the Hinchas of San Lorenzo Fought to Return “This is Boedo” Stories of a lost football stadium, a Buenos Aires barrio, and how the hinchas of San Lorenzo fought to return by Matthew Hawkins A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology Specialization in Political Economy Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2017 Matthew Hawkins Abstract Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro is one of Argentina’s largest professional football teams. In 1979, during Argentina’s civic-military dictatorship (1976-1983), the club was forced to close its stadium the Gasómetro located on Avenida La Plata in the Buenos Aires barrio (neighbourhood) of Boedo. The property became a Carrefour retail store in 1985. Clubs in Argentina are large member-operated social, culture, and sport institutions offering a wide range of activities alongside professional football. Clubs are often identified with their place in the urban landscape. The idealized club de barrio (neighbourhood club) of Buenos Aires, in particular, has had a profound social and cultural influence on the production of the barrio as a space in the city. In turn, the historic relationship between the barrio and the club generates a sense of belonging that hinchas feel towards their club’s barrio. San Lorenzo’s hinchas claim that through the loss of the old Gasómetro their connection to Boedo was unjustly severed. Over the past fifteen years a social movement organized by the club’s hinchas (supporters) called the Vuelta a Boedo (Return to Boedo) grew into a politically successful campaign to regain the property with the hope of one day building a new stadium. This dissertation examines how the Vuelta a Boedo generated a politicized narrative that draws from the history of the club, the performative solidarity of the football crowd, a politics of memory and justice, and the collective storytelling of hinchas of San Lorenzo. It argues that an intertextual reading of Argentina’s football crowds and the country’s political-economy more generally is required to understand how the Vuelta a Boedo emerges. Shared memories of the Gasómetro refract through the claims made by human rights organizations to articulate why the loss of the stadium should be perceived as a social injustice. This dissertation demonstrates how hinchas and their football clubs to contribute to the production of urban space. Finally, the dissertation argues for the centrality of the affective relationships between hinchas produced and mediated through their match-day performances. i Acknowledgements “Madmen open the paths which are later traversed by the wise.” - Carlo Dossi In an interview from 1999, Adolfo Res promised to the camera that with $30 million pesos he would buy the Carrefour on Avenida La Plata and rebuild the Gasómetro out of wood.     El aguante en una barra brava: apuntes para la construcción de su identidad1 Aguante in a barra brava – Some notes on building its own identity John Alexander Castro-Lozano2 Resumen Este trabajo es el resultado de la investigación realizada entre el segundo semestre de 2010 y el primero de 2012 con un grupo de hinchas organizados de Millonarios F.C., lo que comúnmente se conoce como barra brava. Aquí se presenta una revisión bibliográfica sobre la producción teórica en torno a grupos organizados de hinchas del fútbol. Asimismo, se explica cómo acercarse y estar presente con la barra. También se exponen los hallazgos obtenidos a través de la descripción y la participación, técnicas particulares de la etnografía. Finalmente, se reflexiona a partir delaguante , una noción propia del grupo seleccionado y la manera como éste se convierte en un elemento constructor de identidad. Abstract This paper presents the results of a research carried out between the second semester of 2010 and the first one of 2012 within a fan group of Millonarios FC, commonly known as “barra brava”. There is a literature review on theoretical issues about football fans. The paper also explains how to join and interact into a fans’ group. In addition, findings obtained by means of the description and involvement into the fans‘group, are presented through particular ethnography technique. Finally, some reflections are made about “aguante”, a concept built within the selected group and how this concept has become an element to build identity. I now believe we should stick to being a devolved government. I changed my mind on this based on that report I posted up the other week on how Scotland has had a very poor record in teaching children about the history of Scotland. As a result of that report I thought I should look more closely at the history of our relations with England and then went on to do further research on how Scottish the Scots actually are. For example, Scotland has seen migration and settlement of many peoples at different periods in its history. The Gaels, the Picts and the Britons have their respective origin myths, like most medieval European peoples. The Venerable Bede tells of the Scotti coming from Spain via Ireland and the Picts coming from Scythia. Germanic peoples, such as the Anglo-Saxons, arrived beginning in the 7th century, while the Norse invaded and colonized parts of Scotland from the 8th century onwards.

    Asian Journal of Latin American Studies (2016) Vol. 29 No. 4: 25-53 Insecurity and Fear of Crime in Argentina: Crime, Media, and Politics in Neoliberal Times Pedro Cerruti*1 University of Buenos Aires, Argentina Cerruti, Pedro (2016), “Insecurity and Fear of Crime in Argentina: Crime, Media, and Politics in Neoliberal Times” ABSTRACT The emergence of a punitive approach to social insecurity as a response to the new social question produced by neoliberalism has been described as a global trend. Furthermore, it is a trend that characterizes the increasingly polarized and exclusionist post-industrial societies. In this article, I present a study of the development of these transformations in Argentina, in particular the cultural processes involved in the social construction of “insecurity” as a public problem. Two moments in recent Argentine history are considered: first, the hyperinflationary crisis period of 1989-1990 in which insecurity first emerged as a form of representation of the social consequences of the economic crisis; and, second, Carlos Menem’s second presidency between 1995 and 1999, during which the terminal crisis of neoliberalism occurred and insecurity first appeared as one of the main concerns of the public and as a key issue in political disputes, becoming a priority on the government agenda. Focusing specifically on the political and mass media discourses through which crime and violence were thematized as social problems in the public sphere, this paper analyses the articulation of a discursive formation within which social conflicts caused by the crises of the neoliberal reform were formed as criminal problems that required policing and repressive approaches in order to control them.
