PROJECT NAME International Higher Education Collaboration on Upcycling of Industry Left-overs 2013 Environment Future: International Low Carbon Design Competition INTERPRETATION: The combination of flying diamonds stands for imagination of the design inspired by simple geometric pieces with colours. Small diamond pieces represent dynamic thoughts. They are interlaced with each other, implying that we should keep close communication as well as stay independent when working on design. However, all efforts aim to be contributed to future environment. 设计艺术学院 SCHOOL OF DESIGN HUNAN UNIVERSITY II. BACKGROUND 1. In the report presented on the 18th Session of Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, “economic sustainable development” and “ecological civilization” were both highlighted as the key national development programme. UK has been a world-leading pioneer of low-carbon economy thus has accumulated abundant experience and technologies of sustainable development and industrial design. Both countries reached consensus of collaborations which has led to productive outputs at all levels. 2. With China becoming the “Factory of the World”, the manufacturing enterprises in China are producing numerous industrial left-overs everyday, which have become one of the biggest sources for environmental pollution. Recycling them consumes more energy and results in second- time pollutions. Unlike recycling, “upcycling” reuses left-overs as raw materials without second-time chemical or physical processing such as melting, refining. Therefore, “upcycling” can both increase energy efficiency and add value to materials that can’t be recycled through traditional processing methods. 3. “Low Carbon Design” is the best way for upcycling through adopting innovative ideas. Beyond the millennium, the global low-carbon economy has achieved substantial growth through various ecological design competitions, experimental and commercial pilots which are based on 3R(Reduce, Reuse, Recycling) principles and the idea of sustainability. 4. Following the first “Sino-UK Higher Education Collaboration on Upcycling of Industry Left-overs” which successfully took place in 2012, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy will line up institutions in China and the UK to base such collaboration in Changsha, which is the capital city of Hunan Province and claims to be a core base of industrial design and manufacturing in China. 设计艺术学院 SCHOOL OF DESIGN HUNAN UNIVERSITY III.
