Gabrielli All rights reserved 2014 iii ABSTRACT SOLIDARITY MEDIATION IN THE FRENCH STREAM OF MYSTICAL BODY OF CHRIST THEOLOGY Name: Gabrielli, Timothy R. University of Dayton Advisor: William L. Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream. -

This active phase ot sturzo's career has been well documented and his name assured a permanent and honored place in the long history of his native country. But the fundamental character and depth of the social theory that also marks the achievement that was his life has not been adequately explored. It is the thesia of this work that the scope or Sturzo's theory embraced nothing less than an integral, concrete and coherent view or, being ~uman. -
Constitutionalizing Secularism, Alternative

A critical reading of some Turkish, ECtHR and Indian Supreme Court cases on ‘secularism’ Veit Bader* 1. Introduction Recently, the heated debates on secularism in social sciences, politics and, increasingly, in political theory and political philosophy have also infected legal theory, constitutional law and comparative constitutionalism. Generally speaking, it may indeed be ‘too late to ban the word “secular”’ or to remove ‘secularism’ from our cultural vocabulary. The argument, however, that ‘too many controversies have already been stated in these terms’1 seems unconvincing to me. For the purposes of normative theory generally, and particularly for those of constitutional law and jurisprudence, the focus of this article, I have proposed to replace all normative concepts of ‘secularism’ by ‘priority for liberal-democracy’2 because I am convinced that we are better able to economize our moral disagreements or to resolve the substantive constitutional, legal, jurisprudential and institutional issues and controversies by avoiding to restate them in terms of ‘secularism’ or ‘alternative secularisms’. Muray (Episcopalian) is professor of religious studies at the Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Graduate Theological School in Claremont, California. Several of his previous articles were published in OPREE. Little known in the West is the life and work of the Hungarian Ottokar Prohaszka (1858- 1927), Roman Catholic Bishop of Szekesfehervar and a university professor who was immensely popular and influential in Hungary at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. He was the symbol of modernism, for which three of his works were condemned, and Christian Socialism in his native land. -

The free exercise of religion, the Court has asserted, does not guarantee a person the right, based upon religious observance, to violate a law that is religiously neutral and of general applicability.' Rethinking Religious Minorities’ Political Power Hillel Y. Levin* This Article challenges the assumption that small religious groups enjoy little political power. Based on this assumption, the dominant view is that courts are indispensable for protecting religious minority groups from oppression by the majority. But this assumption fails to account for the many and varied ways in which the majoritarian branches have chosen to protect and accommodate even unpopular religious minority groups, as well as the courts’ failures to do so. The Article offers a public choice analysis to account for the surprising majoritarian reality of religious accommodationism. Further, it explores the important implications of this reality for deeply contested legal doctrines, as well as the insights it offers for recent and looming high- profile cases pitting state law against religious liberty. * Copyright © 2015 Hillel Y. BOOK REVIEWS HARPER'S BIBLE DICTIONARY. Edited by Paul J. Achtemeier. San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1985. Pp. xxii + 1178. $29.95. Publication projects that make the results of biblical research available to nonspecialists go in cycles. Several popular commentary series either have been recently completed or are nearing their end. One-volume commentaries on the entire Bible are now being organized. From various book advertisements and publishers' catalogues, it seems that in the meantime we can expect a new round of Bible dictionaries the like of which we have not seen since the 1960s. Harper's Bible Dictionary represents a co-operative venture between the Society of Biblical Literature and Harper & Row. It contains contri butions by 179 Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish members of the SBL on 3700 topics. The articles concern biblical persons and places, important theological terms, biblical books, major archeological sites, unusual words, the languages and history of biblical peoples, types of literature, economics, music, art, and sociology. Feature articles are devoted to Jerusalem, Jesus Christ, Paul, the Temple, and other topics. Photo graphs, maps, drawings, charts, tables, outlines, and pronunciation guides are provided. In this joint venture the SBL, in the person of its former executive secretary (Achtemeier) and his four associate editors (R. S. Boraas, M. Fishbane, P. Perkins, W. O. Walker), has assumed responsi bility for the content of the dictionary, while Harper & Row has handled matters of format and editorial style. Their goal was to produce "a highly readable, authoritative, and reliable summary of the best of contemporary knowledge about the Bible and the world from which it emerged" (xix). -
