However, despite the intense use of the entropy concept in urban sprawl, entropy’s spatial context has been largely ignored. In this study, we analyzed urban sprawl in Changwon and Gimhae cities, as they shared a common boundary but differed in their population growth and urban expansion. The land cover type, “urban and dry area,” was used to identify urban areas in the two cities, and a land cover map showed the areas of expansion in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. Different zoning schemes, namely concentric rings and regular partitioning, were applied. Shannon’s and Batty’s spatial entropy indices were used to measure urban sprawl. The results showed that concentric ring zoning was not suitable for measuring urban sprawl in a decentralized and polycentric city. Batty’s spatial entropy was less affected by the zoning scheme used and reflected the pattern of urban expansion more accurately. Urban sprawl, a phenomenon occurring within a spatial context, can be better understood by measuring spatial entropy with appropriate zoning schemes.

    The Hydrogen Economy South Korea Market Intelligence Report January 2021 Forewords South Korea is setting out its stall to be a global leader in the development of a hydrogen-based economy. The Korean government has committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and in July 2020, announced its Green New Deal, committing to £13bn fiscal investment by 2025 in green mobility. One of the key elements of that push is the development of hydrogen vehicles; South Korea hopes to produce 500,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for export and domestic consumption by 2030. As this report outlines, the hydrogen market in South Korea will almost double in size from £9.1bn in 2020 to £17.3bn by 2030, with the growth driven largely by investment from large local players such as Hyundai and Doosan. The UK is expected to announce its own Hydrogen Strategy in early 2021. But there is already a growing awareness in South Korea that the UK is a world leader in the fields of basic science, advanced materials and fuel cells. This offers huge opportunities for UK fuel cell and hydrogen companies with both public and private sectors investing heavily in the nascent hydrogen economy. We hope that this report, produced in partnership with Intralink, helps set out in more detail where these opportunities lie and the DIT team in Seoul stand ready to support UK companies looking to enter the South Korean hydrogen market. Swift Lingo 195 3 May 2011 The Grammar of Pitch in South Gyeongsang Korean Abstract Most Korean dialects are non-tonal, and one way of knowing that is that is to ask, say, a woman from Incheon about the tones of the word !" saram "person." She will not have any notion of them. However, her tonal indifference does not mean that she will always produce the same general F0 pattern for all sentences of a given structure, even if corresponding words in the different sentences have the same number of syllables, and even in an elicitation setting. Particular phonemes can cause a lot of variation. We see lexical tone in the Korean of #$ (Gyeongsang), a southeastern region of South Korea, and again, a persuasive diagnostic is just the fact that we can ask speakers about tone and see that they associate information with it. A Gyeongsang woman would tell us that the first syllable of saram has low tone and the second high tone. We expect more, though. We can, of course, find minimal pairs for tone, and other pairs close enough to definitively show contrast, which we would be unable to do in other regions. Yet resulting from environmentally conditioned variation, we do not always easily find any one pitch contour at the narrow phonetic level that is exclusively characteristic of a certain speaker-perceived tonal configuration. Can it be true that the phonetic behavior of tone is too elusive to be of any straightforward, independent worth in informing our idea of the phonology underlying it? Can tonal phonology only emerge through internal comparison within the morphological paradigm? If we had to define high tone phonetically, could we? Perhaps we could define it for a certain language, but not in general.
