The motion picture was “inspired”—the producer’s word, although it sits somewhat uncomfortably here—by the case of some young American Chassidim who were in fact recruited in the 1990s to carry illegal drugs overseas. The ideals and commitments of most frum Jews make them unlikely perpetrators of crimes like drug running. But, sadly, illegalities of many types, including that one, do exist in the Orthodox world. Not every Jew in the Orthodox communi- ty lives an Orthodox life. So it was probably inevitable that some enterprising screen- writer would come across the reports about Chassidim tragi- cally drawn into the easy money of drug smuggling and recog- nize an entertainment poten- tial. What a winning crazy-mix of imageries: the peaceful, devout world of Chassidim, and the violent, amoral one of organized crime. Peiyos and pay- offs, one might say. Amazing it took so long for someone to come up with the idea. Whether the resultant film is a work of art or an act of Jewploitation I leave to film crit- ics. But, reportedly, it portrays the Chassidic world in a generally positive, accurate light. The pro- tagonist, who is at first tricked into boarding planes with “medi- cine” for “rich people” and even- tually gets sucked into the abyss of the drug trade, brings great pain to his family, which is in turn portrayed sympathetically. Similarly portrayed, it is reported, are the beauty and wonder of a Shabbos, when observant Jews turn off the world and spend a full night and day in relaxation, prayer, and Torah study, floating on a tran- quil cloud of time with family and friends. That is apparently what enchanted Q-Tip. And oth- ers, too; the idea of a day without meetings, media, or mobile devices has attracted fans far and wide. A national effort to pro- mote the Sabbath has been made of late, and a recent book intend- ed for a general readership is ded- icated to singing the Sabbath’s praises. Maybe Q-Tip even read it. To be sure, there is much to be said for being disconnected and focused inward for a day each week. But then, all of a sudden and out of nowhere, everything went black. Someone was shooting at their school bus. Now, sitting opposite me just before Shavuos, the young Rabbi Sasonkin looked back and tried to recall aspects of what he has endured over these last 16 years. His friend Ari Halberstam was killed in the shooting on the bus that day. Another student, Levi Wilhelm, was hit in the stomach and survived. Sasonkin him- self was hit in back of the head and today does not recall much of what happened until the time he woke up five weeks after the shooting. There is still a bullet lodged in his head.

Moshe has many years of growth ahead of him, which also means constantly requiring new and updated prosthetic devices.

Just a few months ago Moshe Sasonkin was an ordinary baby. In many ways, he is still very much so today. What sets him apart from most other one-year- old children, however, is a virulent and untreatable infection that attacked his little body when he was only a few months old. Doctors were baffled, and some of the foremost pediatric experts were at a loss to chart a course of treat- ment. They believed that Moshe had a virus that caused clotting in his hands and feet. The lack of circulation was jeop- ardizing his little life. His father, Nachum, explains that in order to save the baby’s life, doctors had to amputate his two hands—one at the wrist and the other below the elbow. And they also removed his two feet, one below the knee and the other at the ankle. Of course there are no words to express what Nachum and his wife, Dina, have endured and the long road to rehabilita- tion they face in order to inject some con- ventionality into the life of a young child in a very unusual situation. Little Moshe has been in intensive rehab and physical therapy since shortly after the radical sur- gery. He spent the last several weeks in New Jersey, where his mother traveled to be with him every day. His father would go to visit every few days, balancing the need to be with his son and his obliga- tions and duties at Brach’s. “I can’t say enough or express my grat- itude adequately to Mr. Brach and his per- sonal care and involvement in this ordeal,” says Nachum. He says that he had no choice but to miss weeks and weeks of work, and still today, due to Moshe’s condition, needs to accompany him to doctors for treatment. “Not only did Mr. Brach insist on paying me in full every week during my absence,” he says, “but if I could not come in to work to pick up my pay, he always had someone deliver the money to my home in Brooklyn.” The shooting of the yeshiva students took place shortly after Purim. It was on Purim of that year that Dr. Baruch Goldstein went to the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron and acted on infor- mation that he believed was a local Palestinian plan to attack Jews on the Purim holiday. Goldstein—a physician who had treated many victims of Arab terror—took matters into his own hands and used his army-issued machine gun to shoot up the Arab section of the mosque at the site. Twenty-nine Arabs were killed before the mob there turned on Dr. Goldstein and killed him. The Brooklyn Bridge gunman, a livery cab driver in New York named Rashid Baz, claimed that the shooting of the yeshiva students on the bridge was his frustrated reaction to the Hebron shoot- ing. The judge and jury did not buy into the defense claims, and Baz was convict- ed of murder and all the related charges. Judge Harry Rothwax sentenced Baz to 141 years in prison without the possibil- ity of parole. That may be all fine and good as far as the workability of our justice system. But in the aftermath of this awful tragedy, it left the Halberstams without their son, a nearly crippled Mr. Sasonkin, and a seri-

Chaim, not being Israeli, adds a new dimension to the situation. He has a New York driver’s license, is not an Israeli, and yet is still our son and should be allowed to drive our family car. We called our insurance agent to find out how to regis- ter Chaim, and he told us that we should actually get him an Israeli license first. Apparently, since he is our son and comes to visit several times each year for an extended period of time, it is possible that the authorities could rule that he is obligated to get an Israeli license as a non-citizen. Getting the license requires that he get an eye test, submit a doctor’s certification that he is healthy enough to drive, take two driving lessons from a licensed instructor, and then pass a driving test. It will take a couple of weeks to do. Once he has his license, we will then register him with the tax authorities as an approved driver of our car. Conveniently, Israel offers something called youth insurance. In it, you register the car and the driver with the company, and they give you an hourly (or maybe daily) rate. When the driver is going to take the car, you call in and activate the insurance. Once he is finished with it, you call in and deactivate it. Since insur- ance for teens is so expensive here, this allows us to minimize the cost. With Chaya getting ready to take the driving test as well (it is a much longer process for her to get her license, with a requirement for nearly 30 private lessons with a driving instructor), this will come in very handy. Hopefully, having a couple of drivers who can run the occasional errand or carpool will be beneficial. We just hope that the process will be as easy in practice as it was in planning. We confirmed some of it at the Customs Authority this week. We originally went to their office to get a permit to buy a refrig- erator with aliyah tax credits. However, even though we were told that we had four years to use the refrigerator purchase rights, it turned out that it is only available for three years. So we will pay a few hun- dred shekels more than we originally planned to. What can you do? O

Chocolate is one of the most pop- ular and indulgent sweets around. Health nuts with a sweet tooth look for low-fat, healthy alternatives to decadent desserts. People want treats that are good for them, so that when they do indulge they feel better about it. Although chocolate can be heavy and rich, organic versions and dark chocolates can make you feel good about being bad. Dark chocolate that has a high cacao percentage is loaded with healthy antioxidants. The organic alterna- tives, such as organic chocolate syrup, are similar in taste to the regular version yet contain all-nat- ural ingredients. Since many of us want to eat chocolate anyway, it’s worthwhile to find the type that will add to our health rather than take from it. Coconut. Coconut flavors have taken off in the last year, mostly because manufacturers have fig- ured out a way to keep the fruit pure and natural while preserving its taste. Coconut water, milk, ice cream, and yogurt have become some of the most popular prod- ucts on the market. Even people who are not a fan of the texture and taste of shredded coconut products can enjoy coconut-fla- vored foods. Coconut milk adds creaminess and depth of flavor to many dishes and can be used as a healthier alternative to heavy cream in soups or added to cook- ing liquid when making rice. Coconut water is growing in pop- ularity as an alternative for car- bonated beverages that is more substantial than flavored waters. Gluten-free products. Products without gluten are not only for those dealing with sen- sitive wheat allergies. Many peo- ple find that they feel better when they abstain from eating wheat products. Gluten in pasta serves as a glue to hold the dough together. While it used to be very difficult to make pasta without gluten, many compa- nies have emerged with gluten- free products. This makes life much easier for parents of chil- 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES May 28, 2010 31 CHASSIDIC MASTERS Continued from Page 30 tic “G-dly soul” to the Al-mighty, but also to involve his ego-domi- nated “animal soul” in the fulfill- ment of the Divine will. This is achieved when a person under- stands that he should “love the L-rd your G-d…for He is your life” (Devarim 30:20). By recognizing that G-d is the source and sus- tainer of his very being, the very same ego which earlier craved the most material of pleasures is now drawn to attach itself to the Al-mighty, out of the realization that there is no possible greater fulfillment of self.

Rush And Return Thus the “wick” is both prison and liberator for the flame, both tether and lifeline. It holds the soul in its distinctive- ness from the Divine whole, in its apartness from its Creator. And yet it is this distinctiveness and apartness, this incarnation in a physical life, which allows us to connect to G-d in the deep- est and most meaningful way— by fulfilling His will. So when Divine command, physical body, and human life come together as oil, wick, and lamp, the result is a flame: a rela- tionship with G-d that is charac- terized by two conflicting drives, by a yearning to come close cou- pled with a commitment to draw back. The materiality of life evokes in the soul a desire to tear free of it and fuse with the Divine. But the closer the soul is drawn to G-d, all the more does it recognize that it can fulfill His will only as a distinct and physical being. So while the corporeality of the wick triggers the flame’s upward surge, the Divine will implicit in the oil sustains its commitment to exis- tence and life. Every mitzvah is oil for the soul: with every act that consti- tutes a fulfillment of the Divine will, our lives are rendered into burning lamps, alight with flames that vacillate from heaven to earth and back again and illumi- nate the world in the process. Therein lies the specialty of the mitzvah of kindling the lamps of the Menorah in the Holy Temple. Every mitzvah generates light—whether it involves giving a coin to charity, binding tefillin on our arms and heads, or eating matzah on Passover. But this mitzvah (and the related mitzvos of kindling the Shabbos and Chanukah lights) not only trans- form us into metaphorical lamps, but also assume the actual form of a physical lamp—physical oil, a physical wick, and a physical flame that produces light. The prestigious national rankings determined that, after averaging graduat- ing classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009, 56 percent of Touro University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine graduates were accepted into primary care residencies. The high percentage produced by Touro University counters the national trend, which indicates that the majority of medical students are choosing special- ty care residencies. The decline in med- ical students choosing a primary care career is posing a serious crisis for the health care system. The need for primary health care providers will be further exac- erbated as the nation transitions into a more inclusive health care system cou- pled with the dramatic rise in aging “baby boomers.” A survey of medical students conduct- ed in 2008 by a professor at the University of California at San Francisco showed that only two percent of medical students planned to go into primary care. In a similar survey conducted in 1990 showed that nine percent were going into primary care. Dean of Touro’s College of Osteopathic Medicine Michael Clearfield, DO, said he was proud that from its inception Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine has consistently outperformed the national average in producing high quality primary care providers. Provost and chief operating officer Marilyn Hopkins added that Touro University’s emphasis on primary care providers was a reflection of the universi- ty’s commitment to public service. “Touro’s mission is anchored in service to humanity,” said Dr. Hopkins. “Our focus on producing substantial numbers of graduates who choose to dedicate them- selves to family practice and other pri- mary care specialties is a service to the nation.” Touro College Of Pharmacy Presents Panel Discussion, “A Community Conversation On HIV/AIDS.” Residents of Harlem attended this panel discussion at the Touro College of Pharmacy on May 6.

Senator Kruger expressed his strong support to the delegation, and was fol- lowed by Diane Savino, Eric Adams, and Eric Schneiderman. The delegation thanked Senator Schneiderman and his staff for organizing the meeting with the Senators. A day earlier, a smaller Agudath Israel delegation met with Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson, Assemblyman Dov Hikind, and Sampson’s chief of staff, Michael Cohen, at Senator Sampson’s request. The senator, in advance of the following day’s mission, wanted to convey his personal commitment to protect against the proposed cuts and restore the full funding of CAP. The delegates then went to the other side of the aisle where they consulted with Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos and Brooklyn Senator Martin Golden. At that meeting Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetsky of Yeshiva of South Shore, a long- time friend of Senator Skelos, requested that the Republican conference hold strong and resist any cuts to the CAP. The delegates then met with Governor David Paterson and his senior staff, and discussed the issue directly with him. Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a long time friend of the Governor, opened the meeting, requesting that the Governor reconsider his drastic planned cut. Agudah askan Chaskel Bennett, speaking as a parent, passionately addressed the “difficulties par- ents were having in meeting their tuition obligations” and implored the Governor to “con- sider the great hardships parents are going through.” While the Governor—who is known as a friend of the nonpublic-school communi- ty—did not commit to rescind- ing the proposed CAP budget cuts, he said he would revisit the issue and hoped that he would find a way to maintain the higher funding level he had initially proposed. “It was essential that we trav- eled to Albany to deliver our message personally,” said Rabbi Lefkowitz. “It’s a lot harder for our elected officials to ignore our legitimate claim when we present it to them face-to-face. “What was particularly impressive about the delegation was its breadth. This was not just one yeshiva making a pitch; it was representative of the entire yeshiva community.” Rabbi Lefkowitz then thanked Assemblyman Dov Hikind and

The United States Supreme Court will be hearing an appeal of a U. S. Court of Appeals decision that declared an Arizona school choice pro- gram unconstitutional. Agudath Israel of America welcomed the news. The Supreme Court declared in 2002 that school voucher programs are consti- tutional, and a number of states and localities have instituted such programs, providing qualifying parents with gov- ernment vouchers to use for their chil- dren’s education. Another popular way of helping encourage school choice has been the enactment in several states of tax credit programs, which permit tax- payers to receive a tax credit for funds they donate to organizations that fur- nish scholarships to needy students. One such initiative, the Arizona School Tuition Organization Tax Credit Program, was challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union and ruled unconstitutional by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Jewish Federation in Phoenix has established a Day School Scholarship Fund to which contributing corporations receive tax credits under Arizona’s pro- gram. The program has provided scholar- ship money to hundreds of students attending one of the seven Jewish schools in the Greater Phoenix area. Agudath Israel has long been a strong supporter of school choice. Its attorneys have filed numerous “friend of the court” briefs in support of choice programs— including in the case where the Supreme Court ruled on the constitutionality of school vouchers. Says Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, the organization’s executive vice president and author of several briefs on the sub- ject, “We are hopeful that the highest court in the land will once again affirm the rights of parents to decide where their children are educated, and we intend to present our views to the Justices for their consideration.” O 44 May 28, 2010 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES

Agudath Israel notes further that “similar presumptions about other eth- nic and faith groups across the state would be equally false. The plain truth is that many people, for religious or other reasons, would not want all of their organs automatically harvested. To presume consent where there is no consent is to make a mockery of these people’s rights.” Current law requires deference to a deceased individual’s personal and reli- gious views before any steps can be taken to remove organs for transplant purpos- es. And it actively prohibits organ removal for transplant purposes where there is any reason to believe the deceased individual would not have wanted it. Proposals currently before the New York legislature, however, seek to change that. One bill would eliminate the right to object to organ donation even when there is a reason to believe that the indi- vidual would not have wanted it. Another would presume that a New Yorker apply- ing for a driver’s license would want his or her organs harvested and donated unless he or she “opted out” of organ donation in writing. “Presumed consent,” says Agudath Israel associate general counsel Rabbi Mordechai Biser, “would effectively abandon the entire concept of person- al autonomy—the principle underly- ing all statutory and common law regarding health care proxies, living wills, and the like.” The principle, he continues, “that indi- viduals have the right to direct what should happen to their own bodies after death would be replaced with the assumption that the state has the right to use a person’s body as it wishes unless the person actively protested such use during his or her lifetime. “To put it simply: A person’s body should not belong to the state to use as it 50 May 28, 2010 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES sees fit simply because he neglected to port Ohel’s children and enjoy the day insist otherwise when alive.” golfing,” says Ohel board member Marc The Agudath Israel memorandum Herskowitz, president and CEO of urges the legislature to “search for other Infinity Land Title Services LLC, which ways of increasing organ donation with- has generously donated the valuable out trampling on the personal autono- golf stand bag giveaway. my and religious liberties of countless Golf Classic proceeds will benefit the New Yorkers.” O thousands of children and families served by Ohel Children and Family Heart To Heart: SKA Opens Theirs! Achdus Abounds At Project Inspire’s Inaugural Convention By Eileen Fine Project Inspire’s inaugural convention, held over the weekend of Shabbos Parashas Bechukosai, May 7–9, at the Stamford Plaza Hotel, was a prelude to Shavuos—k’ish echad b’lev echad—a taste of Jewish unity. Founded just four years ago, Project Inspire’s mission is simple, yet sweeping and majestic in scope: The unification of the Jewish People by providing easy and inspiring ways to share the beauty and wisdom of our heritage with our fellow Jews. They hoped that 250 would attend this first-time event. Nearly 800 came and hundreds more were turned away when a full house closed out registration two weeks prior to the convention. The response was overwhelming and gratifying for Rabbi Chaim Sampson, direc- tor of Project Inspire, Rabbi Mordechai Tropp, director of programming, and all of the Project Inspire staff. Together, they labor tirelessly to reach the 500,000 Orthodox Jews in North America with the message that they can and must reach out to their assimilated brethren. The founda- tion—love of G-d, Torah, and our brethren. The practical reality—1,500 kiruv “profes- sionals” in North America cannot possibly reach the estimated 5 million Jews who have assimilated without ever knowing the wisdom and pleasantness of a Torah 56 May 28, 2010 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES life. Individuals were the heartbeat of the convention as they are for Project Inspire’s very mission. Accounts of “lay” kiruv activists reaching out in simplicity and caring were woven throughout. The array of quiet individual efforts and com- munal initiatives to reach out and touch family members, neighbors, co-workers, and others was sweeping and inspiring. *A cyclist sporting a ponytail has a pleasant conversation with a bearded Belzer chasid after asking for directions and now comes for Shabbos seudos, is learning weekly with him, observing kashrus, davening in shul on Shabbos, and hoping to go on an Aish HaTorah trip to Israel. *An assimilated family offers their phone to a young girl lost in the woods, is touched by the grateful mother’s honey gift and Shabbos invitation, goes on to keep kashrus, and is now being mekarev others. *A nervous professional finds the courage to give each of her Jewish co- workers a small gift for an upcoming yom tov and finds one after the other touched and deeply appreciative. *A young man browsing in a Jewish bookstore notices three less connected Jews shopping, within a span of just one hour. When these “trench legal warfare” situ- ations present themselves, an attorney must prepare himself for the daunting task at hand and garner every advantage under the law for his legal arsenal so that the client is represented to the fullest. This is where the necessity for explorato- ry, surveillance, and data collection and analysis services become crucial, and this is why I am often contacted by attorneys as well as unrepresented individuals, including suspicious spouses, landlords, a decedent’s next of kin, business owners, and organizational directors. While there is a school of thought that for serious investigative needs a private investigator or even a large detective agency is required, there are many occa- sions when an attorney who specializes in the thorough exploration (including sur- veillance) and collection of data from a diverse range of sources (including the Internet, private interviews, covert surveil- lance, and cultivated relationships in law- enforcement and local, state, and federal agencies) can provide more effective, cost- efficient, and legally relevant services. The key to the role of the attorney in this regard is that he can oftentimes more skillfully analyze and interpret the data collected, and even focus the search for such information more keenly. The attor- ney understands what is necessary to learn and ascertain from a purely legal standpoint, and not be bogged down in information that, while possibly titillat- ing and fascinating, is irrelevant to the matter at hand. This seriousness and sharpness of scope allows the attorney-practitioner in this area to become a valued asset to other attorneys who are seeking a profes- sional, thorough, focused, and economi- cal professional who will both listen to the legal goals of the attorney/client while offering some of his own unique perspective on the matter. In my own traditional law practice, I routinely provide clients with such diverse and basic services as representation in res- idential and commercial real-estate trans- actions, estate planning (including drafting trusts and wills), Surrogate’s Court practice (including probate and administration pro- 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES May 28, 2010 73 Israel Chided For Arrest Of Alleged Hezbollah Spy

We will all rise and defend our present and our future and our chil- dren’s.” According to Aharonovitch “most of the investigation was carried out in the dark and cannot be detailed, but the affair is far from over.” O

Exports from Israel not only remain stable, but they have actually grown exponentially. In fact—hold on to your yarmulkes—Israeli exports have grown from $6 million in 1948 to a total of $67.5 billion in 2009. In the last twelve years, exports have doubled, with an increase of $5 billion in the last year alone. The Export Institute of Israel has noted that while the United States and Europe were historically the main addresses for Israeli exports, in 2009 exports to the and Asia have claimed a substantial por- tion of all Israeli exports. What we export has changed as well. While our exports had mostly been agri- cultural in nature, they later expanded to include the bling variety—i.e., diamonds. Israel now mainly exports knowledge- based items. High-tech sales account for 40 percent of our exports today. With the increasing capabilities of technology, more and more people are able to telecommute with Europe, the United States, and Asia. More people who are liv- ing on high income levels abroad are able to realize their dream of living in Jerusalem while maintaining their income levels and lifestyle. This is clearly good for the economy. Another reason the economy is steady in Israel is that Israel is one of the few countries in the developed world where the population is growing, not merely aging and declining. This is due to our average birth rate of 2.8 percent. This is all well and good, but I think that Israel owes its economic stability to the personality of your standard Israeli. Maybe it’s because Israel had the need to build itself up quickly; maybe it’s due to Israel’s constant need to defend itself. Whatever the reasons, many Israelis share common personali- ty traits. They are quick decision mak- ers. The word “impossible” doesn’t have a place in their vocabulary. Israelis are risk takers, and are tenacious when they want to get a job done. And they don’t take no for an answer. At the same time, Israelis have what might be considered quirky character traits—they say exactly what they think and are never shy about asking what 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES May 28, 2010 77 hand-made by my kallah’s best friend,” wife during their marriage and in the he said. eventuality of death or divorce.” He Shoe Business Rabbi Tzedek examined the kesubah to reviewed with them the various obliga- make sure that it was written properly. tions, and translated the relevant text. Shortly afterward, Grandma Epstein called again. “Traffic is moving again slowly. We’re almost past the accident and should arrive in about half an hour.” At last Zayde and Grandma arrived. After hugs and kisses all around and a few quick photos, the families organized for the chupah. It was already night before Eli finally gave the ring to his kallah. “The chasan’s grandfather, Zayde Epstein, is invited to read the kesubah,” announced Rabbi Tzedek. Zayde Epstein stepped forward and began reading in a voice filled with joy: “On Sunday, the 24th of Sivan . . .” A look of concern came over his face as he read the date. After the chupah, he approached Rabbi Tzedek. “Excuse me for asking,” he said, “but I noticed that the date of the kesubah was left as Sunday, even though the chupah did not take place until nighttime. Does that not invalidate the kesubah?” “You’re correct that a pre-dated kesub- ah is invalid,” answered Rabbi Tzedek. “However, since your grandson made a kinyan sudar while it was still day, the kesubah is valid.” NNN Rabbi Tzedek explained: “A kesubah that is dated early is invalid, like any other pre-dated debt document, and a new one has to be written (C.M. 43:7). However, the chasan obligates himself from the time he makes the kinyan sudar. Therefore, if the kinyan sudar and the sig- natures were done in the afternoon, that date remains correct, even though the chupah did not take place until evening (ibid. 39:13). Mazel Tov!” O
