Parish Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8:30 AM—7:00 PM Thursday 8:30 AM—4:00 PM Saturday 8:30 AM—Noon Friday 8:30 AM—3:00 PM Sunday 9:00 AM—12:30 PM (In Narthex) THIS WEEK IN THE RCIA “MARY & THE SAINTS” AND “WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?”

Our RCIA group will spend this Wednesday evening talking about Catholic devotions and practices. Specifically, our instruction for the evening will revolve around Mary and the Saints, but we will discuss a wide variety of “things Catho- lic.” Our seekers have been challenged to observe the Catholic people around them and surface questions focusing on “Why do Catholics do that?”

Our look into the place of honor that Mary holds in our faith tradition will include teachings of the Church about Mary and her role as the Mother of God and the perfect model for our faith lives. The Second Vatican Council reminds us that Mary is a member of the Church who “occupies a place in the Church which is the highest after Christ and also closest to us” (Lumen Gentium, no. 56)

We will also explore the role of the Saints in our prayer life and faith tradition. Part of our discussion will include a defi- nition of “saint” that includes the entire communion of saints – those in heaven, and those still roaming the face of the earth!

Did you know? Last Sunday, enrolled five new individuals into the canon of the saints:  Salomone Leclercq (born: Guillaume-Nicolas-Louis Leclercq), a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, who was martyred during the French Revolution.  Manuel González García was Bishop of Palencia, , from 1935 until his death. He was the founder of the Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth and also established both the Disciples of Saint John and the Chil- dren of Reparation. He was known for his strong devotion to the Eucharist and became known as the “Bishop of the Tabernacle.”  Lodovico Pavoni was a Roman Catholic priest from the northern Italian city of , located in the region of Lombardy. In 1825 he founded the Congregation of the Sons of Mary Immaculate, a congregation dedi- cated to forming and educating young men, which later expanded to serve the deaf and blind.  Alfonso Maria Fusco (March 23, 1839 – February 6, 1910) was an Italian priest and founder of the Sisters of Saint John the Baptist.  Elizabeth of the Trinity (born: Elizabeth Catez) was a French professed nun of the Order of Discalced Car- melites, a mystic and spiritual writer, and has been described as the “sister in the Spirit” of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

The RCIA team invites all our parishioners and guests to pray for our seekers, our catechists, and all those who are seek- ing to better understand their relationship with God.

Proclaiming the Word LECTOR TRAINING Sponsored by Vicariate 1, Deanery ABC Ministry Commission Saturday, November 5, 2016 8:30 a.m. registration; 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon workshop St. Joseph Formation Center, 112 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville

Lectors have a critical role in the celebration of the Mass. Because lectors proclaim not just any word, but the word of God, it is essential that they develop the skills required to communicate God’s message competently. Through the use of voice, eye contact and personal presence lectors help God’s Word come alive for the assembly. This training will provide the skills and self-confidence needed for those who wish to become lectors in their own parish or for those lectors who would like a “refresher course”. Open to adults and high school students. The presenter is Maureen Evers, our Pastoral Associate here at St. Mary of Vernon. To register contact Sue Matousek at 847-223-0010 or email [email protected]. The Formation Center is in the strip mall south of St. Joseph Parish. Parking and entrance is in the rear of the building.

The Knights of Columbus invite you to a free screening of an important documentary called the 40 film. 40 is an inspirational movie that examines the effects of abortion on our nation over the 40 years since Roe vs. Wade. The film presents abortion as the most important human and civil rights issue of our time. 40 gives voice to both sides fairly, and lets women speak for themselves through experience on the reasons for their firm convictions about abortion. It also reports on the youth at the annual March for Life as the generation that will end abortion. We have invited other parishes in the area to join us join us for this very informative event. Light refreshments will be served.
