Level of Description: item Administrative/Biographical History: John Struthers (1823-1899) was born in Dunfermline, the second of three brothers, all of whom entered the medical profession. He took up surgery and was appointed to the Royal Infirmary following graduation. After a few years he abandoned surgery in favour of anatomy and was in time appointed Professor of Anatomy at Aberdeen. He held this post for 26 years, during which time he reorganised the whole teaching of anatomy and created an excellent museum of anatomy. After retiring from his Chair in Aberdeen he returned to Edinburgh where he devoted his energies to the Royal College of Surgeons. He was President from 1895 to 1897 and was knighted in 1898. In 1899 the Struthers Lecture was inaugurated and was given every third year until 1974. His son, John William Struthers M.D., LL.D. GENIUS, WOMANHOOD AND THE STATISTICAL IMAGINARY: 1890s HEREDITY THEORY IN THE BRITISH SOCIAL NOVEL by ZOE GRAY BEAVIS B.A. Hons., La Trobe University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2014 © Zoe Gray Beavis, 2014 Abstract The central argument of this thesis is that several tropes or motifs exist in social novels of the 1890s which connect them with each other in a genre, and which indicate a significant literary preoccupation with contemporary heredity theory. These tropes include sibling and twin comparison stories, the woman musician’s conflict between professionalism and domesticity, and speculation about biparental inheritance. The particulars of heredity theory with which these novels engage are consistent with the writings of Francis Galton, specifically on hereditary genius and regression theory, sibling and twin biometry, and theoretical population studies. Concurrent with the curiosity of novelists about science, was the anxiety of scientists about discursive linguistic sharing. In the thesis, I illuminate moments when science writers (Galton, August Weismann, William Bates, and Karl Pearson) acknowledged the literary process and the reading audience. I have structured the thesis around the chronological appearance of heredity themes in 1890s social novels, because I am arguing for the existence of a broader cultural curiosity about heredity themes, irrespective of authors’ primary engagement with scientific texts. Finally, I introduce the statistical imaginary as a framework for understanding human difference through populations and time, as evidenced by the construction of theoretical population samples – communities, crowds, and peer groups – in 1890s social fictions. -

It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

Joseph Hooker first learned that Charles Darwin believed in the transmuta- tion of species in 1844. For the next 14 years, Hooker remained a "nonconsenter" to Darwin's views, resolving to keep the question of species origin "subservient to Botany instead of Botany to it, as must be the true relation." Hooker placed particular emphasis on the need for any theory of species origin to support the broad taxonomic delimitation of species, a highly contentious issue. -

Medical History, 1985, 29: 401-413 JOHN GRIEVE'S CORRESPONDENCE WITH JOSEPH BLACK AND SOME CONTEMPORANEOUS RUSSO-SCOTTISH MEDICAL INTERCOMMUNICATION by JOHN H. APPLEBY* On 28 January 1783, Joseph Black, professor of medicine and chemistry at Edinburgh Univeristy, and William Robertson, its principal, were elected honorary foreign members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In May of that year, John Grieve, a Scottish doctor returning to Britain from service with the Russian army, wrote from Riga, as "a scholar to his old master", to inform Black of arrangements for delivering the Academy's diploma, which he conveyed as far as London.' To understand the context of their subsequent correspondence and the development of Russo-Scottish medical intercommunication, a brief outline of relevant contacts between the two countries is necessary. In July 1762, a revolution occurred in Russia: Peter III, the feeble-minded tsar, was murdered at the instigation of his wife Catherine, who succeeded to the throne. Scottish doctors, through introductions and family connexions, had made their presence strongly felt in Russian medical life. One of them, James Mounsey, the late tsar's senior physician and director ofthe country's entire medical services, prudently chose to retire to Scotland at this juncture, on health grounds. Evidently, the situation had soon stabilized, for in September 1766, John Rogerson, whose mother was Mounsey's half-sister, arrived in Russia recommended by Mounsey. Licensed to practise, Rogerson was appointed court physician in 1769. In the next year, John Robison, relinquishing his lectureship in chemistry at Glasgow University, accompanied Admiral Sir Charles Knowles to Russia, to take up a post at the Imperial Sea Cadet Corps of Nobles-possibly escorted by another Scottish doctor, Matthew Guthrie, who was returning to St Petersburg with an MD diploma from St Andrews University. -

THE LIFE AND TEACHING OF WILLIAM SHARPEY (1802-1880) 'FATHER OF MODERN PHYSIOLOGY' IN BRITAIN by D. W. TAYLOR PART I I. INTRODUCTION THE TITLE-PHRASE was used by E. A. Schifer,1 one of Sharpey's latest and most distinguished pupils, who throughout his life acknowledged his debt to his old teacher and who eventually added the name of Sharpey to his own.2 Such a phrase may be historically suspect but it represents an opinion subscribed to by many others, not only his pupils and colleagues. Burdon Sanderson, who succeeded him, wrote: 'If I, or any of the men I have mentioned, were asked to what circumstances the un- questionable productiveness of the University College School in scientific men is due, all would I think unhesitatingly attribute it to the influence of one man, Dr. Sharpey.'3 Much later, A. V. Hill said of him: 'by Sharpey's example, other medical schools were encouraged to start proper laboratories and adequate instruction in Physiology . to his fine judgement of men and to his power of inspiring them to original work, the present high position of British Physiology is due . .'.4 The British Medical Journal in its obituary notice, stated that 'for years he was the greatest teacher of anatomy and physiology in the country, occupying a position here equal to that held by Johannes Miiller in Germany.'" In his History of the Physiological Society, Schiifer (by then, Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer) wrote that during a period when other experimental sciences were rapidly progressing, Physiology in this country could show no names worthy to be mentioned with those of Magendie, Bernard, MUller, Helmholtz or Ludwig... -

This new perspective challenges several popular views about the history of evolutionary thought by claiming that many earlier authors made history come out right for the Evolutionary Synthesis. The book starts with a revised history of nineteenth-century evolutionary thought. It then investigates how development became irrelevant to evolution with the Evolutionary Synthesis. It concludes with an examination of the contrasts that persist between mainstream evolutionary theory and evo–devo. This book will appeal to students and professionals in the philosophy of science, and the philosophy and history of biology.
