The masterclass

The course is aimed at students of all ages and levels, and is open to both individual participants and already formed groups (duo with piano, saxophone quartet). The content of the course will be very open and varied, depending on the needs of the participants. The course will focus on the general approach, emission and technique of the instrument, as well as the interpretation and stylistic aspects of the pieces prepared by the course students. Particular attention will be paid to the organisation and planning of each student's study, with suggestions aimed at achieving the most uniform and constant growth over the years.

He graduated at the age of 16 in saxophone from the "G.Rossini" Conservatory in Pesaro with top marks and honours. Later, at the age of 19, he obtained a diploma in Clarinet. He won 12 first prizes in Duo with piano in the most important national and international competitions. As a soloist, at only 14 years of age, he won the 1st prize at the 2nd International Competition of Musical Execution for wind instruments "Premio Ancona" (President of the jury Goffredo Petrassi), while with the group Baires '87 he won the "G.Tani" prize for arts and music in 1992. He has collaborated with the most important symphony and opera orchestras including: Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Filarmonica del Teatro alla Scala, Opera of Rome, Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, RAI in , Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Ente lirico Arena di Verona, Teatro lirico di Cagliari, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Qatar Philarmonic Orchestra, Swiss Radio and Television. He has performed as soloist with the Philarmonia Veneta orchestra, the Orchestra Regionale del Lazio, the Orchestra città di Ferrara, the Arts Simphony ensemble of Barcelona, the wind orchestra of the Spilimbergo Festival, the chamber orchestra of the 1st European saxophone festival in Ciudad Real. He has made recordings for the Emi, Delos, Warner Bros, Primrose Music, Decca, Stradivarius and Pentaphon labels. As a member of the Italian Saxophone Quartet for over 25 years and of the duo with pianist Giorgio Farina, he has performed in most of Europe, the United States, the Middle East, Japan and China, playing in the most important concert halls. He has participated in the World Saxophone Congresses held in Pesaro, Valencia and Ljubljana, and in 2014 he was invited as a soloist to the first European Saxophone Congress held in Spain. He has held Master classes and advanced courses in Portogruaro, Spilimbergo, Fermo, at the Hochschule in Frankfurt, at the Conservatories of Granada, Valencia , Jaèn, Cordoba, Madrid, at the University of Iasi (Romania), at the Conservatory of Birmingham and at the University of Denver (Colorado). Winner of a ministerial competition, he teaches saxophone at the "G.Frescobaldi" Conservatory of Music in Ferrara.

Accompanist: Filippo Farinelli

Pianist and eclectic musician mainly specialised in chamber music and lieder repertoire. He has founded several chamber music ensembles, among which the Duo Disecheis, dedicated to the interpretation of historical and contemporary repertoire for saxophone and piano, the Duo Komma, which promotes record projects and musicological research for the rediscovery of the Italian late-19th century and contemporary repertoire, the Quartetto Rêves, specializing in the French repertoire of the late 19th and 20th century, proposed in performances with a modular character. In duo with mezzo-soprano Elisabetta Lombardi, he has recently set up the Voice & Piano Project, which aims to give shape to a decades-long collaboration that can give voice to a vast repertoire ranging from Haydn to Barber, including Respighi, Schumann and various other composers, in interactive performances through the projection of texts and images in real time. He has been awarded prizes in numerous international chamber music competitions including: "Provincia di Caltanissetta" (2003), "Città di Trapani" (2004) and Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Amsterdam

He has collaborated with musicians such as: Alda Caiello, Monica Piccinini, Sophie Marilley, Mark Milhofer, Christian Immler, Roberto Abbondanza, Federico Mondelci, Mario Caroli, Patrick De Ritis, Simone Simonelli, Ivo Nilsson, Jonathan Williams, Melissa Phelps, Elisabeth Perry. He has played for institutions such as: Amici della Musica of Perugia, Modena, Foggia and Catanzaro, for Associazione Filarmonica di Terni, for the Ljubljana Festival, for the MusicaRivaFestival, for the Festival "da Bach a Bartòk" of Imola, for the Festival delle Nazioni of Città di Castello, for the Festival Automne Musical of Chatellerault, for the Sagra Musicale Umbra. He has recorded for Brilliant Classics (Holland), Tactus (Bologna) and other labels. He teaches at Italian conservatories.

The course Attendance fee as an active student is €200 for single applicants and €125 each for groups (respectively €175 and 100 with early bird registration); free access for auditors. The cost includes tuition and the opportunity to attend all lectures and/or seminars held during the course. Lessons start on 02/07/2021 and end on 04/07/2021 (total no. 3 days). Lesson schedules will be communicated at the beginning of the course; study spaces will be available and will be self-managed by the students; the use of the main rooms for rehearsals and study will be coordinated with the ongoing activities. At the end of the experience, certificates of participation authenticated by the teacher and the organisation will be handed out. The course will be held in English and/or Italian.

Concerts Participation in the course includes a performance at the end of the masterclass (at the teacher's discretion) with a concert as part of the Foresty International Music Festival; a teacher's concert is also planned.

Room and Board Casa San Michele offers an accommodation service at the course venue with half board at a cost of €60 per day (total of 3 days). If necessary, the facility is available to those who wish to stay the night before or after the beginning and the end of the course (upon reservation) at an additional cost of €40 per night. The cost of half-board includes accommodation in a double or triple room with private bathroom, breakfast and dinner; meals will be served in the dining room or outdoors, please indicate on the registration form any food allergies. Fresh water is always available in the common area; other drinks will be considered extra. The lunch break is at leisure: two affiliated restaurants and a grocery shop are within easy walking distance, so you can choose from sandwiches to traditional Italian cuisine. The cost of lunch is not included in half-board. The room is equipped with towels and sheets; use of the SPA is also included, limited to the times agreed on the course and in accordance with current regulations. Rubber slippers (anti-slip) and a swimming costume are compulsory for use of the SPA. The balance of any extras can also be paid on the spot by credit or debit card, bank transfer or PayPal. Please note that in the village of Montaldeo there are no tobacconists, pharmacies or ATMs; all the necessary services can be easily reached by car in the surrounding villages.

How to reach us The nearest railway stations are , , ; a transfer service is available from the arrival station to Montaldeo at a cost of €15 round. The nearest airports are Turin, Milan, Genoa, with respective train connections. For those travelling by car, Google Maps shows the exact location by searching for "Casa San Michele Montaldeo"; the nearest motorway exits are Ovada (A26), Novi Ligure (A26), Arquata Scrivia (A7).

You will then receive an email with a recap of the data and details of the payment, which must be made by bank transfer. Within a week of receiving the email you will have to pay the first installment (€100 both for groups and single applicants); the deadline for registration is May 31st 2021. The payment of the first installment confirms the registration to the course. The second installment (€100 for singles and €25 for groups) can be paid by June 14th. You can choose whether to pay the whole accommodation together with the second installment, or pay 50% of the accommodation with the second installment and pay the remaining 50% on arrival. Accommodation costs are €60 per day for the days of the course (total €180), €40 for each additional night before or after the course. In the event of a large number of applications, candidates will be selected in chronological order of registration (payment of the first installment).

Early Bird Registration For those who send in their registration form by 14 May 2021, the price of the first installment is reduced to €75 (to be paid by 21 May).

Cancellation The enrollment fees, net of bank charges, are not refundable under any circumstances, except in the case of cancellation of a course due to force majeure or failure to reach a minimum number of participants. The accommodation fee, net of bank charges, is refundable in the event of cancellation by the participant.

Covid-19 Regulations CdM San Michele, as well as taking all possible precautions and necessary equipment on site to prevent contagion and to comply with the regulations in force, will communicate after the registration the protocol to be followed for a course and a residence as safe as possible.
