While other Forbes magazine ranks Indiana as the 16th slow and for others it may be booming, but that made a positive impact on our state, states are drowning in debt (think Illinois best state for business. Then former Gov. Mitch Daniels, along with legislative leadership in the House and Senate, came in and changed not only the rules of the game but I would argue the game itself. Remember that black hole of a BMV we had in the 1990’s and early 2000’s? And remember how quickly Gov. Daniels came in and cleaned house there. Then there was the deal he struck to lease the toll road that resulted in approximately $3.8 billion to fund major moves - which I still argue was a phenomenal deal for the state of Indiana. Then there was property tax reform. All these changes - and there certainly are many more that I’ve left out - created a paradigm shift in the way Indiana does business. The leaders of this great state aren’t afraid to take risks and challenge the status quo in a big way, and because of that Indiana is increasingly becoming a recognized leader in job creation, business development, edu- cation (although more in its infancy than other areas), and affordability (i.e., low taxes) just to name a few. Most importantly to our industry though, is that focus on job creation. By and large, a job is the single most im- portant factor to every potential homebuyer out there. Without a job, they have no in- come and without income, they aren’t pur- chasing or remodeling a home (with few exceptions, such as the independently wealthy). Fortunately, Indiana takes attract- ing jobs seriously. That’s why we’ve seen legislation pass such as Right to Work, a corporate income tax rate reduction, the elimination of the inheritance tax, educa- tion reform, and a complete overhaul of Indiana’s criminal code. Businesses will consider locating here (or remaining here in some cases) if the environment is favor- able for conducting their business. Those businesses employ people, and people want a place to live that has good schools, is safe, and affordable. So not only are businesses looking at the things that directly affect their bottom line when con- sidering where to locate, they’re also look- ing at quality of life variables as well. As a result of all the effort expended by the out- standing leaders in the House, Senate and Governor’s Office, this entire package of big changes the state has been pursuing over the past five years or so is beginning to pay Page 10, Indiana Builder News July / August, 2014 POLITICAL PROACTION News from around the state
