Hello… and welcome to the new season at Salisbury Playhouse.

Classic English drama and comedy have long been a prominent part of the Playhouse programme and this season we have some fantastic revivals to enjoy. Betrayal by Harold Pinter, first produced by the National Theatre in 1978, is one of his most accessible and compelling dramas. Our brand new production, directed by Associate Director Jo Newman and designed by Hannah Wolfe, will open the season and promises to bring Pinter’s trademark tension and dark humour thrillingly to life.

Following a packed season of visiting work, we are delighted to be co- producing the classic Ealing comedy The Ladykillers with the New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich and the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch.

Our pantomime this year will be Jack and the Beanstalk created by the team behind Aladdin and Cinderella whilst in The Salberg we will follow up last year’s highly successful The Night Before Christmas with a brand new show for younger audiences Little Robin Redbreast.

We also have Stage 65’s collaboration with Kazzum at Salisbury Museum over the summer.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Playhouse very soon.

Jerry is a literary agent; Emma runs an art gallery; Robert is a publisher. Emma and Robert are married and Jerry is Robert’s best friend, but Emma and Jerry have a seven-year affair and Robert has secrets of his own.

Wait Until Dark By Frederick Knott Monday 25 – Saturday 30 September

From the hand of Frederick Knott, author of Dial M for Murder, and the producers behind Night Must Fall and Birdsong, comes a major revival of this classic, edge of your seat, thriller.

Set amidst the social turbulence of 60’s London the play follows the story of Suzy, a blind woman who, left alone in her apartment, becomes embroiled with a group of conmen hatching an elaborate scam. As the tension notches up, Suzy is left to fend for herself but with the phone line cut dead and the house plunged into darkness, can Suzy outwit the murderous visitors?

Wait Until Dark, made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1967, is often ranked as one of the top 100 scariest films of all time and this exciting new production reclaims it for the stage.

A star cast includes Jack Ellis (Prime Suspect & Bad Girls) and Oliver Mellor (Coronation Street).

The Wipers Times By Ian Hislop & Nick Newman Based on a true story Monday 23 – Saturday 28 October

Returning to Salisbury following a sell-out run in 2016 and direct from a West End season, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s The Wipers Times tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of The Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line.

In a bombed-out building during the First World War in the Belgian town of Ypres (mis-pronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Defying both authority and gas attacks, it proves a huge success with the troops

A Salisbury Playhouse, New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich and Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch Production by arrangement with Fiery Angel Limited, London in the Main House

The Ladykillers By Graham Linehan Tuesday 31 October – Saturday 18 November

When Mrs Wilberforce puts a sign in her newsagent’s window advertising ‘A Room to Let’ she’s delighted when the mysterious Professor Marcus proclaims it perfect for rehearsing his unorthodox string quintet. However, she soon discovers that she is not making tea for a motley band of musicians but harbouring a gang of hardened criminals and conmen planning the great King’s Cross Train Robbery!

As his masterplan goes off the rails, and the bodies drop onto them, it begins to dawn on the Professor that, in Mrs Wilberforce (and General Gordon, her extraordinary featherless parrot), he may have finally met his match.

Graham Linehan (Father Ted, The IT Crowd) has adapted this much- loved Ealing Comedy for the stage, mixing madcap comedy and criminal capers to hilarious effect.
