Boundary Description The Disston-Tacony Industrial Waterfront Historic District is comprised of 16 tax parcels, each of which is defined by a metes and bounds description in its deed. A list of the tax parcels comprising the historic district can be found in the district inventory. Physical Description Located in the geological region known as the Piedmont Upland Section of the Piedmont Province, the Disston-Tacony Industrial Waterfront Historic District is located immediately upon the Delaware River in the northeast section of the City of Philadelphia. The subject historic district is located approximately 9 miles from City Hall, and two miles from the northeastern city limit on relatively flat topography. The district, which encompasses and/or includes approximately 8 city blocks, consisting of clusters of industrial buildings that comprised the Keystone Saw Works and were built by Henry Disston & Sons between 1872 and 1943.1 The following is a general description of the district’s physical boundary, but the legal boundary is defined by the 16 tax parcels in the historic district inventory. 1 Blocks 1, 2, 4, and 5 were are square blocks that were entirely devoted to the operations of the plant from the time of primary development to the sale of the firm in 1954. Blocks 3, 6, and 9 are partial blocks that were devoted to the operations of the plan from the time of primary development until the sale of the firm in 1954. Blocks 7 is a square block that was historically owned and partly developed for the purposes of the plant but was ultimately subdivided and sold off over time during the period of significance. Block 8 was owned, developed, and operated for the purposes of the plant, but was sold off during the period of significance. In addition, the Keystone Saw Works was a name that evolved overtime, including the Keystone Saw, Tool, Steel, and File Works. Captions from the previous page: Figure 1. Disston-Tacony Industrial Waterfront Historic District 2 The southeastern boundary of the district is the Delaware River, which was primary to the siting of the plant in the 1870s. The southwestern boundary of the district is parcel with the stone wall and iron fence on the southwest side of Unruh Avenue, extending from the southeast at the Delaware River to New State Road at the northwest. The northwestern boundary of the district is more irregular, primarily being New State Road, but also including one property to the northwest of New State Road and southeast of I-95. The northeastern boundary of the district is the curving path of a former railroad right-of-way bisecting Block 3. The path of Milnor Street runs Unruh Avenue at the southwest to Disston Street at the northeast between New State Road and the Delaware River. A small section of the street formerly known as Wissinoming runs from the southwest at Unruh Avenue to the northeast where it intersects with New State Road. BUILT ENVIRONMENT Formerly Henry Disston & Sons’ Keystone Saw Works, the Disston-Tacony Waterfront Historic District is entirely industrial in character, being defined by vignettes of late nineteenth and early to mid-twentieth century factory buildings, structures, and other physical features (Figure 7). All of the buildings are of masonry construction, detached and semi-detached, and range from one to three stories in height. While some buildings are large in scale for their intended purpose, others are small, but most of the buildings are medium size industrial buildings that were design and/or reconfigured over time for specific purposes and functions. Among its other physical features, the district includes a few ruins that appear to be structurally sound, as well as stone walls and iron fences and gates. In addition, there are both public streets and shared right-of-ways within the district, several of which retain historic paving

  • Hamilton Disston
    HAMILTON DISSTON Hamilton Disston was born August 23, 1844, in Philadelphia. He worked in his father's saw manufacturing plant until he signed up to join the troops fighting in the Civil War. Twice during the early years of fighting, he enlisted, only to be hauled home after his father paid the bounty for another soldier to take his son's place. He eventually accepted his son's wishes and supplied Hamilton and 100 other workers from the saw plant with equipment to form the Disston Volunteers. Hamilton served as a private in the Union Army until the end of the war. Hamilton Disston purchased four million acres of marshland shortly after the Civil War. Included in his purchase was the small trading post of Allendale, which was eventually renamed Kissimmee. Disston wished to drain the area surrounding Kissimmee and deepen the Kissimmee River, so products could be shipped into the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Many steamboats passed through the area with cargoes of cypress lumber and sugar cane. Disston committed suicide on April 30, 1896, after a disastrous freeze led many families to relocate further south. Disston's land company stopped payment on bonds and returned to Philadelphia. Hamilton Disston (23 Aug. 1844-30 Apr. 1896), land developer, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry Disston, an industrialist, and Mary Steelman. At the age of fifteen Disston started as an apprentice in one of the divisions of his father's factory, Keystone Saw, Tool, Steel and File Works, setting a precedent for other family members.

Cluster 1 consists of a group of neighborhoods closely connected to the Delaware River and the smaller waterways that formerly fed into it (Frankford Creek and its tributaries as well as Wissininoming Creek) in a portion of the city that was accessed mainly by boat and a single roadway in the first century of Philadelphia’s settlement. Like many other areas of the city, the neighborhoods of Cluster 1 were developed to a great extent because of the industries that were founded there, and their fortunes have risen and fallen with the city’s industrial growth and subsequent decay. Frankford was one of the earliest settled villages in the former Philadelphia County. Bridesburg was built on flat land made habitable by fill and bulwark along the riverfront. The land in Wissinoming and Tacony was characterized by country seats and farms until past the mid-nineteenth century when Henry Disston moved his Saw Works from Northern Liberties to land that had not yet been developed except for agriculture use. In the twentieth century, these neighborhoods became more closely connected to Center City through the completion of the Frankford Elevated subway in 1915.

The saw works was founded by Herny Disston in 1840 and he began relocating the business to T acony in 1872. In the twentieth centmy, the physically independent industrial town was overtaken by municipal expansion, however T acony maintains an urban rhythm and density-and consequently an identity-distinct from the rest of the city. Description: The T acony neighborhood is located in the southern part of northeast Philadelphia. It is roughly bounded by the Delaware River, and Cottman, Magee, and Frankford avenues.

    DESIGN & INSPIRATION The great tool makers – Henry Disston Discovering steel Henry found work in a local saw shop – an enterprise owned by the Johnson brothers – a struggling firm beholden to British Sheffield steel because of the strong prejudice Adversity and triumph: against tools made in America at the time. Henry matured into adulthood learning how to operate a fly press to cut teeth and coining them into a proper hammer-set; understanding how pitch, plate gauge and the steely resolve of Henry Disston the hang of a handle worked in a harmony of efficiency to sever wood fibre quickly while Mark Harrell looks at the life and achievements of Henry Disston, promoting an aesthetic serving form as well as function. His father, a skilled mechanical the man behind the long and fruitful Disston saw legacy engineer, had taught his son well: a good mechanic and businessman will always prosper, as long as he confronts adversity head on, with imagination and a strong drive to persevere. Like other young men seeking Disston’s improved their way in the hardscrabble Philadelphia universal saw clamp of 1840, Henry was determined to carve his own mark in a world filled with opportunity and someday out-compete the British from a friend and went back to work.
