OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To inspire visitors to Cley Marshes to learn about and understand the value of ’s exceptional coastline, wildlife and habitats by delivering and supporting ’s engagement programme (including programming, education and community activities) at the Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre at Cley Marshes.

REPORTING TO: Cley Visitor Centre Manager and working closely with the Head of Engagement and Senior Education Officer and Senior Community Officer

REPORTING TO POST HOLDER: Volunteers, course leaders and tutors

OTHER WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Within the organisation: NWT Engagement team, Cley staff and volunteers Cley and Marshes Wardens, Interpretation Officer

Outside the organisation: Education sector: schools, colleges and universities, visitors/members of the public, local community groups and businesses, staff within other statutory and voluntary organisations, including National Trust, RSPB, Norfolk Partnership, District Council, Norfolk County Council, Cley Parish Council

MAIN DUTIES:

1. Promote, develop and deliver an events programme based at NWT Cley and and the surrounding coast

a) Develop, promote and manage a comprehensive events programme that meets the needs of diverse audiences including natural history workshops, art workshops, guided walks, talks, health and wellbeing events and performances.

b) Develop, promote and manage festival events with the established Cley Calling format; to engage visitors through diverse activities relating to music, performing arts, literature and exhibitions

c) Develop and manage commissioned work involving artists and performers, designed to raise awareness of the importance and value of the Cley and Salthouse Living Coast

d) Maintain effective booking system and administrative records

e) Work with the programming group to develop a costed programme of events, ensuring regular meetings in advance of seasonal programme sign off

f) Liaise with artists and agents to agree contract arrangements, negotiated fees and other requirements

Lead on delivering Cley formal education and engagement as part of the wider NWT engagement strategy

a) Working closely with NWT’s Senior Education Officer develop, promote and deliver formal education activity and outdoor learning programmes for schools, colleges and universities, particularly aimed at KS1, KS2, KS3, GCSE and A level groups visiting Cley Marshes

b) Ensure all groups led by the post-holder receive an appropriate health and safety introduction, have received relevant activity risk assessments and that education equipment stored at Cley is made available to groups on the day of their visit and at the end of each visit, education equipment is safely stored.

c) Develop a wide range of support materials that are up to date and accessible to the wide range of learners visiting the Centre.

d) Deliver outreach visits to local schools

e) Develop and maintain good relationships with universities and colleges visiting Cley and in liaison with NWT’s Senior Education Officer promote and encourage university groups to use the Centre

f) Work closely with the Senior Education Officer to ensure that all school and education group enquiries received at Cley are handled professionally following NWT procedures and best practice

g) Ensure, where workshops are being led by external tutors, that visiting tutors are welcomed, given an induction to the Centre (including health and safety) and that all equipment is returned and properly stored after each workshop

h) Build good links with the local community involving individuals and community groups with particular heritage, landscape and wildlife skills in leading workshops. Ensure that workshops respond to interests identified by the community. And that some workshops are developed at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels enabling the development of learning for participants and encouraging repeat bookings

i) Develop activities based on programmed exhibitions linked to Arts Award accreditation

3. Promote, develop and deliver an exhibitions programme based at NWT Cley and Salthouse Marshes and the surrounding coast

a) Work with the Cley Centre Manager to build good links with local artists, writers, and traditional local coastal industries encouraging them to develop exhibitions at the Centre linked to the landscape, wildlife or local heritage of the Cley and Salthouse Living Coast.

b) Develop a series of prestigious exhibitions in the education centre working with artists from across the UK

4. Build strong and positive links with local community groups, businesses and the coastal community promoting the use of the Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre

a) Work with Cley Centre Manager and site wardens to promote and deliver local community days raising awareness of conservation management and habitat improvements

b) Work with the Cley Centre Manager on the provision and support the hire of the Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre by community groups and members of the public

c) Ensure community groups and business groups booking the Centre receive a warm welcome on arrival and an induction (including health and safety) to facilities and equipment

d) Working with the PR and Comms Manager, produce and distribute literature relating to the centre and reserve activities and its uses

5. Ensure the effective management of the Aspinall Centre multi-use space

a) Be fully familiar with the interpretation equipment and its use, ensuring that it is actively managed to provide the best possible and educational experience for visitors, making full use of the ITC technology and media provided

b) Working with the Head of Engagement, Interpretation Officer and Cley Centre Manager, ensure that any changing and developing interpretation media, are being managed and evolve

6. Support the reporting, monitoring and evaluation of education and community project outputs and outcomes following agreed methodology

a) Work with Senior Education Officer to ensure all school group visits to Cley incorporate evaluation by both teachers and pupils of learning outcomes

b) Support the Centre Manager in evaluation of visitor experience at Cley Marshes

c) Ensure all Cley events programmes include appropriate levels of feedback and evaluation from participants

7. Volunteer recruitment, training and management

a) working with the NWT Volunteer Officer ensure that education and event volunteers are recruited and trained following NWT best practice guidance and volunteer policy and receive regular feedback

8. Undertake efficient and effective Duty Management responsibilities of the centre on occasion

OTHER DUTIES:

 Undertake ad hoc duties and tasks as discussed and agreed with NWT Cley Marshes centre manager / line manager  Work in accordance with NWT policies, paying particular attention to Health and Safety policy, environmental policy, and contribute to the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment  Contribute to NWT meetings, attending Engagement team meetings regularly, Cley staff meetings, and other internal business meetings  Work towards delivery of NWT’s Business Strategy

ESSENTIAL PERSON REQUIREMENTS:

 Excellent communication skills

 Strong enthusiasm for, and a good understanding of, nature conservation with a particular knowledge of marine and coastal habitats and wildlife

 Experience of managing events programmes

 Proven experience and ability to develop and deliver education programmes to a wide range of audiences including schools and adult groups.

 Experience of working within an education centre or field centre would be desirable but is not essential

 Previous experience of working with and managing volunteers

 The ability to maintain effective and efficient administration schemes

 Excellent organisational skills and ability to work both under own initiative as well as a member of a team.

 Proven computer and ICT skills - competent in the use of all Microsoft Office packages

 Current clean driving licence or access to flexible transport to parts of the region not served by public transport.

 The post-holder would be expected to have a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.
