1997-98 University of San Diego Toreros Women's Basketball Media Guide

lJANefHy of san Diego ArchtYN 2 Previewing the '97-98 Season

This year Head Coach Kathy Marpe enters her eighteenth season at the helm of the USO women's basketball program. As she has done the previous 17 years, Marpe is stressing to this year's squad the importance of goals and learning from past experiences. Marpe wants her players to improve upon last year's misfortunes and have more desire this season to get back to the top of the West Coast Confer ence standings. "Our goal is to build on the effort we put in last year and learn from the experi ences to strive to make improvements and reach another level of success this sea son," says Marpe. "We want to continue to play a tenacious defense and keep our quick tempo offense. The key elements to winning games this year will be in how successful we our in forcing other teams to alter their style of basketball." The Toreros will have a young lineup in '97-98 with a total of eight underclassmen and only three seniors. Last year's leading scorer senior Nailah Thompson and sophomore Susie Erpelding are the two main components of this year's team and are a prime example of blending youth with experience. Thompson, who is the most experienced returner, is a two-time All WCC Honorable Mention selection. Though Thompson will be out until January with a foot injury, she should be ready for con ference play that begins January 9 at San Francisco. Erpelding, in her freshman season last year, was the only player to start in every game in '96-97. She was also the team's second leading scorer and WCC's leading freshman scorer (10.3 ppg). The two other seniors on this year's squad are guard Pat Sencion and center Justine Tuhakaraina. Sencion was a pleasant surprise for the Toreros last year, Susie Erpelding led all wee freshman scorers last season and ranked 13th overall in the wee. entering the starting lineup for the final 12 games of the year and averaging 4.7 points per game. Sencion battled knee injuries through her first three seasons at USO. Tuhakaraina ranked second on the team in blocks and played in 23 games. Bouncing back to rejoin the starting lineup this year will be junior Kari Ambrose, who was injured with stress fractures in both legs last year. Ambrose led the team at the point guard position two seasons ago and averaged 9.3 points and 3.2 assists per game. Another junior, forward Maggie Dixon has only missed one game over the past two years and averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last season. Three sophomores who saw plenty of action last year are Amanda Bishop, LaKia Alexander, and Jessica Gray. Gray was the only other player to play in all 27 games and was the team's third leading rebounder (4.9 rpg). Alexander missed just two games in her freshman season and scored in all but three games. Bishop entered the starting lineup last year after the injury to Ambrose and was one of the team's floor leaders. She ranked second on the team in free throw percentage (73%) and assists (43). The Toreros lost six from last year's squad, but Coach Marpe feels she has two gems to step in immediately. Freshmen Jamie Lucia and Jennifer Tuiolosega should see plenty of action in their first years at USO. Tuiolosega was the Times-Orange County Player of the Year last season playing for Ocean View High and also selected to the Orange County Register's All County Team. Tuiolosega aver aged 20.2 points (ranking her fifth in the county) and 4.5 assists per game while guiding Ocean View to a league title for the fourth straight year. Lucia led Roseburg High in scoring (12.0 ppg), rebounding (10.0 rpg) and blocks (2.0 bpg) during her junior year. She was an All Southern Oregon Confernce selection for two years as well, but is bouncing back from a stress fracture in her ankle suffered during her senior campaign. Marpe will look for her 200th win at the school and 300th win overall this season as the Toreros embark on another tough schedule. USO has 12 non-conference games including road games against Long Beach State, UCLA, and Denver. The Toreros home schedule includes their home opener versus Toledo (Nov. 21) as well as hosting Fairfield, San Jose State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Lehigh. The Toereos open (Jan. 9) and close (Feb. 21) conference play with San Francisco and face three teams back-to-back (Portland - Jan. 17 &22, LMU - Jan. 31 & Feb. 6, Nailah Thompson was the Toreros leading scorer St. Mary's - Feb. 11 & Feb. 14). The West Coast Conference Tournament returns to and wee Honorable Mention selection in 96-97. Santa Clara this season and runs February 26 - March 1.

1997-98 University of San Diego Toreros Women's Basketball Media Guide 4 Head Coach Kathy Marpe -18th Season

Kathy Marpe realizes basketball is a game of adjustments. As she embarks on her 18th season at USO and 25th season overall, Marpe continues to redefine her approach to the game. "As a coach, you have to let the players play because they are so much more talented than in the past. It used to be whenever our teams were on the break we would look to setup for the jump shot or power layup inside. Now the key is to be less controlling, to let the players create shots for themselves. " A veteran of the coaching profession for over two decades, Marpe has made changes to the Torero program to utilize the team's speed and athleticism. The past few seasons USO has found success by playing a full-court game which has strengthened their defensive effort. This season, Marpe will imple ment a more balanced attack that combines the team's shooting ability from the outside with their strength from the inside.

The WCC's "Dean" As the "dean" of West Coast Conference coaches, Marpe knows the league better than anyone. Marpe is the active leader in victories with 198 at USO and ranks third amongst conference coaches in WCC wins. In 1993, Marpe was voted WCC Co-Coach of the Year by her peers after leading the Toreros to the WCC Postseason Tournament title and their only NCAA Tournament appearance. In 11 WCC seasons, Marpe has produced 12 All-WCC per formers, 12 WCC All-Academic selections and has placed four players on the WCC All-Freshman teams.

Prior To San Diego Prior to arriving at USO, Marpe directed the University of New Mexico to seven seasons of success on and off the court. The Lobos were 51-30 in Marpe's last three seasons, having posted wins over two nationally-ranked teams in the same season. Playing in "The Pit", the UNM women drew over 1,000 a game with crowds reaching the 2,000-3,000 mark on occasion - attendance figures unheard of in the mid-70s. By the time she left the Albu querque campus, Marpe had led the Lobos to consecutive finishes in the AP Top 20 and six AIAW Regional appearances in seven years.

The current alignment has remained unchanged since 1979, making the West Coast Conference the third most stable conference in the nation. Only the Pacific- IO Conference and the Ivy League have remained the same for a longer period. The conference sponsors thirteen championships for women (basketball, crew, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and volleyball) and men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis). Current WCC members have won 14 NCAA team championships. The University of San Francisco has won the most titles (7), followed by Pepperdine (5) and Santa Clara and Gonzaga have one one apiece. San Diego owns a pair of Division II men's team tennis crowns ('74 & '75). 1997-98 University of San Diego Toreros Women's Basketball Media Guide 24 The University of San Diego

Setting The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher educa tion. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is lo cated just l O minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth cen tury Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspi ration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

The Campus The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. The physical beauty of the campus reaches beyond the "eye of the beholder." Reverend Mother Rosalie Hill, one of the institutions founders, believed in the enhancement of learning through beauty and harmony. Hence for the University, beauty is a transcendental quality imparted to students as part of their education to truth and goodness: a simple but profound educational philosophy. Since 1984, USO has completed nine major construction and expansion projects. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and labratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M . Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.

Academics USO enrolls more than 6,600 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: 1. Over 97 percent of US D's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation.

Student Life Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, con certs, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such ;:is adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. A Message From President Hayes ...

"As the president of the University of San Diego, this is my third Torero season. I am proud of the USD basketball team and pleased that the university supports the program in every way possible, including emphasis on scholarship assistance, aca demic excellence, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. Our student-athletes are winners on and off the court. They demonstrate the values that characterize a USD education - commitment, integrity, teamwork, disci pline and respect for the dignity of all human beings. These are qualities that will help them throughout their lives. I am looking forward to the coming season and hope that you will join me in supporting our team. It's an exciting schedule and promises to be a great year."

JENNY CRAIG PAVILION Sid and Jenny Craig are giving $10 million to the University of San Diego, with $7 million directed toward construction of the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a multi-use sports and activities facility that will be the home of USD's Toreros sports teams. The pavilion, which will be located at the eastern end of campus between the football and baseball fields, will include a 5, 100-seat gymnasium, administrative and coaching offices, classrooms, weight training and athletic training fa cilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stands, a VIP reception room and an entry plaza that will take advantage of the view across campus to the ocean. The USD Athletic Hall of Fame will also be housed in the facility. "The Jenny Craig Pavilion is vital to the quality of life on campus," says Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics. "It will have a positive and historical im pact on many generations of students. It will also allow us to pursue championship venues for men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball." Other benefits the administration and coaches an ticipate are the opportunity to attract television cov erage of games, and to host West Coast Confer ence tournaments, USD tournaments, and special games such as the Torero Tip Off, held the last few years at the San Diego Sports Arena. 1997-98 University of San Diego Toreros Women's Basketball Media Guide 26 Tom Iannacone - Director of Athletics

Tom Iannacone is in his tenth year as Director of Athletics at the University of San Diego. He was named Director of Athletics on September 1, 1988 after holding the same position the previous four years at St. Francis College of Pennsylvania. At USD, Iannacone directs an Athletic Department that includes 16 NCAA Division I inter collegiate varsity teams, eight men's and eight women's, plus intramurals and recreation. In the last nine years behind his direction and leadership, Torero Athletics has enjoyed successes both on and off the playing field. His accomplishments at USD include an internal reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, aca demic support, and a university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instrumental in USD gaining membership to the Pioneer Football League, which began play in 1993. He is a member of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Execu tive Committee; and is past Chairman of the West Coast Conference Athletics Directors Com mittee. During Iannacone's tenure, facilities at the USD Sports Center, along with all athletic fields, have seen vast improvements. Improvements at the Sports Center include complete renova tions of both the north and south wings that added offices for administrators and coaches; addi tional locker rooms for women's basketball, volleyball and women's soccer; an athletic department conference room; and an academic support room. Torero Stadium, where football and men's and women's soccer compete, was widened to accommodate soccer, and added a state-of the-art lighting system and scoreboard. The Softball Complex has benefitted with a scoreboard, new dugouts and batting cages. Additionally, The Canyon Field received lighting for intercollegiate practices and intramural use. This fall the university will kickoff its Capital Campaign for the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a new 5,000 seat multi-purpose facility that will be home for USD basketball and volleyball, and benefit the entire university community. On the playing fields, USD has sent nineteen teams to NCAA Tournaments since Iannacone's arrival in the Fall of 1988. Additionally, the school has captured five conference championships; nineteen NCAA All-Americans; fifteen CoSIDNGTE Academic All-Americans; eleven conference Coaches of the Year; ten conference Players of the Year; and three West Coast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Since '88 the university has been the host site for NCAA Tournament events for women's volleyball, men's soccer and women's tennis. Prior to USD, Iannacone built an impressive list of credentials at St. Francis College as Director of Athletics between 1984-87. His major contributions included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development. He served as assistant Director of Athletics at Fordham University between 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties, he was assistant football coach for the Rams. Between 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The '77 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 he was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for his outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and field, and football in Connecticut Public School Districts from 1964-76. He made his collegiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Con necticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric. All three are graduates of the University of San Diego.
