Experience first-hand the environment of one of the largest Impressionist art colonies in America, including the Robert F. Schumann Artists’ Trail. This new addition to the Museum, opened in 2019, offers an opportunity to take in the natural, artistic, and historic highlights of our site via a half-mile, ADA-accessible pathway that links the fragments of the original Griswold estate for the first time since 1936. Inside this guide, you will find a detailed map with points of interest around the Museum and along the trail. Erosion or accretion can reshape the beach and dunes over time so EHA remapping is needed for resource protection and coastal develop- ment. This map updates and supersedes the previous Beach and Dune Geology Aerial Photo series maps (Dickson, 2001) that were based on 1986 aerial photographs and field work. Using ESRI ArcGIS, each 1986 photograph was georeferenced, using a minimum of four ground control points per image, to orthophotographs from spring 2003 ORTHO_1F (1-ft resolution) and April 2001 ORTHO_HF (0.5-ft resolution) from the Maine Office of GIS. Previously mapped frontal dune and back dune boundaries were digi- D1 Frontal dune. The frontal dune is the area consisting of tized, checked for accuracy, and adjusted using the newer photo- the most seaward ridge of sand and gravel and includes graphs in combination with field work and 2004 Light Detection and former frontal dune areas modified by development. -

However in the years following quite a number of Saybrook settlers acquired land and established homes east of the Connecticut River; amongst them were the Lay, Noyes, Champion, Griswold, Marvin, DeWolf, Lord and Ely families. On February 13, 1665, at a ceremony known as "The Loving Parting," the friendly separation of Saybrook and Lyme took place, and Lyme became an independent "plantation"; two years later, on May 9, 1667, a decree of the General Court at Hartford authorized the change of name to that of Lyme. There is a tra dition that Lyme was named after Lyme Regis in Dorset, Eng land, based on an unconfirmed legend that the Griswolds and/or the Sills came from that town. Others believe that the fact that the Lees of Lyme came from Lyme, Cheshire, England, may have had something to do with this town being so named. Lyme originally comprised an area of 80 square miles. In 1835 the eastern section became an independent town known as East Lyme; and in 1855 the south-west portion withdrew and became legally Old Lyme. In connection with setting the boundaries of Lyme, the story runs that there was much controversy about a strip of land be tween Bride Brook and the Niantic Rive*, also claimed by New London. -

Florence Griswold Museum, Gift of Janet Eltinge Art and the New England Farm – the Perils and Pleasures of Farming The Florence Griswold Museum is uniquely positioned to tell the story of Art and the New England Farm, on view May 11 through September 16. This exhibition delves into the agricultural heritage of Florence Griswold’s family estate, the Lyme region and beyond, to examine the complex history and character of New England’s farms. Paintings, drawings, and photographs by artists from the 1830s to the present day will trace the unique challenges of farming in New England. The Museum’s property is itself a case study of family farms in New England. Purchased by the Griswolds in 1841, these grounds became a country estate with barns, an orchard, gardens, and riverfront pastures where the family practiced small-scale farming during Florence’s childhood. -

Town of Scarborough Annual Report 2009 In Memory of Blanche M. Cook Scarborough’s oldest resident at 107 and longtime holder of the Boston Post Cane, died on June 7, 2009. Blanche was born on October 13, 1901, in Nashua, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Joseph & Lillian (Blackstone) Small. The oldest of five children. Mrs. Cook grew up in the Pownal, Maine area until the age of 16. She then moved to Portland. There she lived with an Aunt and worked as a waitress at the Willows Hotel in Prouts Neck of Scarborough. She also worked at Haven’s Candy Kitchen in Portland where she learned to dip chocolate. She married John Cook (of South Portland) on January 18, 1928, in Portsmouth, New Hamp- shire. They had one daughter, Lorraine. The family lived in South Portland until 1947 when they move to their new home on Westwood Avenue in Scarborough. Once their daughter was older Mrs. Cook went to work for Len Libby’s and later on at Libby’s Candies, both of Scarborough, again dipping chocolate. -

CHILDE HASSAM: Docent Notes The Childe Hassam oil painting in the Mint‟s holdings –“The Stone Cottage, Old Lyme”- has always been a favorite of our museum visitors, at least in my experience. This short survey and biographical note is followed by a brief timeline and some authoritative quotes from art historians. Hassam (born in Boston in 1859, died at the summer home East Hampton NY 1935), is widely known as America‟s foremost Impressionist. He is often described as “the American Monet”, and his works were collected and admired during his life by major collectors such as Freer, Whitney, Frick, and White -–no struggling, starving, misunderstood artist he! “Stone Cottage, Old Lyme” is obviously painted outdoors (en plein air to use the French term), with a very pleasing impressionist palette – pastel and deep blues, greens, and yellows. Note that he used no blacks or greys. The sun is to the left and behind the cottage, casting a chimney shadow on the roof and shadow on the ground. While there is a wisp of smoke from the chimney, the people seem warmed by the sun. The adult walker is effectively silhouetted against the tree trunks. Hassam used the quick, short brushstrokes of the impressionist –though he decried this term, and never acknowledged being influenced by the French Impressionists--to give the characteristic vibrant, shimmering light effect. Unlike the French, his works always had form and did not disintegrate into simply “vibrations of light”. The strokes seem loose but controlled. Note the different qualities of brushwork: quick vigorous horizontals for the roof, choppy impasto for the foliage, wide diagonals for the sky. -

Slovinsky Maine Geological Survey, Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry 1 Beach and Dune Restoration, Scarborough, ME Maine Geological Survey Introduction Western Beach is a small pocket beach between Ferry Rock to the northwest and the Prouts Neck headland to the southeast (Figure 1). It lies on the eastern side of the Scarborough River inlet, across the inlet from Pine Point, and is adjacent to the municipally Ferry Beach owned Ferry Beach. Although Western Beach is privately owned by the Prouts Neck Country Club, it is open to the public and is a popular Ferry Rock destination for sunbathers, fishermen and beach and dog walkers. In a larger context, the Pine Point Scarborough River and Western Beach are located at the northern end of Saco Bay, Maine’s largest expanse (approximately 7 miles) of contiguous beach and dunes in the State. Western Beach was “nourished” with 90,000 cubic yards of sand dredged from the Scarborough River federal channel by the US Army Corps of Engineers in late 2004. -
