Phillips comes to Northern State after Division I head coaching stops at North Dakota State University and Ohio University. He is just the sixth head coach for the Wolves since 1946.

Phillips takes the helm of the Northern State program after spending the past five seasons at Ohio University, and previous seven at North Dakota State. He went 81-77 overall leading the Bobcats and 134-84 with the Bison. Phillips will look to continue the strong tradition of Northern State basketball, as the Wolves have won back-to- back NSIC Conference Championships and are the NCAA Division II National Attendance leaders for the last 11 seasons, averaging well over 3,000 fans per game.

Phillips led the Ohio University Bobcats to the CBI semifinal round in his tenure with the program. OU saw 11 all-conference performances in five seasons under Phillips including one MAC Player of the Year honor (Antonio Campbell) and one MAC Freshman of the Year award (Jordan Dartis). Jaaron Simmons broke the single season Ohio University and MAC assist records in 2015-16, dishing out 275 on the year. Campbell was an Associated The Phillips File Press All-America selection following a stellar 2015-16 campaign, where the Bobcats tallied their best season under • 22nd Head Coach in Phillips going 23-12 overall. Northern State history In his seven seasons at North Dakota State, Phillips led the Bison to two Championships, two Summit League Tournament Championships, and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. A total of 14 Bison • Head coaching stops earned all-conference accolades in his seven seasons, while four were named to the NABC All-District team and at NDSU and Ohio two tallied All-American accolades.

• 2-time Summit Phillips directed NDSU to their first Summit League crown and NCAA Division I Championship appearance in League Coach of the 2009; he was named the Summit League Coach of the Year and was one of ten finalists for the Hugh Durham Year Mid-Major Coach of the Year award. Senior Ben Woodside received Summit League Player of the Year honors that season, the first in NDSU program history. The 2013-14 campaign brought similar honors for the program winning their second Summit League Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. In addition to being named the • 25 All-Conference league coach of the year, senior Taylor Braun earned the league player of the year award. Performers The Bison advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in his final season with the program, posting a • 4 Conference 26-7 record overall, and 12-2 mark in Summit League action. The No. 12-seeded Bison knocked off No. 5-seeded Players of the Year Oklahoma in overtime, 80-75 in the Second Round. He left his legacy on the program as the fourth winningest coach in school history. • 3 NABC All- Americans Phillips began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at NSIC counterpart Wayne State College as a member of Greg McDermott’s staff. From there he made assistant coaching stops at Lake Superior and Milwaukee, before taking the Director of Basketball Operations post at Wisconsin. With the Badgers, Phillips handled the day-to-day scheduling, coordinated travel, budgeting and on-campus recruiting for Bo Ryan’s staff. Phillips then joined former Northern State assistant, Tim Miles as an assistant at NDSU. He spent three years on Miles’ staff before being elevated into his first head-coaching role in 2007.

A native of Reedsburg, Wis., Phillips graduated from Wisconsin-Platteville with a degree in business and psychology in 1996. He played basketball for four seasons at UWP under Bo Ryan and was captain of the Pioneers’ undefeated national championship team in 1995.

Swanson is no stranger to the Phillips system as a member of his staffs at both North Dakota State and Ohio. In ten years at the Division I level, Swanson has mentored/developed 21 All-Conference award-winning student-athletes, including five all-first team honorees, three freshman of the year, and one conference player of the year.

Swanson most recently spent that last five seasons at Ohio University as an Assistant Coach (2017-19), and prior to that as the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations (2014-17). In 2015-16, the Bobcats produced the second biggest turnaround in program history, going 23-12 overall with a trip to the CBI semifinals.

Prior to his time at OU, Swanson spent one season at San Jose State and two seasons at North Dakota State as the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. The Bison went 41-24 in his two seasons, earning a berth into the Invitational each year.

Swanson began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Boise State University. The Broncos went 22-13 overall and advanced to the semifinal round of the CBI. From 2008-10, Swanson spent time as an assistant coach at Heritage High School in Vancouver, Washington and as the head coach at Payson High School in Payson, Arizona. Before starting his coaching career, Swanson played four seasons of professional basketball in Australia, garnering two League-MVP awards, while leading the league in scoring two years.

He is a 2003 graduate of Concordia College with a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education, and 2011 graduate of Idaho State University with a master’s degree in Physical Education in Athletic Administration. Swanson played collegiately at Fergus Falls Community College where he was an all-state and all-region selection, as well as the 2000 Fergus Falls Student-Athlete of the Year. Swanson moved on to the University of North Dakota and then to Concordia College. He closed out his college career as a MIAC first team selection for the Cobbers.

Jared and his wife, Jessica, have two sons, Jett and Nash, and one daughter, Luna. northern state university assistant coach Taylor tucker • 1st season Taylor Tucker enters his first year as an assistant coach for the Northern State men’s basketball team in the fall of 2019. Tucker joins the Wolves after two seasons as the assistant at Monmouth College. The Scots won the 2018 conference overall and tournament championships in Tucker’s first season with the program, while also qualifying for the NCAA Championships first round. Prior to his time at Monmouth, Tucker was the assistant coach at Olivet Nazarene in 2016-17. In his three years of collegiate experience, Tucker has coach the CCAC Freshman of the Year and NAIA All-American Nick Reed (ONU) and back-to-back Midwest Conference Players of the Year, Will Carius and Will Jones (MC).

He is a 2016 graduate of Olivet Nazarene University with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education. Tucker played three seasons at ONU, making two NAIA National Tournament appearances. The Tigers won the 2015 regular season and tournament conference championships in his junior campaign. Tucker was named an NAIA Academic All-American in both 2015 and 2016. He is currently pursuing a master’s in Kinesiology Pedagogy from the University of Central Missouri.
