Failing which, the allotment will be cancelled. 2. In the event of allotment of Hostel room to the students of nearby villages/towns, University reserves the right to cancel their hostel allotment at any point. 3. Prescribed Hostel Fee must be remitted on or before 12th July, 2016 in the DSW SB A/c by way of Bank Challan available in the Office of the DSW. 4. Payment of Fee after due date will not be considered and Hostel Room allotted will be cancelled.

K. Narayan, can be read as „refraction,‟ a concept developed by Andre Lefevere. According to him refraction implies “the adaptation of a work of literature to a different audience, with the intention of influencing the way in which that audience reads that work (Lefevere, 1982).” The paper aims to elucidate the manifestation of television adaptation as refraction by examining various cultural, linguistic and ideological constraints, as discussed by Lefevere, which influenced its reproduction in the culture of the target language (Hindi), ultimately playing a major role in the history and culture of the target audience. The paper also aims to explore the reasons why and how television adaptation manipulated Narayan‟s literary fame in post-colonial India. Keywords: R.K. Narayan, television adaptation, Indian writing in English, refraction, translation studies, literary fame, post-colonial India. R. K. Narayan, the author of short stories‟ collection, Malgudi Days is one of those celebrated Indian English writers, who gained eminence, after Rabindranath Tagore, in the English speaking world. He was the first Indian English writer to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award by the Indian government in the year 1960. He was also nominated for Nobel Prize in the year 1996.

Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) 1 Girish Karnad (1938-2019) A renowned Kannada playwright, author, actor and film director, Girish Karnad was born on 19 May 1938 at Matheran, Bombay Presidency (now Maharashtra). After graduating from Karnataka University in 1958, Girish Karnad studied philosophy, politics, and economics as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford (1960–63). After his return to India, Girish Karnad started working with the Oxford University Press in Chennai, 1963, resigned in 1970 to devote full time to writing. At the young age of 35, he became the Director of the Film and the Television Institute of India, Pune (1974–1975), was also its Chairman (1999-2001). He was a visiting Professor at the University of Chicago, 1987–88. He served as the Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (1988–93), and the Director of the Nehru Centre, London (2000–2003). Girish Karnad started his career in acting and screenwriting in a Kannada movie, Samskara (1970) and acted in more than 50 films including Hindi and other regional languages. The notable among them are Vamsha Vriksha, Swami, Manthan, Nishant, Ahista Ahista, Nagamandala, Sankeerthana, Dharam Chakram, Hey Ram, Iqbal, China Gate, Pukar, Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. He played the role of Swami‟s father in the popular TV serial „Malgudi Days‟. Girish Karnad has been a recipient of several National Filmfare Awards -- Best Director and Best Screenplay. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Jnanpith Award in 1999.

He currently teaches as Assistant Professor at the Department of English, Subhas Chandra Bose Centenary College, Lalbagh, Murshidabad. Abstract The paper strives to explore various facets of reincarnation as a theme or device in popular Indian cinema. Reincarnation has been a popular theme in Indian cinema since the early days of Indian film industry. The take of Indian cinema on the subject is very different from that of World cinema or Hollywood; its root can be traced back to traditional Indian philosophy professing Karma and the concept of rebirth. The cyclic pattern of birth and death as professed in Indian philosophy is reflected in a number of ways in the reincarnations movies: through the repetitive usage of various tropes of music, image and also by adopting a cyclic narrative structure. Reincarnation as a theme attributes to the scope of retelling love stories and revenge sagas, thus enhancing the melodramatic ‘masala’ nature of popular Indian cinema. The movies largely dwell upon and invest in the concept of immortality of the soul and eternal love between the lovers spanning over births.

If we take the specific instance of Kannada cultural production, its centrality in the Kannada identity movement has been argued through tracing how Kannada linguistic nationalism has articulated itself through the site of the print and cinema industry—beginning with the high literary writings of Alur Venkat Rao, Galaganatha and B.M.Srikantiah in the colonial period and then the shift to popular culture, especially Kannada cinema in the post-independence period (Prasad 2003-2004, Nair 2005).1 We present a different argument here: Kannada identity politics is a projection of the underground economy of the Kannada cultural industry. Such a mapping should not be mistaken as a reading of an identity politics in ‗economic‘ terms where the linguistic is seen as a ‗false layering‘ to the ‗true economic tensions beneath‘ but as a revisiting of the cultural through the economic in more complex ways. The importance of understanding cultural economy is not merely confined to financial transactions and profit-making of culture industry but is closely tied to political articulations that emerge from this underground economy. The moment of political articulation is important because it is at this moment that the economic value of the cultural commodity meets its cultural value in a context otherwise of the difficulty of translating cultural value into economic value.

    Chapter XIII CULTURE Karnataka’s cultural heritage is rich and variegated. Kannada literature saw its first work during 9th Century and in modern times it has created seven winners of Jnanapeetha Award for their literary talents. Literary activity in other languages of neighbouring areas in this state and purely local languages like Tulu and Kodava is also considerable. Journalism in Kannada has its history dating back to 1843 and has many achievements to its credit. Karnataka has thrown up outstanding personalities of historical significance. In the musical map of India, the State has bright spots, whether it is Hindustani or Karnatak, the latter having originated in this land. In the field of dance and art too Karnataka has creditable achievements. Yakshagana is both a folk and elite art is flourishing here. The State’s tradition in folk arts is also colourful.When one thinks of the cultural scene, Shivaram Karanth, Kuvempu, Dr. Rajkumar, Maya Rao, Mallikarjuna Mansur, T. Chaudiah, K.K.Hebbar, Panith Bheemasen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal, B.V. Karanth U.R. Anantha Murthy, Girish Karnad, Chandrashekar Kambar are a few bright faces that shine forth. An attempt is made to survey the cultural pageant of Karnataka in this chapter. LITERATURE Kannada Literature: Kannada literature has a history dating back to at least 1500 years. This apart, the folk literature which began earlier, still runs parallel to the written form Ganga king. Saigotta Sivarama’s ‘Gajashtaka’ is cited as an example of early folk literature. The oldest available work in Kannada is however, a book on poetics, called ‘Kavirajamarga’. Some controversy surrounds this work regarding the authorship, but the consensus is that it was written more likely by the court poet Srivijaya than the Rashtrakuta king Amoghavarsha Nripathunga.
