The road I am on is private, it says, and only on market days am [ allowed here. I look around - no market to sec. Still, I have lo pa8s these gales to my research, becanse I am s·upposed to meet a certain Jon hCTe today, a trader at the market. With all the stories I had heard abont Borongh Market in my head, 1 get confnsed. There is nothing more to see than green gates and stalls covered with blue plastic sheets behind them. I wonder if this can really turn into a lively and extremely popular market during the weekend. In the corner I sec a sign: 'Information Centre. ' There is nobody. Except from some pigeons, all I see is grey walls, a dirty roof, gates, closed stalls and waste. Then I see Jon. A man in his forties, small and not very thin, walks to me. -

Ladbroke Grove
Background and Context The Ladbroke Grove Inquiry, which was conducted by Lord Cullen, arose out of the crash at Ladbroke Grove junction on 5 October 1999 between trains operated by Thames Trains and First Great Western. There were 31 fatalities. How the Topic was Handled The inquiry was conducted under section 14 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The inquiry had the following terms of reference: 1. To inquire into, and draw lessons from, the accident near Paddington Station on 5.10.99, taking account of the findings of the HSE ‘s [Health and Safety Executive] into immediate causes. 2. To general experience derived from relevant accidents on the railway since the Hidden inquiry [1988 Clapham Rail Crash], with a view to drawing conclusions about: o factors which affect safety management o the appropriateness of the current regulatory regime 3. In the light of the above, to make recommendations for improving safety on the future railway. The inquiry complemented, rather than replaced, investigations by the Health and Safety Executive. Dr Knapman, the coroner for Inner West London, carried out an inquest into each fatality, into the time and place of death, and the medical cause of death. In accordance with section 17A of the Coroners Act 1988, each of the inquests was adjourned to await the outcome of the inquiry and then not resumed. The costs of the inquest proceedings (much shorter than they would have been if there had been no public inquiry) were met by the local authorities with the coroner’s district (Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, Wandsworth and Merton). -

November 2016 Brick Lane Born: Exhibition and Events Gilbert & George contemplate one of Raju's photographs at the launch of Brick Lane Born Our main exhibition, on show until 7 January is Brick Lane Born, a display of over forty photographs taken in the mid-1980s by Raju Vaidyanathan depicting his neighbourhood and friends in and around Brick Lane. After a feature on ITV London News, the exhibition launched with a bang on 20 October with over a hundred visitors including Gilbert and George (pictured), a lively discussion and an amazing joyous atmosphere. Comments in the Visitors Book so far read: "Fascinating and absorbing. Raju's words and pictures are brilliant. Thank you." "Excellent photos and a story very similar to that of Vivian Maier." "What a fascinating and very special exhibition. The sharpness and range of photographs is impressive and I am delighted to be here." "What a brilliant historical testimony to a Brick Lane no longer in existence. Beautiful." "Just caught this on TV last night and spent over an hour going through it. Excellent B&W photos." One launch attendee unexpectedly found a portrait of her late father in the exhibition and was overjoyed, not least because her children have never seen a photo of their grandfather during that period. Raju's photos and the wonderful stories told in his captions continue to evoke strong memories for people who remember the Spitalfields of the 1980s, as well as fascination in those who weren't there.
